Clayton Morris: Futsal is a critical foundation to football
By Jonathan Ramnanansingh (T&T Newsday)

FORMER Strike Squad player Clayton Morris spearheaded a nine-member Trinidad and Tobago contingent which completed a Futsal High Performance course courtesy of the Confederation of Brazil Football (CBF) on Sunday.

The course comprised 20 hours of online classes. Its objective, as stated by the CBF, was to contribute to the qualification and education of professionals who work in the futsal arena.

Brazilian futsal coaches, including national team coach Marquinos Xavier and other special international guests, administered content that was translated to English. Upon conclusion, participants received CBF Academy International certification.

National futsal captain Jerwyn Balthazar and T&T’s lone female participant N’Neeka Harewood were also among those gaining certification.

Morris hailed the importance of such a course and the many benefits that would be derived from educating T&T’s futsal enthusiasts.

“It was a pleasure to be chosen to be part of that course. What really touched me was that they want to see the rest of the world develop as much as they have.

“Spain and Brazil have been the top teams in futsal and they saw it fit to collaborate to teach the rest of the world what they are doing in order to have their futsal national team competing at the highest level,” said Morris.

Some of the topics covered were defending, attacking, attacking with a fifth player (goalkeeper), high pressure, man to man and zone marking, dead balls and the future of futsal.

The 59-year-old, who also served as national futsal coach, said the indoor sport is now being used as a platform to help build technique and sharpen the skills of players to allow a smoother transition into football.

He was actually impressed that futsal is being used in top countries such as Brazil, Argentina and Spain as a foundation for football.

“Given the exposure from being the national futsal coach from since 2004 and going on to those Concacaf tournaments, it helped me to have a better insight about football and how you can bring the dynamics of futsal into football,” he added.

Morris affirmed that futsal is not “small goal” since the sport continues to evolve. He believes T&T needs to realign its developmental strategy and introduce potential footballers to futsal at a very young age.

The ex-T&T defender said Brazil is now taking their players from age five to 15, to develop the fundamentals of futsal. From there, they are placed into a mini Under-17 league. This league is viewed by top international scouts who select the best players and place them into football teams. The remaining players go on to compete in futsal only.

“You could take a futsal player and put him onto the football field and observe his rotation. We have to target the younger ages and get futsal in their system.

“Futsal has a critical part to play to getting our football and players to go out there and give us that entertainment.

“If the South American teams are defeating nations like the USA by a considerable margin, then we can do it also,” he added.

Previously, Morris started several football-related programmes within the prison system to help prisoners channel their energies towards sport. He even introduced futsal and said the initiative reaped great benefit.

“I put an acronym to it Friends United To Save Another Life (FUTSAL). This is what I was able to take into the prison and they gravitated to it because they realise it’s a sport that encourages them to challenges themselves to rotate their positions. The sport also helps with the grassroots. It’s a testimony that it works at that level,” he closed.

Today Portugal won the Futsal EURO championship for the second time in a row. Defeated Russia 4-2. They were down 0-2. Don't know what they did to right the sinking ship because up to then the Russians were imposing. Went back to focusing on Atletico Madrid playing Barcelona.

Portugal also walked away with the Player of the Tournament title (Zicky Té).

Spain finished 3rd having defeated Ukraine 4-1.

Records

Portugal became only the third multiple winner after Spain (7) and Italy (2). Russia remain on one, the only other past champions having now lost six finals.

Portugal became only the second reigning FIFA Futsal World Cup holders to win the Futsal EURO title after Spain (2001, 2005 and 2007). Portugal's run of winning three major tournaments in a row (EURO 2018, 2021 World Cup and EURO 2022) also equals Spain's feat (2004 World Cup, EURO 2005 and EURO 2007).

Portugal completed their second straight 'perfect' finals campaign, with five wins in 2018 and six in 2022 (this time not requiring extra time in any game).

Spain kept up their record of finishing in the top three in all 12 editions.

Russia kept up their record of reaching at least the last eight in all 12 editions.

Italy have also played in all 12 final tournaments.

Spain captain Ortiz retired from international futsal with new records for finals appearances (35) and overall tournament appearances including qualifying (55). He also equalled the record of taking part in seven final tournaments.

This was the first final tournament with 16 teams (up from 12), while qualifying also included a group stage with home and away fixtures for the first time.

A record four debutants took part: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Finland, Georgia and Slovakia, taking the all-time number of qualifiers to 23. Those last three all got past the group stage: since the second edition in 1999, only Azerbaijan (2010) and Kazakhstan (2016) had previously managed that feat on debut.

Spain's 8-0 win against Georgia equalled their own finals record winning margin (9-1 vs Belarus in 2010).

Georgia's campaign, from qualifying round to the quarter-finals, consisted of a record 13 matches. Zviad Kupatadze, Roninho and Shota Tophuria took part in every game.

Russia's 11 wins in their campaign, including qualifying, is a new record.

Spain's 72 goals in their campaign, including qualifying, beat the record of 69 set by Russia in the inaugural 1996 edition.

