Real Madrid wants to forge ties with Jamaica

Friday, March 09, 2007

REAL Madrid, one of the world's richest and most successful football clubs, has expressed interest in forging ties with Jamaica, through the Spanish club's Social Integration Sports Academies programme.

The programme, which is run by the Real Madrid Foundation, has the aim of promoting sports and sports values, and improving the lives of underprivileged youngsters by providing access to social services.

Director General of the Real Madrid Foundation, Carlos Abella, told Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller, who toured the club's Madrid complex on Tuesday, that the academies' model had been established in several Latin American countries
to benefit more than 3,000 youngsters. He said that new academies were slated to start this year in Mexico and Uruguay.

He said that the academies go well beyond promoting sports as they provided opportunities for education, vocational training, psychological assistance and medical care.

Simpson Miller commended the 10-year-old foundation on its social outreach initiatives, noting that they provided great opportunities for young people, especially those from humble beginnings.

The prime minister's visit to Real Madrid was part of her four-city European tour, which has already taken her to London for a meeting with the Jamaican community, and Brussels for a meeting with the African Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Committee of Ambassadors, where she reaffirmed Jamaica's commitment to the ACP Group.

She also met with the Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt and president of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso.
In Spain, she met with current and prospective investors in Jamaica and received an
enthusiastic response.

Stupidity is an elemental force for which no earthquake is a match."

And yet Jamaica who has done so poorly in 2006 don't have the football problems that post-World Cup T&T has.  ??? ???

The Foundation in Jamaica (real madrid)

The Foundation in Jamaica

Real Madrid signs a deal to open a football academy on the Caribbean island

The Real Madrid Foundation and the Spanish-Jamaican Foundation have signed a declaration of intent that will lead to the creation of a new football academy of social integration in Jamaica.

The Real Madrid Foundation has taken another step in its efforts to take football to the most underprivileged countries by signing a declaration of intent with the Spanish-Jamaican Foundation, a group of investors on the island. With their help, the Foundation will establish a new Sports School for Social Integration. This declaration of intent, signed yesterday by Real Madrid Foundation Director, Carlos Abella and the Spanish Ambassador to Jamaica, Jesús Silva was received with great enthusiasm in the Caribbean country, the first that will boast of a school of this sort and, as Abella pointed out to local media, “the first in a non-Spanish speaking country.”
The first mention of the creation of this new school came during Jamaican Prime Minister, Portia Simpson's visit to Real Madrid City last March, when she got an up close look at the Club's extraordinary organisation and its projects to develop young footballers.

After this initial contact and the creation of the Spanish-Jamaican Foundation, the next step was to finalise the agreement in the Jamaican capital of Kingston. Attending the event were Carlos Abella, former Real Madrid player Manuel Velázquez, and directors of the Jamaican Football Federation, including its Secretary General Burchell Gibson, who expressed his gratitude to the Real Madrid Foundation because “this academy will help improve football in our country and make our kids better people.”

Also present were Wendell Donswell, assistant coach of the Jamaican national team, who pointed out that “it's more than just a sports recreation centre, its a centre that will develop future generations,” and Aaron Lawrence, national team goalkeeper coach. According to Lawrence, this school's main goal should be “the total development of these youngsters. In fact, to emphasise our commitment to that goal, we will only be working with kids who are able to maintain a 50 per cent average in school. I strongly believe that is going to take programmes like these to lay the foundation required for future Jamaican teams to qualify for the World Cup.”

The Real Madrid Foundation then extended an invitation to Aaron Lawrence to visit Real Madrid City so that he can learn new coaching techniques that can later be applied at the academy.

The school will be located on lands donated by the John Rollins Foundation in Rose Hall, St. James. Michelle Rollins, President of this Foundation, was also present for the the signing and commented afterward, “We are happy and proud to be a part of this wonderful initiative and we are expecting it to be a resounding success.”

This is not FA business...this is a youth development program that uses sport as a vehicle for social upliftment.

T&T's post World Cup troubles have nothing to do with the plight of the youth...which this overture seeks to address.  Rather than look for opportunities to take potshots at TnT football, why don't you extract your head from your ass and focus on the issue at hand.

Real Madrid-styled academy expected by next January

A football academy to benefit underprivileged children on the north coast should become operational by January 2008, following Tuesday's signing of a declaration of intent between the Spanish-Jamaica Foundation and representatives of Spanish champions Real Madrid at the Rose Hall Complex.

According to Jesus Silva, Spain's Ambassador to Jamaica who is also president of the Spanish-Jamaica Foundation - formed by the Spanish groups currently investing in Jamaica - the first phase of the proposed academy, which is being modelled on the Real Madrid Foundation's Schools for Social Integration, is estimated to cost US$500,000.

"There is no problem of financial support for this project. I mean, the Spanish companies represented on the board have expressed a commitment to do it and they are willing and ready to finance it," Silva said at a press conference at the Spanish Embassy offices at the Courtleigh Corporate Centre in New Kingston yesterday.

He said that figure for the first phase of the project, which includes two pitches, classrooms, changing rooms, offices and parking facilities, could be increased if needed.

"It could be less, could be more and of course, if we have other partners that want to join it... the figure might be even higher, because the more partners we have the bigger we can go and the better we can do the installations," Silva said, adding that his organisation has tentatively budgeted US$100,000 to run the project for the first year.

The academy, which is being erected on land donated by Michelle Rollins and is to be managed by former national goalkeeper Aaron Lawrence, will cater to youngsters between the ages of 7 and 20.

Lawrence said youngsters wishing to join the academy must be averaging at least 50 per cent in their schoolwork.
"So it (the academy) will always be something for them (youngsters) to look at and to do well in school," the former Reggae Boy explained.

Between 100-150 youngsters from St James, Trelawny, Westmoreland and Hanover are expected to enrol in the programme in the initial phase, with plans for an increase to approximately 350 in the medium to long term.

Lawrence is scheduled to travel to Spain in September to get first-hand knowledge of how Real Madrid operates their football academies.

According to Carlos Aballa, director general of the Real Madrid Foundation who arrived in the island on Sunday, along with former Madrid midfielder Manuel Velazquez, "The academy will transcend purely sports education, extending to social integration, training the youngsters through solidarity, community and social service to ensure they will be able to cope in different aspect of their daily lives and improve short-term job prospects."

Arbella also said Jamaica is the first non-Spanish speaking country to benefit from the Real Madrid Foundation, which has established Social Integration Schools in Chile, Bolivia, El Salvador, Panama, Argentina, Mexico and Uruguay.
