Ba inspires rampant Newcastle

Newcastle striker Demba Ba signed off in style as Manchester United's hopes of retaining their Barclays Premier League title were dealt a fresh blow with a 3-0 defeat.

The free signing plundered his 15th goal of the season in what seems certain to be his final appearance for the Magpies before heading off on African Nations Cup duty with Senegal to set United on the way to their first back-to-back league defeats for 10 months.

Frenchman Yohan Cabaye sealed a first victory over Sir Alex Ferguson's men in more than 10 years with a stunning 47th-minute free-kick with Phil Jones' late own goal simply cementing their seventh place in the table.

Even Wayne Rooney's return from his exile could not spark United into life as Newcastle added to the pain inflicted on his side by lowly Blackburn at the weekend in front of a delighted crowd of 52,299.

Keeper Anders Lindegaard, who has repeatedly warned he had not joined United simply to "pick his nose'', was handed a start in place of David de Gea, unlike Magpies midfielder Hatem Ben Arfa, who was named only among the substitutes despite declaring roughly the same sentiment in the run-up to the game.

Pardew sent out his side having seen them win just one of their last eight league games and knowing the challenge of improving on that run could hardly be much more difficult against a wounded United.

However, his players set about their task with a real relish and while they were forced to defend in determined fashion throughout, they did so more than competently with skipper Fabricio Coloccini and Mike Williamson in particularly miserly form.

In addition, they produced enough of an attacking threat not only to keep the champions on their toes, but to take a lead they rarely looked like relinquishing.

Indeed, Pardew's men, having survived an early scare when Coloccini just managed to cut out Ryan Giggs' attempted through-ball to Dimitar Berbatov in the opening minute, took the game to the visitors in the early stages.

Ba was uncharacteristically wasteful when he failed to make a meaningful connection with Danny Simpson's teasing fourth-minute cross, and Cabaye tested Lindegaard's mettle with a shot from distance two minutes later.

The Dane also had to deal with Cheick Tiote's skidding long-range drive, although as United worked their way into the game, it was they who started to threaten.

Tim Krul had to make a smart reaction save from Nani's 12th-minute snapshot, and the keeper managed to claim the rebound before the predatory Rooney was able to pounce.

Berbatov clipped the outside of the post with a deflected header three minutes later, but Newcastle were not content to sit back and defend.

They had been awarded and converted a contentious penalty in the 1-1 draw at Old Trafford in November, and they were appealing for another with 25 minutes gone, this time in vain, after Ba went down in a tangle of legs with Rio Ferdinand, the man whose challenge on Ben Arfa had been ruled illegal on home turf.

But the former West Ham frontman got his chance 12 minutes before the break, and as so often this season, took it in spectacular fashion.

Shola Ameobi climbed high above Phil Jones to flick on Krul's long free-kick and Ba swivelled instantly to smash a right-foot volley high past the stranded Lindegaard.

Ryan Taylor curled a 44th-minute free-kick just over after Tiote had left Rooney for dead with a neat trick and Ba prompted Giggs to foul him 30 yards out.

Lindegaard also had to deal with a nastily dipping Ba effort from distance in injury-time with the Magpies sensing an opportunity.

Jones' first season at Old Trafford has been largely exemplary, but the youngster's difficult evening on Tyneside took a further turn for the worse within seconds of the restart.

He barged Ba to the ground 30 yards out as the striker threatened to run away from him, and Cabaye curled the resulting free-kick in off the underside of the crossbar with Lindegaard once again helpless.

Central defender Williamson headed a 55th-minute Ryan Taylor corner just over with the Magpies pinning the visitors back to thwart their efforts to launch a recovery.

United would have been back in it within four minutes had it not been for old boy Danny Simpson, who somehow managed to block Rooney's point-blank volley from a Nani cross.

The visitors were enjoying their best spell of the game as Newcastle's defending became increasingly desperate.

But with no sign of a breakthrough, Rooney made way for midfielder Anderson with 15 minutes remaining, although United's efforts became increasingly toothless with the home side simply needing to maintain concentration.

That they did, and Jones' miserable evening was complete in the final minute of normal time when he headed Krul's deep free-kick into his own net.

If was Arsenal ManU fans would of said Man vs Boys. Today BA and Amoebi batter the ManU back line. While Newcastle midfield dominated physically.
Good game for Newcastle overall they deserve the win.

