I'll answer the question. No referees from the non-Spanish speaking Caribbean. Not a single Canadian referee.  There's Chris Grabas. So it's official. We stand alone.

Very insightful into the geographical disparity in capacitation and emphasis. Apparently we occupy a different world and a distinct head space.

T&T men's futsal team off to Costa Rica
T&T Guardian Reports.

The country’s men’s national Futsal team left on Monday for San Jose, Costa Rica for a training camp ahead of the Concacaf Futsal Championship in Guatemala City, next month.

Coach Constantine Konstin finalised a 14-man squad following weeks of preparations at the indoor gymnasium of the International School Port-of-Spain.

The players first had to undergo medical screening, according to Concacaf specifications, last week at Healthnet Caribbean Limited, from which they were all declared medically fit for the competition.

The full contingent also received COVID-19 PCR Tests and was cleared to travel.

Konstin said: “This all started Feb 2020 when we had our first tryouts, then in the middle of March of 2020 we got the selection down to 35 players. And in March of 2021, we got the team down to 25.

“Today I am proud to say that we selected our 14-man team squad that will be travelling to Costa Rica and then to Guatemala to contest the qualification for the FIFA Futsal World Cup in Lithuania. We’ll have a few days in Costa Rica with two matches which we will maximise in terms of using both exercises to our advantage ahead of the competition.

“It’s been an incredible journey to get to this point but I am very proud of the final squad, all the participants, staff and teams. We had practice games with especially the Venezuelan Futsal community in T&T, as well as FFTT, 361, Captain Basil from Defence force, the Defence Force club, Club Sando and of course our TTFA Normalisation Committee and staff which have offered their support throughout,” Konstin said.

On his selection which includes a combination of some T&T senior men’s team players as well as past futsal team members, Konstin added: “The 14 players that we have selected come with an international pedigree with players like Cummings, Plaza, George, and Sean De Silva. Then we have players who are young but full of spirit and fire like Che Benny and Mark Ramdeen.

“We’ve also got some tough players like Defence Force’s Aaron Lester, King, Ollivierra and the big man Quintero and goalkeepers Kern and Andre. These players are ready to give their all for their country and families."

T&T will contest Group A of the qualifiers, alongside host Guatemala and the Dominican Republic (DR). They face DR on May 4 and Guatemala on May 5.

The tournament was originally slated for 16 teams split into four groups of four teams, but after the withdrawals of French Guiana, Martinique and Guadeloupe, the competition will now feature 13 teams.

Additionally, all matches will now be played at the Domo Polideportivo, a venue that has a long history of hosting international futsal competitions, including the 2000 FIFA Futsal World Cup.

Group A: Guatemala, T&T and the Dominican Republic

Group B: Panama, Mexico and Suriname

Group C: Costa Rica, Canada and Haiti

The team suffered a 7-1 defeat in its opening friendly vs Costa Rica. 5-0 at HT.

Costa Rica, three-time CONCACAF champions with multiple WC appearances, are significantly more accomplished and experienced in this format.

T&T Futsal men hammered 7-1 by Costa Rica
By Walter Alibey (T&T Guardian)

T&T's futsal team got the worst possible start to their campaign ahead of the 2021 CONCACAF Futsal Championship in Guatemala City, next month.

The local unit went down to a heavy 7-1 defeat to the Costa Rican national team in the first of two friendly matches on Tuesday night. And on Wednesday, the T&T team was hoping to redeem itself in a second match against the Costa Ricans at the same venue.

After the warmup match, national coach Constantine Konstin said his team struggled to find their rhythm in the first half but did much better in the second half.

"It was the first opportunity to play in a real futsal game with referees, a clock stopper, it was really an eye-opener. They are really excited and happy that they participated in this first game. They were fired up but they were a little bit nervous at the beginning of the game. They were kind of overwhelmed and they struggled to find a rhythm.

"But in the second half, they really came back really strong. I feel really positive about how the game ended after the second half."

Konstin's men will contest Group A of the qualifiers alongside hosts Guatemala and the Dominican Republic (DR). They face DR on May 4 and Guatemala on May 5.

All matches will be played at the Domo Polideportivo, a venue that has a long history of hosting international futsal competitions, including the 2000 FIFA Futsal World Cup.

