Blatter: Regional rotation no longer crucial for World Cup

By NANCY ARMOUR, AP National Writer
June 24, 2007

CHICAGO (AP) -- The World Cup's growth in popularity could cost the United States.

FIFA's executive committee still hasn't decided if it will stay with regional rotation of World Cup sites past 2014. The North and Central American and Caribbean region is due to get the World Cup in 2018 under the current system, and the United States plans to bid.

But the World Cup has become such a big event worldwide -- in fan interest, television ratings and ticket sales -- that it no longer matters where it's played, FIFA president Sepp Blatter said Sunday.

"Now the executive committee is confronted with the question, What will happen next?" Blatter said, speaking before the Gold Cup final. "If we go on with the rotation as it is, then the next one should go to the CONCACAF. On the other hand, you have people asking that every third time, the World Cup should come back to Europe. Why?

"We have realized it's not important where the World Cup is played concerning the impact of the World Cup," he said. "The product nowadays, for emotion, for passion, for bringing people together is such ... that it is not so important where you play."

The World Cup will be played in South Africa in 2010. Brazil is the sole candidate to host in 2014, and FIFA's executive committee is scheduled to vote in November.

Blatter also said that while South Africa needs to improve its transportation system, he is confident the country can put on a successful World Cup. He toured stadium sites and met with officials from the government and local organizing committee during a visit there last week.

Security won't be an issue, either, Blatter promised.

"In all big cities, there is a problem of security and there is a lot of crime. But when you know where the danger is, you can take the adequate measures," he said. There is unity now in this country behind this competition. Let's trust South Africa and the African continent they will be able to receive all the visitors with open arms and open hearts."

Blatter also defended FIFA's ban on high-altitude games, which has caused a furor in several South American countries. FIFA last month banned international tournaments and World Cup qualifying matches at any stadium above 8,200 feet. That rules out games in the capitals of Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and the stadiums of leading teams in Peru, Chile and Mexico.

The problem isn't the altitude, but the lack of time players have to adjust to it, Blatter said. The South America region continues to play its World Cup qualifiers on back-to-back days, playing games Saturday and Sunday, and Tuesday and Wednesday.

"There is no possibility for acclimatization," Blatter said. "If you don't have time for this acclimatization, then your health can suffer.

"We have never said you can't play," he added. "This is only for the qualifications for the World Cup. Club competitions, national competitions, they can play wherever they want to play."

CONCACAF president Jack Warner acknowledged there have been some problems with refereeing at the Gold Cup, but said none were deliberate. He also refused to single out any referees who had problems.

The United States advanced to Sunday's final after the Canadians had a goal waved off in the final minute of stoppage time on a disputed offsides call.

"Referees are human beings like anyone else. They can make mistakes at any level and I admit some mistakes have been made," Warner said. "But at no point and time has it been fixed for any country. It would be an absurd thing to do."

Steups. So how long has the WC been rotated. Steups 2010 and 2014. They want to give the Cup to the highest bidder. Man I'm fed up of this corruption in football. FIFA is spoiling our game.

rotation is a good idea, so it's a good idea to have some measures in place but it shouldn't be a strict matter of cycling through all the confederations.

A disproportionate fraction of the countries that have the infrastructure to host the world cup are UEFA members and they have the football history to back it up to.  Giving a world cup to Concacaf is the same as giving it to the US almost every time and Mexico every now and then.  South Africa was the African choice by default and even they struggling to put everything together.  Only 2 or 3 Asian countries are viable candidates.

I really doh see what de big noise and to-do is about.  I personally doh care where it's played...I go try and be in dat.  As long as is not de same countries getting it all de time I good.  One reason why I would vote tuh end de rotation thing is the time zone differences.  Was smart from a marketing standpoint to go to Korea/Japan...but waking up 2-3 in de morning to ketch ah match was some nonsense.

The rotation was never going to last a full cycle and the US doesn’t have to worry.

FIFA needs European WCs to make money. The only real contender with that is the US. If England gets 2018 the US will be faves for 2022 because it is not going back to South America for a while. Morocco, China, Egypt and them places will have a decent wait for a next WC hosting chance.
THE WARRIORS WILL NOT BE DENIED.

England's 2018 World Cup hopes rest on Warner

Sunday, June 24th 2007

ENGLAND'S hopes of staging the 2018 FIFA World Cup could rest on winning the support of FIFA vice-president Jack Warner.

High-level talks about the bid have taken place between Government officials and FIFA figures, and the feedback is that the English will need to persuade Warner and his ally Chuck Blazer to support the 2018 finals returning to Europe, a report in the Edinburgh Evening News last week stated.

If strict rotation of the World Cup were to continue, it would be the turn of Warner and Blazer's CONCACAF federation to be hosts--in effect one of Mexico, USA or Canada--so the Football Association will have offer a pretty big carrot in return for their backing when FIFA's executive committee make the all-important decision in November.

Europe's chances of being given the tournament again and ending strict rotation do look good, however--as high as 80 per cent, according to one source.

The importance of FA chairman Geoff Thompson's election to be Britain's FIFA vice-president following the John McBeth fiasco could be a plus for England.

Warner is a fan of Thompson and said he may abandon his campaign to abolish the British FIFA vice-presidency until his four-year term is over. Warner said: "Geoff is the one man for whom I may temper my enthusiasm for changing the FIFA statutes."

Last month, McBeth was axed by his own associations as FIFA vice-president as one member of football's world body claimed good had prevailed over evil.

At a meeting of the four Home Nations in Zurichthe outgoing SFA president, who is accused of racist remarks, was stripped of his post.

Scotland, England, Wales and Ireland decided to act before FIFA could take action against McBeth.

He had been nominated for the high-powered FIFA role but after he suggested African and Caribbean nations were tainted by corruption and greed, condemnation had been widespread.

Warner is in Chicago for today's CONCACF Gold Cup Final between United States and Mexico
