A view from the stands.

W Connections emerged victorious in a keenly contested final by 1 - 0. A first half goal was the decider.

From the outset, W Connections were clearly intent on imposing themselves on their northern guests, while Jabloteh were dogged in the quest to disrupt the fluid W Connection game. On 7 minutes, Toussaint found some space on the left side and cut back onto his right boot to fire overbars from 30 yards out. A few minutes later, Goulart got free on the right side and his cross found Pacheco free on the weak side where he controlled well and finished low into the far corner of the net. 1-0 to W Connections after 10 minutes. The referee was sharing yellow cards in an effort to keep a lid on the proceedings. Goulart, Viveros and Joseph began to controll the rhythm of the game as Jabloteh appeared content to get bodies behind the ball in a defensive posture. Their counter attacks were rendered ineffective by the wily W Connections defence anchored by Joseph. There weren't any further clear cut chances despite Connections having the better of the exchanges. The score at the half remained 1 - 0.

From the start of the second half, Wolfe was deployed further forward to partner Prosper and this gave some thrust to the Jabloteh's attack. Marcano began to use the resulting space in midfield well, and was instrumental in keeping W Connections on the back foot. Connections came close to scoring in the 52nd minute when Gray header from Goulart's free kick forced a diving save from James. The offside flag was up, so it would not have counted. Jabloteh brought Whitley in on 66 minutes for W. Joseph, and took his place in the center of the park. Jabloteh got the best chance of equalizing when Toussaint made an errant back pass that went by Drayton with Prosper beating everyone to the ball in the 18 yard box. With only the keeper to beat, he shot wide. Jabloteh continued to keep the pressure on W Connection with Peltier  and Whitley crossing from the right looking for the big frame of Prosper. They also forced several corners as they sought the elusive equalizer.

Elton John then entered the fray for a tiring Prosper at the 75th minute mark. One minute later, Hector replaced Goulart for Connections. John shortly after his arrival, pick up a ball just inside Connections half and tried a shot which sailed harmlessly wide. The parade of players continued as Cupid replaced Toussaint for Connections in the 82nd minute, then G. Wolfe replaced Daniel at left back for Jabloteh. B. DeLeon replaced Oliviera for Connections on 89 minutes. With 4 minutes added time, Connections were trying to kill the clock and doing so effectively. Hector showed a littly of his footwork when he to the ball into the corner and danced around Wolfe to the delight of the Connections supporters. Jabloteh were finally relieved of their agony as the referee blew his whistle.

This was indeed a game of 2 halves. W Connections firing the opening salvo and controlling the game, probing and looking for the key to unlocking the tight Jabloteh defence. The however, lost their way in the second half as Jabloteh refused to be repressed. They attacked very direct, and by pushing players further upfield, were able to wrest the initiative from W Connections.

W Connections: Williams, N Thomas, D Drayton, E Joseph, W Oliviera (B DeLeon 89'), C Viveros, R Viana, A Pacheco, J Goulart (H Hector 76'), A Toussaint (K Cupid 82'), E Jean (capt.)

Jabloteh: B James, M Francois, I Gray, C Murray, N Daniel (G Wolfe 86'), W Joseph (A Whitley 66'), T Noel, J Marcano, A Wolfe, P Prosper (E John 75').

Peltier has good potential but under Fenwick he is going no where fast. Fenwick have his players just running fast, fast but he eh teaching them the game.
He needs to get out under Fenwick, because Fenwick only cares about Fenwick & Fenwick alone.
I have watched both Peltier & Marcano in plenty games & they have plenty pace but always running with their heads down & I think the coach should have already addressed that, but from what I saw on Friday & yesterday it is still the same.

Fenwick is developing players, sadly it is mainly for a specific market - the UK. We all know UK players tend only to be successful in one place....the UK, is not that UK players can't be successful abroad (though few have) but foreign coaches simply doh like what most bring to the table and the ones they do like are usually excessively overpriced. You are right Fenwick is doing this for his benefit....but he is looking at markets he knows. No point in him developing a player that could do the business in Brazil, Italy, Spain etc....as he would'nt really know how. As far as I know he played his whole career in the UK, was never a flamboyant player himself, was brought up with in English mentality to football were flair is considered a luxury and not a necessity and he has no links in his capacity as an agent (it seems!) in these markets. The only contradiction is the man sounding like ah Geordie....but his teams doh play like Newcastle at all.

Depends on what these players want at the end of the day....it seems fairly easy to move between teams in the PFL, but if they think Fenwick offers them the best chance of getting a contract abroad they may as well follow his bidding.