Konstin said in the game, his team intended to work on defending man-to-man, applying high pressure, pressing and moving when in possession of the ball, and basically find a rhythm of play, but it all fell flat in the opening half, as the Costa Ricans were superior to them.

In an interview with TTFA Media on Wednesday, Konstin noted that his team had the opportunity to discuss the game at length Wednesday morning and was hoping to redeem themselves in a second game scheduled to play, on Wednesday night.

Futsal men demolished 8-2
By Walter Alibey (T&T Guardian)

T&T Futsal men found themselves at the end of another beating 8-2 by Costa Rica on Wednesday night, as they continued preparation ahead of the CONCACAF Futsal Championship in Guatemala City next month, which will be qualifiers for the FIFA Futsal World Cup in Lithuania, September 12 – October 6, 2021.

The team, coached by American-born Constantine Konstin was hoping to overturn an embarrassing opening-game 7-1 defeat by the Costa Ricans in the first of two warm-up matches.

After that match, Konstin said his team failed to find its rhythm in the first half and could do nothing although they pulled it back in the second half of play.

The Trinibagonians were expecting to redeem themselves in Wednesday's match, but could not stop a superior Costa Rican attack firing eight goals past them. T&T got goals on each side of the halves, with the ever-dangerous Mark Ramdeen scoring in the first half to send the teams to the interval 4-1 in Costa Rica's favour.

And in the second half, Keston George again found the nets, but the damage had already been done.

Konstin's 14-man team comprises a combination of former T&T Senior Men’s Team players as well as past Futsal team members, including Keron Cummings, Willis Plaza, George, and Sean De Silva, as well as Che Benny, a former national youth midfielder and Ramdeen.

T&T will contest Group A of the qualifiers along with hosts Guatemala and the Dominican Republic. They will face the Dominican Republic on May 4 and Guatemala a day later on May 5.

All matches will be played at the Domo Polideportivo, a venue that has a long history of hosting international futsal competitions, including the 2000 FIFA Futsal World Cup.

The groups are now as follows:

Group A: Guatemala, Trinidad and Tobago and Dominican Republic

Group B: Panama, Mexico and Suriname

Group C: Costa Rica, Canada and Haiti

Group D: Cuba, United States, El Salvador and Nicaragua

Link for viewing the match versus Dominican Republic. Hopefully it works. 10pm TT time.
:beermug: worked great, good quality. Unfortunately we lost 6-2. I tuned in 2nd half when we were down 3-0 and chasing the game to get some goals, in doing so it left us exposed in the back. Looks like we have something to build on with this team despite the results.

Not a fan of how we approached aspects of the match, particularly being on the back foot - especially given the level of investment that went into the all-important opener. A tad more risk and enterprise would have been appreciated. A view somewhat influenced by the renditions of Suriname and Haiti but also independent of that.

We need technical players.

However, going into the tournament we knew that we would concede goals. A commitment to outscoring the opponent should have balanced that recognition. Can't achieve that without some element of interior play closer to the opponent's goal.

Player for player I think our players are BETTER than the Surinamese. The Haitians made a costly late decision. Unfortunate: They showed better as a collective than we did.

Concentration lapses were evident (Marchan definitely excluded).

Broader comment: We have NO functioning leagues in ANY format of the game and we are a nation of footballing ambitions? Nah, we are posers (not pertinent to the futsal!).

NC/TTFA: Keep it up and we might be impostors on this stage. Our competitors are in growth mode and we are not. Your mandate is to remedy that. No passing grade yet! Right now the only thing that is moving forward is the clock.

Tough position these players were put in to learn and execute in a short time, but they gave their best given the circumstances.

This is not a critique but an honest question,
Is it that the previous members of the Futsal team were barred from the training pool because of the court case they won recently?

I heard only Jameel Neptune would have had experience in this format previously.

I think I now know the problem with TT sports and specifically football. After watching the first 10 minutes of the Futsal, I had an epiphany.
Firstly, and again the wrong ppl are selected. We require small goal champions, men who could make a ball dance, play dead, fly and disappear. They are guys in every park and court in TT. They have flair, creativity, beats and zest. Imagination and determination, like an old stick fighter, not the teachings and demonstrations of today. Playing to win for real, not just partaking.