This was the first final tournament since 2005 (before the introduction of the quarter-final round) with no game going to extra time.

There must be a spectacularly compelling reason why the TTFA released a media promotion of a March 26 event on March 24. An open screening event at that ...

 :bs:

Perhaps it has something to do with the notorious secrecy of the fiefdom that is the Futsal Association of Trinidad and Tobago (FATT), "a FULL BODY member of the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association", whose Twitter account mysteriously has NO mention of the open screening.

FAT'T's most recent tweet was presented on March 10. Mind boggling stuff. Also mind boggling is that an entity vested with growing the game in T&T would have a mere 130 odd followers.

 :bs:

Maybe they were rocking Instagram? Or jointly asleep at the wheel?

Carry on!

Futsal Youth Camp for Tobago
T&T Express

After two years of on-field inactivity, the Futsal Association of Trinidad and Tobago (FATT) and the Tobago Youth Football League will host a Futsal Youth Camp this month.

The Camp–operating as a “safe zone”—will be held from the Monday 11 to Thursday 14 at the Montgomery Hard Court in Tobago.

The Futsal Youth Camp will comprise boys and girls in four age groups: 7-9, 10-12, 13-15 and 16-17 years. They will play under the scrutiny of international UEFA B Futsal coach educator, Ben Tadmor. Tadmor’s accolades include being a former England assistant coach, former England Futsal talent ID Lead, and former FA Futsal Regional Talent Centre lead.

Both co-hosts of the Youth Camp are proud of the partnership acceptance by regional financial institution, Republic Bank Limited through their Power to Make A Difference programme.

“The Futsal Youth Camp will be one of FATT’s signature events held during the school breaks. This venture is part of the intersect between Grassroots and Player development—two of the five pillars of FATT’s 2024 Strategic Plan.” said Geoffrey Edwards, FATT’s president. He continued: “Starting in Tobago was the brainchild of our zonal representative, Mr. Richard Goddard and his continued impressive dedication to building the sport on the island.

“This is bolstered by the forged partnerships with corporate Trinbago such as Republic Bank and our growing international Futsal network of esteemed professionals such as Ben Tadmor who have pledged continued support for the development of local coaches and players.”

Auriol Small, Republic Bank Area Manager, Tobago said: “We are excited to support and partner with the FATT and the Tobago Youth Football League as they launch the first Futsal Youth Camp. The Bank remains committed to its agenda, through the Power to Make a Difference programme, to develop and generate greater participation among young boys and girls in sport. We believe that through this partnership, we can empower youth to develop their true potential and help shape society for a brighter and more sustainable future. Additionally, I love that young girls can participate in this camp as we help make the beautiful game of football more inclusive for all.”

President of the Tobago Youth Football League, Shaquille Mcletchie, said the Tobago-based sport management organisation welcomes the collaborative project with the FATT.

“We are honoured to partner with FATT to host this amazing camp in Tobago. Youth development through sports remains a top priority for us.”

Benny in T&T U-23 Futsal team for Caribbean Games.
TTFA Media.

Trinidad and Tobago’s Under 23 Men’s Futsal squad for the Caribbean Games in Guadeloupe has been finalized by head coach Paul Decle. The tournament which is being hosted by the Caribbean Association of National Olympic Committees will see T&T come up against the hosts on July 1st and Suriname on July 2nd in Group A matches. The other participating nations in Group B include Cuba, Martinique and Curacao.

Included in the T&T side is midfielder Che Benny who recently made an appearance for the T&T Senior team in a closed-door practice match against St Lucia at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium.

“The preparation has been challenging as we expected with us having to take footballers and teach them to play Futsal which is a different game the way it’s played and the rules,” said Decle.

“But it’s been a productive process. The players have been eager to learn and have given their best efforts all along the way. Their attitude has been positive.

“This team is a U23 team due to the fact that it is an Olympic sanctioned event. It’s a small squad of 10 to fall within the rules of the games for the futsal component. It’s allowed us to bond as a team a bit quicker. We have a good mix of experience from last year with Che Benny in the team and players like Omri Baird who was part of the men’s training pool last year and Darnell Hospedales who has experience playing at these events.

Decle added that the tournament would provide a valuable opportunity for players to get Futsal experience on a regional level.

“The opportunity is a great one to be able to represent at these games in a relatively new sport. We are keeping a positive outlook going in and will execute to the best of our ability.

“It’s always a privilege to be able to play for the people of our country which is who we represent and we have remained conscious of that all the way through. It’s great that the sport of Futsal is being played at these events and seems to be heading towards becoming an Olympic sport. We look forward to a successful tournament,” Decle concluded.

Trinidad and Tobago U-23 Futsal Men take home Bronze at Caribbean Games
TTFA Media

Trinidad and Tobago’s U-23 Men’s Futsal Team took home the Bronze medal in the Caribbean Games with an 8-2 victory over Martinique in the third place playoff at the Palais Des Sports Du Gosier on Sunday.

