Dwight's success vs Soca Warrior success??
« on: March 22, 2007, 09:06:03 AM »
This story is dated December 9, 1999.  While reading it, it just came to mind that we cant really say that some of our players never got the chance to show their worth at some top clubs.  It also made me think about the impact of the WC as opposed to dwight's success.

In my opinion, we had more people on trial due to Yorke's success rather than the soca warrior's trip to germany.

wha allyuh think?

DWIGHT YORKE has blazed something of a trail when it comes to Trinidad and Tobago stars looking to leave their sunny climes for a crack at a career in football in England.

Manchester United`s £12.6 million man has already been joined by the likes of Shaka Hislop, Tony Rougier and Stern John in coming to Britain and several more of his compatriots are moving out of The Carribbean in a bid to secure professional contracts.

Derek King, a defender, is trying to impress Southampton boss Dave Jones while forward Gary Glasgow is hoping for a trial period at Newcastle after previous spells with Sheffield Wednesday and Manchester City.

Even Chester City are getting in on the act by taking a first-hand look at Michael McCormie and Angus Eve. McCormie is a goalkeeper hoping to follow in Hislop`s footsteps and Eve usually plays in midfield

Who was the best player from T&T at the time of Yorke signing at Man United?

It has always been said Wendell Moore was a better player than Yorke. Colvin Hutchinson was another player than many believed shouldn't have come back home. Call him another Latas in the making. Warren Butler had all the skill to take him very far. He just didn't carry on.

Dwight's success can always be tossed in John barnes' success and so on and so forth. But he just had the special something to take him to the top.

.......

I have heard similar statements about Wendell a couple of times and tend to think that there is a lot of truth in it.  Especially since Bertille St. Clair once said that Moore is the only person who was better than Dwight.

Don’t know what to make about your statement on Hutchinson.  In an old video on which G. Taylor and the owner of Villa were talking about the match in Tobago and the tryouts, they did not speak that highly of Colvin.

It kinda unfair to compare Dwight and Wendell because Dwight was a lot younger than Wendell.

Wendell Moore, at the SSFL level, is probably the best talent I have seen come out of Tobago.  And is plenty talent come out of Tobago....Wendell, Dwight, Hutchinson, Terry Williams, Keon Daniel just to name a few.  Signal Hill was no one man team in Wendell & Dwight times.  It was no coincidence that they absolutely dominated the SSFL for as long as they did.

There is no way to tell if he had the mental make up to succeed at the highest level of the game like Dwight has.  That in my opinion is what puts Dwight over the top of most T&T athletes.  He surmounted tremendous odds to succeed at the highest level of the game.

When one considers where he came from, what he had to go through, and what he has accomplished, it is truly remarkable and a testament to the man.

What i was trying to compare was the fact that after the world cup not many of our players had doors open to them as oposed to the time when dwight was blazing away in England and alot of people wanted to see what more Trinidad and Tobago had to offer.

Warren Butler no way near Dwight class pardner!! I think he had a very good left foot, but he not in Dwight league!

I think success opens doors and Dwight's success was unprecedented in this part of the world and hence he had the greatest impact on opening doors for other players!

ah love it!!