We have come to guided by coaches and coaching, doing things a certain way and in a certain order, rigid, disciplined and dead. This was not our style, our style like our carnival was flair, determination, imagination, freedom, taking guidance from a band leader, whether innovator or traditionalist, but not orders. He doesn’t dance your mass, we dance our own mass. From a theme , we dance, our section dances our band portrays and dances. ‘Bassman in our head’ we dance.

This rigid. Tap, pass , run, tackle, was not our game. We were and could still be more imaginative than what is on display. Select our best performers or best dancers of the game. We once were carnival Carnival ppl, prepare all year for competition, jab jab to sailors, From the Caribbean to Europe and Africa, we imagined we researched, we played to win.

Today we bring a bunch of coaches to show us how to play their game , their way. When we should be playing their game our way. It’s what Gally and SH tried to do, but total and instant gratification has now also be become our other latest anchors. So we buck and we lose faith and we call for a new leader and discard the actual ppl who know our historical culture, regardless of the mass we play.

We have to get those ppl back in charge, ppl who will free our minds, so our bodies and asses will eventually ( not instantly) follow.

Trinidad and Tobago lose 6-2 to Dominican Republic in Concacaf Futsal
By Jonathan Ramnanansingh (T&T Newsday)

Trinidad and Tobago's men’s futsal team had a rough start to their Concacaf Futsal Championship campaign as they went down 6-2 against Dominican Republic in their opening Group A fixture on Tuesday.

At the Domon Polideportivo de la CDAG in Guatemala, Dominican Republic went ahead after just five minutes of play.

Marco Gomez made the most of a solo run from half-court and fired through the legs of T&T custodian Andre Marchan. This was the lone goal of the 20-minute half.

Early in the second period, Ricardo Alvarez doubled Dominican Republic's lead with a right-footed shot past Marchan – again through his legs.

TT’s Dwight Quintero then received his second yellow of the match after committing a rash foul. This meant that T&T would play the next two minutes of the game with one man short.

Dominican Republic capitalised on their player advantage and, with just 25 seconds to go before the two-minute penalty concluded, Guillermo Lopez blasted one past Marchan to send them 3-0 ahead.

Three minutes later, Keston George pulled one back for T&T as he headed home past goalie Jose Perez.

However, Gomez bagged his second of the night as he and Hector Perez teamed up to send Dominican Republic 4-1 up. One minute later, Gomez secured his first-ever Concacaf hat-trick as T&T sank further.

With just three before the final whistle, T&T’s Jameel Neptune executed some nifty footwork to score past Perez and send the score to 5-2.

Marcelle Sistero guaranteed victory for Dominican Republic in the dying moments as he scored with a neat assist from Gomez.

T&T return to the court on Wednesday to play their final group game against Guatemala.

The group stage began on Monday with Guatemala beating Dominican Republic 4-2. T&T and Guatemala will square off in the final Group A match on Wednesday.

Tough one, those guys really gave their all. I haven't been following the futsal developments but from the looks of things we just have to get use to it and find the right set of players for this style of game. Also we have to bring a certain "nasty" to our game. In both games against DR and Gua those guys grabbed, pulled, dived, scraped, took cheap shots, pretty much did anything to give them an edge. From my experience that's how most Latin teams play and we need to add that element to our game since most teams get away with it.

I get where you're coming from but we don't need to do that to be successful mate. i have said it all the time on other forums that the latin game is one of the dirtiest games in football with the exception of brazil and italy. back in england we used to laugh at players like torres and cristiano just because they struggled tremendously in their early years in english football where referees would give them no breaks with their dirty cheating antics.

what TT needs to do is develop their game into a euro style instead of playing this soft out dated brazilian type of football, that's why latin teams struggle against jamaica because jamaica plays more of an english brand, a rough strong running passing game.

IMO the germans have the best brand of football to emulate because it's technical on all levels. there's the running game, the possession game, the geometric game the pressing game and the iron man game where they perfect the art of taking and giving hard tackles without being whistled for a foul.

they just like the english frown on that sissy latin game where players roll around trying to force fouls in order to slow up the game by running down the clock, or try to persuade officials to give calls in their favor. we really need to study these assholes in order to be successful in the 11 on 11 football. don't know about this small goal game though, i never liked it but to each his own.

