CAN YOU SPOT THE CRICKETERS IN THE POST

Ode to His Excellency Brian Charles Lara. Written to celebrate 400 N.O.

(Can spot the cricketers mentioned in the passage below?)

There he stands atop the cricket world, Brian Charles Lara. Some say

he was tailor made for greatness. His Excellency himself will be the first

to tell you that it all started with me an dad, as he pays tribute to his

parents, fairbrothers and his sisters.

From the time he was christened in the chapel, his fame spread from

border to the banks of the rivers in India. Some say he was nurse with

a bat. At age 15 he became dean of all batsmen in his

category “holding court” as he hogg the headlines in the dailies.

At the test level when the King comes to the wicket, don with his

white West Indian uniform, he declare Waugh on all bowlers. He bats

with such ferocity and flair, it takes your brett away as he is always in

the hunt for runs. Pace men and spinners alike are treated as a “lamb

to the slaughter” and as a “butcher with a lance” he heats up the

place, to be brutally frank. His innings of 277 in Sydney was made with

gale force and finesse, the mark of a genius.

His match winning knock of 153 not out against Australia was so

sublime it won him the title of bishop, prince and banner man.

His knocks of 213 and 100 against the might Aussies, made it three

tons in a row, came just in time, sobers the mind as he garner support

for his captaincy and prevented a boycott of support from the public.

Bravo for his exploits at the ARG will last for weeks; he turned a gray

situation into the best innings by an individual, and probably prompted

some trumpet sound by the angel Gabriel. He sure is destined for the

hall of fame, as he has become the holder of numerous records.

England you were warn of his hooks, cuts drives and pulls, a genius

couldn’t be held down for a series. His performance will inspire every

Caribbean jack, sonniboy and girl, even Richard son. This was no small

achievement, “true man” as the Jamaicans will say.

Although West Indies cricket is underwood at the moment the

Bangladesh home tour may provide some phillip to marshal the team

onto a path of success. Just a layman view.

Perhaps the epitome of a Trinidadian is the child in the third row class with a dark skin and crinkly plaits who looks at you out of decidedly Chinese eyes and announces herself as Jacqueline Maharaj.- Merle Hodge
