S. Florida could gain team

The Major Indoor Soccer League is "very likely" to expand into South Florida no later than the 2008-09 season, the owner of the state's franchise rights said Thursday.

Sham Maharaj, who has been awarded an expansion team in Orlando in 2007, also has received first right of refusal for ownership of future MISL teams in Florida.

He said the Miami market is "definitely at the top of that list."

MISL Commissioner Steve Ryan and Maharaj made the joint announcement regarding the Orlando franchise and state ownership rights during the ESPN2 broadcast of the league championship series between St. Louis and Baltimore on April 30.

While working on specifics of the Orlando franchise, Maharaj set up a research team to study the Miami area for another franchise.

"I would say it's going to happen sooner rather than later," Maharaj said. "It might even be our first choice if things don't work out in Orlando as far as finding a venue and other logistics go."

Rich Bradley, vice president of operations for Orlando, and Maharaj were in Fort Lauderdale last month to discuss proposals for a South Florida franchise.

"Things are very preliminary at this point, but absolutely Miami is a market we're looking at very seriously," Bradley said. "I think the 2008-09 season looks like the target [for South Florida] because we want to try to make Orlando work first and foremost."

Maharaj, president and chief executive officer of the Buena Vista Corporation in Orlando, was born in Trinidad and Tobago but now calls Florida home.

"Florida is where I live and work. It's a very exciting state for the Major Indoor Soccer League as it moves forward," Maharaj said.

"If we can find a place to play in Miami, that area will get a franchise. It's a very strong market for us."

south florida is a tough market to crack. probably because it have so many other diversions down there and 365 days of good weather a year.

Orlando Sharks Enter MISL
soccer365.com

The name of the eighth Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) team is the Orlando Sharks, in accordance with an announcement made today by team investor/operator Sham Maharaj, president of Buena Vista Corporation, and MISL Commissioner Steve Ryan.  Community partners and soccer fans alike joined in the celebration, marking the first of many milestones leading up to the Inaugural Season Opening Night Gala, which will kick off the professional club’s 15-game home schedule later this fall.

“I am pleased to introduce the birth of a legacy in Central Florida sports, Orlando’s newest professional sports team, the Orlando Sharks,” said Mr. Maharaj.

The Orlando Sharks will join the Baltimore Blast, California Cougars, Chicago Storm, Detroit Ignition, Milwaukee Wave, Philadelphia Kixx and a yet-to-be-named New Jersey team in the MISL’s 2007-08 season.

“We’ve spent many hours soliciting feedback from the community to ensure we captured Central Florida’s input into the naming process,” explained Rich Bradley, vice president of Buena Vista Sports & Entertainment and team president. “We offered a selection of geographic references, historical nicknames, mythical creatures and native species in the polling; ultimately the most popular name was originally a write-in that was the clear winner in the final round of voting.”

The result of the poll, which attracted over 3,500 responses last August, is the easily recognizable and feared ocean predator, the bull shark. This fierce-looking teal, black and gray shark embraces an aggressive spirit symbolizing the team’s goal of making an immediate impact on the local and national scene as Orlando’s source for action-packed entertainment. The logo plays on the shark’s distinctive features, notably its sleek body and swift attacking movement.

Although most people know that sharks can sometimes be seen off the coastline of Central Florida, these aggressive animals have also ventured on occasion into the Orlando metro area. Bull sharks, in particular, have been spotted swimming up the channels of the St. John’s River and into Lake Monroe in Sanford.

In addition to the name and logo announcement, Bradley outlined upcoming events, including the selection of the team’s head coach, the first-ever draft pick during the MISL Collegiate Amateur Draft on March 8, local team try-outs, dance team auditions and community partnerships, including afternoon training sessions already in progress at local schools.

“After having actively participated in our community for a full year prior to our professional team taking the field for the first time, the Sharks are already demonstrating their commitment to be engaged as true community partners, impacting Central Florida by investing in today’s youth to help create tomorrow’s future leaders, both academically and through athletics,” said Bradley.

Following the completion of the 2006-07 MISL season, a dispersal draft of unprotected current MISL players will be held to help fill the rosters of the Orlando and Newark, N.J. teams, as well as for any other new expansion clubs scheduled to play during the 2007-08 season. Later this spring, the team will announce a series of local try-outs to be held over the summer throughout nine counties in Central Florida, as well as unveil the team’s head coach, uniforms and mascot.

One thing you have to admire is the amount of community interaction this team has. They open up the logo competition to the community. They having open trials. They getting them selves in the media and emphasizing community relations.

The PFL need to take a look at this. Maybe Connection, Jabloteh etc should have a well publicised open tryouts for the youth teams. They should even consider giving free tickets to schools at the beginning of the season. In true trini form at the end of the season win or lose they should have a fete.

When men here read these developments that the US has in place to promote and develop the sport , Why is it that we have so much ill feelings towards the US and their dominance in Concacaf ?

They have committed tons of resources, has one of the best leagues in Concacaf, the most successful Womens team in the world and youth teams that do well in most competitions.

Are we to zealous of them to admit and learn from their growth/dominance ?