I thought trinidad was the home of small goal, how it is that we have a baseball nation beating us in small goal? i've said it and i'll say it again, these little boys in TT don't like sports at all. i was in trinidad a year before covid and i passed by the savanah in football season only to see the savannah empty, no football no cricket just people doing laps around the savannah and it made me so angry.

as a kid that place was like paradise to me. i'm from both st anns/cascade and maraval and i practically lived in the savannah on evenings and weekends playing either football, cricket or flying kites. our grandfather never allowed us to play in the streets so QPS became our play ground. now today it seem like there's no love for sports in that country.

on saturday mornings there were the league games which littered the park with an array of colors from all the different teams, and every pitch was occupied from top to bottom, now today the place empty and barren, and we wonder why we have no players in the big leagues around the world, it's because we have become a nation of sissies and loafers looking for handouts instead of putting our talents to use. and we wonder why we're losing games we aught to win.

Morris: Futsal men inexperienced
By Walter Alibey (T&T Guardian)

Lack of experience and an unclear system of attack and defence are the reasons for not only a poor showing by the country's futsal footballers against the Dominican Republic in the opening match of the Futsal CONCACAF World cup Qualifiers in Guatemala on Tuesday night but also for the embarrassing 6-2 result.

Clayton Morris, the former national coach said the inexperienced showed in the game as players struggled to play to the rules, but he was also trying to determine what approach to attack and defence was taken by coach Constantine Konstin, that may have been the team's biggest downfall.

"The reason for the poor showing of our futsal national team at Tuesday's CONCACAF Championship game against the Dominican Republic was basically as I mentioned before, the inexperience of our players. It's very difficult as I said before, very challenging to learn futsal in three months because one of the main challenges is adapting to the rules, and looking at the game last night, the basic kicking, on about five or six occasions, we had to turn over the ball to the Dominica Republic because of not having the ball stopped before it was played," Morris, a former national defender with the T&T Strike Squad football team said on Wednesday.

He added: "According to the technical and the tactical aspects of the game, you saw where one team was playing the square passes, about three or four passes square and then the third or the fourth going forward, and then the rest of the guys join the post-up player, which is what happened in the Dominica Republic team. As in the T&T team, we were playing the ball direct, in other words, we were playing the ball going forward too early. So we weren't getting enough time to rotate.

"I don't want to be critical of the coach's approach, but I am not sure what approach he had. I was trying to assess to see what plan we had to counteract what Dominica was doing, and at no time I saw that, more so on the defence.

"Futsal is a game that is about attack and defence, you must be able to defend and you must be able to attack. When you attack, everybody must attack. In futsal when you're in attack, all the players are attackers and in defence, all the players are defenders," Morris explained.

Concerning the country's chances against Guatemala, the former national defender turn coach, said we do not have a chance against the Central Americans, saying "As coach of the T&T team, we played against the Guatemalans and they play quick passing, non-stop football. You will see for yourself," Morris explained.

Guatemala defeat TT 4-3 in Concacaf Futsal
By Joel Bailey (T&T Newsday)

HOSTS GUATEMALA ended T&T's slim hopes of progression in the 2021 Concacaf Futsal Championships with a 4-3 victory in their Group A fixture on Wednesday night at the Domon Polideportivo de la CDAG, Guatemala City.

T&T finished the group with two defeats from as many matches; they were spanked 6-2 by Dominican Republic on Tuesday.

Guatemala topped the three-team group with a 100 per cent record. They took care of Dominican Republic 4-2 on Monday.

Che Benny scored a sensational goal from deep, in the ninth minute, an audacious left-footed lob which flew over the reach of goalkeeper Lester Arevalo.

The hosts equalised two minutes later from a right-footed strike from Alan Aguilar, and followed up with a close range shot from Jose Ramos in the 12th minute.

T&T levelled the scores at 2-2 through Jameel Neptune, in the 16th minute, capitalising on a pass from Darius Ollivierra to slot a left-footer into the open net.

Guatemala notched their third goal when Wanderley Ruiz scored on his second attempt, after his first shot was saved by T&T goalie Andre Marchan.

Benny got his second goal in the 33rd, slamming home a loose ball past Arevalo, but Aguilar had the final say, in the penultimate minute (39th), courtesy of a right-footed shot, on the run, beyond Marchan's reach.

The quarter-finals will be contested on Friday, with Dominican Republic meeting the United States, Guatemala opposing El Salvador, Panama facing Canada and Costa Rica battling Suriname.