Until we get better and stronger in mdifield we will not win Europe and have difficulty competing with teams who have very strong midfield play in England. If we can't control the midfield, teams will have free rain on the defense. I am waiting to see who, what and when we buy. I say play the youth, they can't be worse than what is in there now. Jones needs to go back to playing defense and learn how to be a defender, enough of this midfield crap. Leanr how to defend properly first.

You wouldn't think Newcastle played the same congested fixture list as ManU the way they ran today.

True talk...and on current form, Man U could be looking at a trophy-less season...(cyar count Community Shield)
Carling Cup: Done
CL: Done
FA Cup: Away game to Man City
Europa League: First game against Ajax
Premier League: They still have to play Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs and City away
On top of that, injuries and a weak (physically) mid field
well yes

Don't cry injury, because when allyuh hit Arsenal hard cuff and Arsenal fans cried injury, ManU fans jump up and say
every team have injuries.  Take it, take it  ;D

Nobody is bigger than the boss – not even Rooney
Ferguson has parted with dissenters before in spite of their stature – or because of it

Glenn Moore  Saturday 07 January 2012

From Paul McGrath and Norman Whiteside in the early days, then, as his authority was cemented, to Paul Ince, David Beckham, Jaap Stam, Roy Keane and Carlos Tevez, Sir Alex Ferguson has always been prepared to move on good players, even great ones, who challenge him either directly or through the way they live.

Wayne Rooney, it appears, may be about to find that he is as dispensable as the others.

There are times when this refusal to countenance dissent has weakened the team in the short term, such as when Stam was forced out, but even at 70 years of age Ferguson takes the long view. Rooney would be very difficult to replace, but it is harder to control a dressing room when some of its members believe themselves more important than the boss.

Ferguson has said that a manager can never lose an argument, suggesting he has not, but this is only partly true. Players have more power now and he was unable to hold on to Cristiano Ronaldo and Gerard Pique. He has also been prepared to compromise when he needs a player. As Keane recently revealed, he and Ferguson had many disputes when Keane was in his prime. Ferguson always found a way to make peace, to accommodate his warrior captain. Until, that is, Keane's powers began to wane. Then Keane was shown the door. As he said last month, "the difference then was that I was 34".

Rooney is only 26, and still growing as a player, but his performances lack the reliability of Keane. In the last couple of years Rooney's form has either been red hot, or ice cold. While some players – John Terry would be the obvious example – play to par regardless of what maelstrom may be enveloping them, extraneous factors seem to weigh Rooney down. When that happens his body language betrays a lack of desire and he seems to draw within himself before lashing out, as with England in Montenegro, in apparent frustration.

The split between Ferguson and Rooney is understood to date back to the infamous transfer request a year ago. Then Ferguson gave in, swallowing his pride to welcome Rooney back into a dressing room the quality of whose occupants Rooney had questioned. As when he settled with Keane, Ferguson had considered the bigger picture and he seemed to be rewarded. In the second half of last season, Rooney scored nine goals in 13 Premier League starts as United regained the title. All seemed well.

Rooney began this campaign scoring at a rate superior to a goal a game, but then came the arrest of his father and uncle for alleged involvement in a match-fixing scheme. The following day he played against Montenegro, scored, but was then dismissed. Since then he has scored five goals in 15 games. In itself that would not be a problem, not least because he played on several occasions in midfield because of United's lack of alternatives, and did well there. What appears to have infuriated Ferguson is the Christmas night out with Jonny Evans and Darron Gibson, an allegedly dishevelled and disinterested appearance at training the following day, and subsequent sulky performance when recalled at Newcastle.

While Ferguson has shown in the past he is prepared to give way when dealing with star players – his initial reaction to Eric Cantona's lunge into the crowd at Selhurst Park was to sack him – there is a line he, and any other manager, must draw. When a senior player becomes mutinous he has to be moved on. Otherwise he will become the focus of a negative clique in the dressing room, and a bad example on the training ground. The latter aspect is crucial at United. A hunger for success is not easy to sustain. For years Ferguson has succeeded in driving United on to title after title, and one of the means by which he has done so is through a training ground culture in which senior players set the lead. Keane, Gary Neville, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs ... all outstanding trainers, as were Cantona and Beckham.

New players, and youth players, join United, see how hard the stars work, and follow suit. Giggs is still there, but the others are gone and Rooney is now one of the senior pros. At a time when United's young players have been accused of being complacent Ferguson cannot allow a diminution of commitment. That Ferguson felt he had to discipline Evans and Gibson, too, will not have helped Rooney's cause. It may be Ferguson has decided Rooney has to go because of his stature, not despite it.
