Third Day scores in CFU Youth Cup
05-Aug-2005
Shaun Fuentes

Jamaica continued their heavy scoring to complete their second victory in as many matches as Group B action in the Caribbean Football Union Youth Cup continued at the Marvin Lee Stadium (MLS), Centre of Excellence on Friday.

Playing against Bahamas who were huge 16-1 winners over British Virgin Islands the previous day, the young “Reggae Boyz” proved to be to be too tough for their opponents, ending up 7- 1 winners.

Dever Orgill was the pick of their scorers with goals in the 10th, 13th, 51st, 58th and 69th minutes. Bahamas Duran Mitchell had made it 3-1 by pulling a goal back for Bahamas in the 34th minute. But a minute later Christopher Waugh scored his sixth goal in the tournament to leave Jamaica up 4-1. John Ross Doyley also netted earlier on in the 24th minute.

In the second match at the MLS, St Vincent and the Grenadines inflicted another heavy defeat against British Virgin Islands comprising of Under 12 players.

Michael Collis led the way with six goals as the Vincentians bounced back from their defeat to Jamaica on Thursday.

They went ahead as early as the second minute through Ronsil Badnock. Then in the 12th minute Akeeno Hazelwood sent a perfect lob over goalie Roan Thornton from out on the right. Collis then got his first of the hot afternoon with a well taken free kick in the 18th. Badnock(35th) and Jim Ollivierre in the 28th minute pushed SVG to a comfortable 5-0 lead.

Hazelwood then struck a powerful free kick over Thornton for a 7-0 advantage in the 38th minute as Jica Charles had made it half dozen goals for SVG a minute earlier with a well placed shot from the centre of the box.

Collis was on the mark again in the 41st and BVI were unfortunate not to get on the scoresheet when Clayton Mcogg sent a thunderous right footed free kick from the top centre of the box against the cross bar with goalie Casey De Freitas beaten all ends up.

But BVI’s continued to concede with  Collis scoring further items in the  47th, 51st, 80th  and 84th (penalty). Badnock added another in the 71st and Myron Samuel rounded it off in the 86th minute.

Down at Guaracara Park in Group D action, Suriname overcame the difficult heavy conditions to get past a stubborn Guyana outfit 4-0 in the first match of a double header which also had Martinique coming away hard fought 2-0 winners over Puerto Rico.

Suriname’s main marksman, Giovanni Drenthe was sent off for dissent by Netherlands Antilles referee Jgranoth Martis in the second half but not after just eleven seconds to put his team ahead. Then he doubled the lead in the 10th minute.Donovan Chobin the took the score to 3-0 with a penalty strike. Despite trailing, Guyana never gave in and continued to play with a desire to at least score one and they were unfortunate not to have done so when Bevon Moseley’s curling free kick from the edge of the box went just over in the 87th minute. But Guyana’s misery was extended in added on time when Delano Chan Jet Soe was sent free on the right and he rounded goalkeeper Trilloyd Allen to slot home for a 4-0 final score.

In the second game, Martinique laboured to a 2-0 win over a tricky Puerto Rico eleven.

After just six minutes, the more organized Martinique team almost went ahead when Peter Louise’s close range effort went over bar. Four minutes later, Mario Janvier also shot inches wide as the Puerto Ricans were forced on the backfoot.

But the French boys got deservedly took a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute through Fofaua Mori in the 14th minute when  he made no mistake from close up following a right side cross which the Puerto Ricans failed to clear.

Martinique’s captain Jaetan Sidney marshaled their midfield and nippy forwards Jeremy Mongis and Janvier continued to thwart the opposing side which conceded a second goal two minutes before half time as Janvier added his name to the scoresheet.