The semi-finalists will all be assured spots in the 2021 FIFA Futsal World Cup in Lithuania.

T&T coach Constantine Konstin sees ‘big-time future’ with local Futsal.
By Joel Bailey (T&T Newsday).

T&T Futsal team coach, Constantine Konstin, sees a bright future of the sport locally, after the national team’s display at the last week’s Concacaf Futsal Championships in Guatemala.

T&T, competing in Group A, were beaten 6-2 by the Dominican Republic last Tuesday. They produced a valiant effort against the hosts on Wednesday, before falling to a 4-3 loss.

Costa Rica won their third straight Concacaf Futsal crown, and fourth overall, on Sunday, with a 3-2 victory over the United States. Guatemala needed extra time to defeat Panama 3-2 in the third-place playoff. Costa Rica, United States, Guatemala and Panama all secured berths to the 2021 FIFA Futsal World Cup in Lithuania.

After Wednesday’s game, Konstin said, “I haven’t seen a game like that in CONCACAF in years. It just shows you what the potential that Trinidad and Tobago has. We finalised this team together two weeks ago. What these guys have accomplished in two weeks is amazing.”

He called on the TT Football Association (TTFA) to help enhance the growth of the sport locally.

“(The) TTFA has to keep building upon this,” said the American-born coach. “Futsal can be a big-time future for the country, for the communities, especially in the schools, getting the kids playing futsal.

“It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to put this on. I highly recommend that (the) TTFA start building futsal courts (and) leagues so that, one day, T&T can win a World Cup in futsal.”

How will he describe the general arrangements at the Concacaf Championships?

“Fantastic,” Konstin replied. “Everyone took good care of us like we were special, and we are special. They never let us down. Every time we had issues, the people were always there to help us and to take care of it. I want to thank the people of Costa Rica (and) the Costa Rica Soccer Federation.”

Dear Editor: For the players’ sake, TTFA must save futsal from self-appointed president Geoffrey Edwards.
Wired868.com.

“[…] Educators refer to ‘recency and frequency’ as part of the learning process, and when you look at our players, they all possess tremendous individual skill. It follows therefore that the more they play futsal, the more adept at it they will become.

“A national futsal league, not necessarily a professional one, can only redound to the benefit and enhance personal development of the individual players.

“This reality has bypassed [Futsal Association of Trinidad and Tobago president Geoffrey] Edwards…”

The following letter to the editor on the supposed underdevelopment of futsal in Trinidad and Tobago by president Geoffrey Edwards was submitted to Wired868 by former National Futsal Team manager Ronald Brereton:

Last night at the Domo Polideportivo in Guatemala City, Guatemala, another attempt at Futsal World Cup qualifying by the Trinidad and Tobago Men’s National Futsal Team came to a predictable and painful end.

For the record the touring party played four matches and lost all four, 7-1 and 8-2 versus Costa Rica, 6-2 versus the Dominican Republic and 4-3 against hosts Guatemala.

There is a claim made about people who do the same thing over and over and expect different results, I make no such claim. However, Futsal Association of T&T president Geoffrey Edwards must accept full responsibility for this clearly unacceptable debacle.

Since the end of the failed attempt at qualifying in 2004, there has been talk about forming a futsal league in Trinidad and Tobago. To date, we are no closer to this; all because one man has no interest in such a venture.

Educators refer to ‘recency and frequency’ as part of the learning process, and when you look at our players, they all possess tremendous individual skill. It follows therefore that the more they play futsal, the more adept at it they will become.

A national futsal league, not necessarily a professional one, can only redound to the benefit and enhance personal development of the individual players. This reality has bypassed Mr Edwards since 2016 when the then TTFA president David John-Williams asked him to organise a futsal league that the TTFA would assume full responsibility for.

Since then, we play futsal only on Instagram, YouTube and Facebook to satisfy the inflated ego of the self appointed president of FATT.

It was in this very forum that Keith Look Loy indicated there was no membership of FATT that the TTFA knew of; further they were non-compliant, since they had no registered constitution and never held elections. This must not continue.

Today, I call on the TTFA, through the normalisation committee, to intervene and bring some order to futsal in Trinidad and Tobago. As it stands, Mr Edwards—and by extension FATT—is accountable to no one. He is free to do what ever he wants with this grassroots sport.

He keeps talking about five pillars of something, the last of which is a futsal league. In my mind, that and a pink donkey we will never see.

