Sir Viv backs Sarwan for West Indies captaincy
« on: April 27, 2007, 05:35:48 AM »
Just read this article on cricinfo.com. Viv also says that he likes Ganga as a leader aswell but says his chances are hampered by not being an automatic choice in the ODI squad. I agree with viv, we should go with sarwan as captain with ganga as his deputy, and see how we go from there. As I have said before I want Ganga to establish himself in the test side before he takes on the captaincy. I wouldnt want him to take the captaincy then endure a complete loss of form and end being dropped from the west indies team. If in 3 or 4 years time (and that is the period of time a new captain and coach need in order to be judged, unless something disastrous occurs) the team hasnt really progressed, but ganga has scored runs and is now an automatic choice then i have no problem with him being captain.

Although i beleive Ganga is the better suited to be captain i now hope Sarwan gets it.

Why? Because all this nonsense about Sarwan being able to command respect of the younger players, and Sarwan having been groomed for job will all be put to bed if we go on a very long losing streak with him as captain.

If Sarwan fails as captain then Ganga can take over then in 1 or 2 years maximum.

If Ganga takes over now there will be too much pressure on him, because if we lose games because of the lack of the quality and dedication in the team, people will be banging on about how Sarwan should be captain, and Ganga will not get a fair chance as captain.

I can just see everyone in the media and in the current team getting the knifes out for Ganga if he gets the captaincy before Sarwan. They will all start moaning that Sarwan had been groomed and commands the respect of the other players. The job will be made impossible for Ganga at this stage.

but remember this is Viv reasoning for saraman
"I felt he had it. Captains demand respect. All the other players felt comfortable around him."

Really....jus cause the players feel comfortable around him is no way to pick a captain.
BUt as said before......he is the "best" man to get the scape goat work yes.... but dont get tie up eh.....i glad if we win ;D but i wont feel it as much if we lose.

Good point but to be fair we have been on a very long losing streak for a very long time. Since 2002ish, so really Sarwan can't do any worse. We are already getting whitewashed by every team we play, the only worse scenario than that is being whitewashed in the carribbean. But as I say, I have changed my mind, Sarwan is the right choice for this moment in time. The other serious candidate, Ganga has not fully established himself in the side in both test and odi cricket. Contrary to popular belief we cannot afford to appoint a "specialist" captain. You cannot go into international cricket with passengers in the team. Sarwan is established in both test and odi cricket at the moment, is the "favourite" of many west indian commentators. Of course u could go Chris Gayle if u want...