For the people who were there at the game on Friday and yesterday... What allyuh think of the referee? Javier Juaregui. That man real pelt out yellow cards. Like for instance Goulart when substituted on Friday get a yellow for walking off, wasting time na... but yesterday when substitution time reach, Goulart walk off at same pace and eh get no yellow card. However later on while sitting on the bench ref made up for it by hitting Goulart with the yellow for causing a fracas while sitting on the bench. Other than that the man was just sharing cards like fuss time.

Props to Brian James from Jabloteh, job well done.

Good Morning,

It would be nice if some of these guys would opt for other Euro leagues than England. But like I said before, the UK is the comfort zone. Language and WI culture is more important to most of those guys. But I spoke to some people who moved around Euro and they said Holland, Belgium is ok. Lots of people speak English there. It would be great if some could sign in Spain, Italy and France.

The referee performed poorly. Like he was being graded and was trying too hard and ended up getting in the way of the game. Too many unnecessary whistles and cards. :(

Triniman, I can't comment on that aspect of the man's work. I can only comment on the games i saw and the related performances. Peltier is only one year removed from the College league isn't he?

W Connection are champs

Vibe CT105 W Connection players celebrate their Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championship Final victory over CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium on Sunday.

After a traditional Sunday lunch, one would have thought that the prospect of seeing good football in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championship Final would have drawn a big crowd to the Manny Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella. No such luck.

But, even without the big crowd, conditions for football were absolutely beautiful when Vibe CT105 W Connection edged CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh 1-0 in the final on a single goal from midfielder Andre Pacheco.

The valuable goal ensured W Connection qualified for the CONCACAF Champions Cup quarter-finals, where they will meet CD Guadalajara of Mexico in a two-leg playoff.

W Connection host the first leg in Trinidad on February 13, before the away match on February 28 in Mexico.

On Sunday, W Connection were targetting the Jabloteh goal from long-range early on, with both Brazilian left back William Oliviera and Colombian central defender Christian Viveros taking cracks at goal without troubling Brian James, who has been between the uprights since Daurance Williams was injured in the opening minutes of their semi-final victory over Haiti's Baltimore Sportif at the same venue last Friday.

The left-footed Pacheco eventually got the breakthrough for W Connection in the 11th minute, meeting a cross from Brazilian midfielder Gefferson Goulart and sliding a low shot away from Brian James, to put his team into the lead.

Even before the goal, W Connection were having the better of the game and keeping possession for long periods.

For a second consecutive match, Netherlands Antilles referee Javier Juaregui was doing his best to spoil the game and had already given three yellow cards, including one to W Connection's Andre Toussaint, who was tripped by Anthony Wolfe when driving to goal, but ended up being punished for diving.

At least one fan was puzzled to the point of stating: "That referee mad!"

It took just over half-hour  for Jabloteh to mount their first serious attack, when midfielder Wendell Joseph dumped the ball over W Connection's goal, following a good searching run from their captain Trent Noel down the middle of the field.

W Connection looked set to grab another item in the 37th when a free-kick from Brazilian Ronald Viana sent the ball dangerously close to the top corner of the Jabloteh goal. But keeper James flew like a Boeing 747, soaring across to cleanly pluck the ball out of the air.

Toussaint then ran at Jabloteh in the 48th minute and set up Goulart, when his pass was inadvertently re-directed to the Brazilian by tumbling defender Karlon Murray, and James saved Jabloteh by coming out quickly to smother the shot.

Jabloteh pressed the action  early in the second half, but failed to breach a tight W Connection defence. The San Juan team's biggest problem was young, talented flanker Lester Peltier, who still plays like a schoolboy. He preferred to seek his own glory with senseless dribbling, instead of whipping in a dangerous cross, and allowed the W Connection back line time to re-organise.

And one of the strange occurences on the night was Trinidad and Tobago's World Cup midfielder Aurtis Whitley warming Jabloteh's bench until the 65th minute, when coming on for Joseph.

Jabloteh did have one excellent opportunity to pull level in the 70th when an errant back pass from Devon Drayton played in veteran striker Peter Prosper, who turned his shot wide of keeper Jan Michael Williams and the goal as well.

Coach Terry Fenwick's stress level must have increased as he directed his team from the sideline, shouting at his players the entire match.

"Push them back, push them back," Fenwick desperately instructed his players, but on a tough afternoon, the push the Englishman needed never quite materialised for Jabloteh.