You see, a league would mean facing the owners of futsal in Trinidad and Tobago, which is the players and the teams. It would require transparency and accountability and, of course, elections—all of which, it seems, he is mortally afraid of.

In closing, I congratulate the players for a sterling effort, especially in the match against Guatemala, and for having the courage to travel abroad in these troubled times. That is a true demonstration of patriotism and must be applauded.

You carried yourselves well as model citizens of Trinidad and Tobago. The same cannot be said of Mr Geoffrey Edwards.

He claims that his target for qualification is 2024. Who decided that? Then, in the absence of an organised futsal league and any structure for futsal development in Trinidad and Tobago, why did we enter a team?

Mr Robert Hadad, you and your normalisation committee must rescue futsal from FATT.

Konstin hails ‘amazing’ accomplishment of T&T Futsal Team, despite four defeats in as many games.
By Lasana Liburd (Wired868).

Trinidad and Tobago Men’s National Futsal Team head coach Constantine Konstin credited his outfit for an ‘amazing’ showing after their feisty clash with hosts Guatemala last night, which the twin island republic lost 4-3.

The defeat meant the Soca Warriors were eliminated after just two matches, as they lost their opener to the Dominican Republic 6-2.

“Last night’s game was a spectacular game,” Konstin told the TTFA Media. “I haven’t seen a game like that in Concacaf in years. And it just shows you what potential Trinidad and Tobago has. We put this team together two weeks ago and what these guys have accomplished in two weeks is amazing.”

Konstin’s view on his own work is unlikely to be unanimous. Trinidad and Tobago’s preparations for the 2021 Concacaf Futsal Championship started on 2 February 2021—not quite two weeks ago.

Dominican Republic, who never appeared in a Concacaf futsal tournament before, started constructing their own team on 27 February. And while the Spanish-speaking country created on outfit from players who already played the sport, Konstin selected only one player, Jameel Neptune, with previous experience of the game—as he opted for outfield players instead.

Three such outfield players, Ché Benny, Keston George and Dylon King, did relatively well in Guatemala and Benny stole headlines with an extraordinary opening goal last night. But it was a stretch to say that Konstin’s other selections looked comfortable on the futsal court.

Add Trinidad and Tobago’s pre-tournament friendly defeats against Costa Rica to Konstin’s overall tally and the American coach had four games at the helm of the National Futsal Team and lost them all, with a goal differential of eight scored and 25 conceded.

On the one hand, Trinidad and Tobago, who were previously coached by Strike Squad captain Clayton ‘JB’ Morris, have never beaten Costa Rica or Guatemala at futsal.

On the other, the Warriors, who were Caribbean Futsal champs in 2004 and 2008 and bronze medalists in 2016, had never lost to a team within the region before outside of Cuba and Curaçao. (Cuba participated in six Concacaf Championships since 1996 and advanced to the Futsal World Cup from five of them.)

It is debatable, then, whether Konstin has left the Futsal Team in better shape than he found them.

The American is unlikely to face pushback in his plea for the TTFA to invest more in the sport, though.

“[The] TTFA has to keep building upon this,” said Konstin. “Futsal can be a big time future for the country, for the communities, especially in the schools… It’s a no-brainer.

“[…] I highly, highly recommend that the TTFA goes out there and starts building futsal courts and building leagues, so one day the TTFA will win a World Cup in futsal.”

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

T&T Futsal & Beach Soccer - Room for growth?

T&T Futsal & Beach Soccer - Room for growth?
By Colin Murray (T&T Guardian)

With COVID-19 cases spiralling out of control and the death rate rising like if one is watching some form of Sci-Fi film along with the newly enforced State of Emergency, one is hopeful that as Trinis, we all finally wake up to the reality that this virus frighteningly is with us. As a result, there is truly no other choice but to follow the strict guidelines of the Ministry of Health; stay at home please unless you are faced with no alternative such as going out for food/medical supplies or if you are unable to work from home.

This stay at home measure gives us more time to catch up on our sports as the rest of the world seems to be getting back slowly but surely to some kind of normality. The English Premier League has allowed teams with a home fixture in the final two rounds to accommodate 10,000 fans into their venues but still adhering to guidelines - wearing masks etc. Two tournaments that have piqued my interest were the CONCACAF Futsal Championship held in Guatemala City which led to 4 countries qualifying for the FIFA Futsal World Cup in Lithuania from September 12 to October 6, 2021. The other tournament which is being played currently in Costa Rica is the 2021 CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championships. Trinidad and Tobago are in a tough group with hosts Costa Rica and the United States.