Che Benny, led the way with five goals and was later named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

Match report

Location: Palais des Sport du Gosier; Date: July 3
Trinidad & Tobago 8-2 Martinique
Goal Scorers: Che Benny 5, Josiah Joseph 2, Omri Baird 1

Head Coach Paul Decle summarized proceedings.

“It was a difficult first half for us. Our boys were a bit fatigued after last night’s game against Suriname. Martinique were disciplined and well organised defensively. They made it difficult for us the way we planned to start the game, limiting our chances on goal. After going down 1-0 we equalised later down in the half with a Che Benny free kick.

We ran into foul trouble late in the half and gave up 2 penalties, the first they missed and the second Isiah Willaims made a great save low to the left. This was massive in keeping the scores level at half time. In Second half we conceded early on, going down again 2-1. It was the first time in the 3 games we were behind.

“We made some adjustments and at that moment we were able to take back control of the game and equalised again 2-2. I think with the tactical change we were able to keep possession better which suits our players and control the tempo of the game. We settled and moved the ball better with a greater intention and went up 4-2 This took the wind out of them a little more and from there the guys really dug deep to stay ahead and were able to extend our lead to a point where we dominated in the finaleight minutes sealing a good win for Trinidad & Tobago.

“Coming from behind twice tonight really shows the character of this team. I’m really pleased for the guys tonight. All along we spoke about wanting to do this for the people of Trinidad & Tobago and to be able to make it happen is a great feeling.

“Tonight we created history by winning the bronze at the Inaugural Caribbean Games. It shows really well for the future of futsal in the CaribbeanPlaying in front of crowds was really an amazing atmosphere. To top off a great evening we had our Captain Che Benny unanimously named tournament MVP.”

Futsal Association, Raw Fitness gym to stage futsal youth camp
By Johnathan Ramnanansingh (T&T Newsday)

THE FUTSAL Association of Trinidad and Tobago (FATT) has partnered with local gym Raw Fitness Health Club to host the second edition of its Futsal Youth Camp.

The camp will be held from next Monday to Friday at the gym’s Brentwood Mall, Chaguanas location. It caters for boys and girls in three age groups – seven to nine, ten to 12 and 13-15 years old.

A statement by FATT on Wednesday said participants will “learn, train and play the fastest growing indoor sport in the world under the watchful eyes of former assistant coach and futsal goalkeeping coach Dunstan Williams”.

Williams has his own football academy, serves as reigning Intercol champions Presentation College assistant coach and is a certified participant at the only local FIFA futsal coach course.

“The Futsal Youth Camp will be one of FATT’s signature events held during the school breaks. This venture is part of the inter-sect between grassroots and player development - two of FATT’s five pillars of its 2024 strategic plan,” said association president Geoffrey Edwards.

He continued, “After a successful execution of the pilot project in Tobago (Easter camp in April) where we had over 120 children guided by UEFA B futsal coach educator Ben Tadmor; our next strategic move was to replicate said in Trinidad. A suitable partner and proper location were paramount.”

FATT approached Raw Fitness with their new facility which includes an astro-turf indoor pitch in a centralised location at the mall.

Through Futsal868’s “Sponsor a Child” programme, 25 children from the Dass Trace Youth Empowerment Committee and Ryu Dan Dojo Youth Empowerment Center were provided free access to the camp.

The camp is financially supported by National Lotteries Control Board (NLCB), LINX and Royal Bank.

Interested participants can register by contacting the FATT’s camp WhatsApp hotline at 787-7678, messaging their social media Facebook and Instagram accounts (search @Futsal868) or sending an email to futsaltt@gmail.com.

Futsal Fiesta kicks off January 28.
By Jonathan Ramnanansingh (T&T Newsday).

The Futsal Association of Trinidad and Tobago (FATT) will host a two-day Futsal Fiesta event at the Southern Regional Indoor Sports Arena in Pleasantville on January 28 and 29.

The Girl's U15 Futsal Developmental Tournament will be held on day one and will be followed by the Men’s Open Community Cup (south edition) on day two.

A statement issued by the local association said the tourney is the first of its kind in T&T.

This event is intended to attract eight teams and over 100 girls with a focus on youth development through community engagement and national outreach.

Registration is $400 per girls team of 15 players maximum, with trophies and medals up for grabs. Action kicks off daily from 9am to 6pm.

For the men, registration is $1,500 per team of 15 players maximum, with a winner-takes-all cash prize of $8,000.

FATT’s president Geoffrey Edwards said the Weekend Futsal Fiesta was conceptualised to encourage participation from different demographics.

“After successfully hosting the Male U14 Futsal Development Tournament in November last year, many of our stakeholders were eager to have different age groups playing.

“Initiatives like these are succinctly aligned to our strategic plan, and thus, we are committed to answering the call and facilitating similar activities to these as we commit to increasing awareness of the sport of futsal.”

Interested teams can contact the association via WhatsApp hotline at 787-7678, direct message to their official Facebook and Instagram social media accounts, (@Futsal868) or e-mail futsaltt@gmail.com.