The top two teams from each of the 3 groups and the two best third-place teams advance to the quarter-finals even though the beach Soca Warriors have lost their first two games, they can still go through if they win their final game convincingly. The prize for the finalists will be guaranteed spots at the 2021 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup in Moscow, Russia from August 19 - 29. However, let's journey back to the Futsal Soca Warriors who lost to newcomers Dominican Republic (DR) 6-2 and then to the hosts Guatemala 4-3 in a much closer encounter. Admittedly I did not expect much from the futsal men. I did not believe that their preparation was good enough and they looked tactically out of depth against the DR who seemed more determined than T&T. Perhaps as newcomers to the tournament, they were keen to prove that they had every right to be taking part and they were not going to be the whipping boys for other teams.

I’m uncertain if the futsal Soca Warriors underestimated the DR but they never got into the game and so, after losing the encounter, mission impossible was next on the agenda to beat one of the tournament favourites - the host country. The task was not just to win but win by 4 clear goals. T&T showed effort as they gave the Guatemalans a good fight and in the end, they were unlucky to lose. I kept wondering where this team was against the DR. Why didn't they play like this as if they did, they would have won their opening game. Che Benny scored one of the goals of the tournament but the team should have found reason to believe that there is potential for future success with better preparation.

The question is where does T&T go from here concerning futsal? Some form of research will prove that most of the top countries have proper run leagues and the correct facilities to play futsal. The venue in Guatemala looked in pristine condition. Somehow, T&T needs to get some sort of facility to match what I saw in Guatemala. There exists a culture of small goal football in this country so I believe that with proper planning, T&T can compete with the top CONCACAF countries when it comes to futsal. I am uncertain whether a development programme exists for futsal in the country and hopefully the Ministry of Sport or the Sports Company will meet more in-depth with the futsal officials to find out the way forward. The Key will be ascertaining how interest can be garnered in the sport to attract more players and how to develop the sport. A proper plan must be articulated. At times, T&T’s preparations and subsequent performances in many of these competitions amplify the view held by some that the team plays because of its membership with CONCACAF and must simply participate.

The T&T beach soccer squad seemed to have been better prepared even though they lost their opening games. Again, how many times have we seen various national teams go to tournaments not adequately prepared and just depend on raw talent? We all know that talent alone is not enough but somehow this team seemed different. FIFA has made beach soccer into a bigger sport than originally when it was first played. There would be the detractors who would quickly say this type of football is only good for when you go to Maracas Beach and you want to sweat before taking a dip. But like any other sport, in beach soccer one has to plan tactically against your opponents, where is their strength etc.

I understand the sand in Costa Rica is different to the sand where other countries play. The variation with the bounce on this sand appears to be unnerving for the teams. For example, in T&T, the ball typically sticks in the sand with little to no bounce - this seems to be the complete opposite to what many teams are accustomed to. All the countries were only allowed 45 minutes to train at the venue so the Costa Ricans seemed to have a significant advantage by playing at home.

Some of T&T’s shooting and movement left much to be desired. However, the team showed a good spirit, never gave up and fighting the Costa Ricans right to the final whistle was indeed admirable. They came up short by 5 goals to 3. I thought they would have done better against the Americans as like T&T, acclimatising to the conditions would have also been difficult for the US team but their shooting was excellent and they seemed very composed when they were in front of the beach warriors goal. Losing 5-2 was another disappointment for the team however, with those difficult games behind the T&T team, there is still hope they can beat Turks & Caicos by a wide margin and sneak into the quarter-finals and who knows what can happen from there.

In my view, there is room in the sporting landscape for both futsal and beach soccer to become popular. Let us start a league, train coaches, match officials etc. and introduce the games to the younger people ensuring the difference between all the types of football that is played in the country. The futsal national team showed great promise and the officials must ensure the momentum is kept up and that T&T teams don’t just wait until the next tournament comes around. In speaking with the beach soccer officials, I know they have plans for the advancement of beach soccer in this country - or should we call it beach football? Let's hope both sports further put T&T on the world map.
