Boynes gives Under-17’s $10m in schols.
« on: July 11, 2007, 05:26:19 AM »
Ministry gives schols to U-17 footballers.
...for qualifying success.
By: Shaun Fuentes (TTFF).
[/size]

Twenty-five members of Trinidad and Tobago’s National Under 17 team will benefit from four-year scholarships as reward from the Ministry of Sport for qualifying for the 2007 FIFA Under 17 World Championship.
This was revealed by Minister of Sport Roger Boynes in a hurriedly arranged press conference by the Ministry at the VIP lounge of the Hasely Crawford Stadium on Tuesday afternoon prior to the team’s departure for Peru the next day.
All members of the team staff, thirty players currently in preparations for next month’s tournament, parents of the players and officials from the TTFF were invited to the function.
Boynes said that the government, the T&T Football Federation, the parents and Professor Ken Julien and Ken Butcher both of the University of T&T, have come up with what they feel is the best possible way to reward the team.
Boynes noted that of the 150 scholarships that will be on offer for sports, 25 of the National Under-17 players will be offered full four-year scholarships at the soon to be launched UTT at a cost $10 million over the said period.
Butcher, the director of development noted that the 25 players will be under the guidance of former national coach Everald “Gally” Cummings and will opened to all areas of learning as they hoped to have 60 per cent of athletes representing T&T at the next Olympics coming out of the institution.
Butcher added that one of the key roles of the Institute of Sport at UTT will be to identify who will have the potential to represent T&T.
In announcing the scholarship offer to the national youth players Boynes said that his government was sending a strong message to the players who would like to continue their education at a tertiary level.
He added, “You all have traveled a long and rocky road to get there and you are now the future of football in this country.
The members of the technical staff headed by coach Anton Corneal were also rewarded for their role in the T&T youngsters qualifying for Korea. This reward, according to Boynes will amount to $200,000 in equipment to go towards enhancing the staff and its services towards training.
The parents will also benefit from having their trips to Korea fully paid for while two staff members from the qualifying phase assistant manager Oswald Davis and teacher Nazir Khan, not carded to travel to the World Championship as part of the team contingent, will also have their trips to Korea funded by the Ministry.
“After a three hour lengthy meeting with the parents we have managed with the help of TSTT and Petrotrin to offer full travel packages for the parents to go to Korea.
“With regards to the technical staff we felt they must also be recognised and we have decided to offer them $200,000 in total to go towards the purchase of equipment for their own personal development.
Boynes also noted that the government recently handed over $2.6 million to the T&TFF through the Sport Company of T&T (Sportt) to assist in covering the cost of the Under-17 players preparation and participation for Korea and another sum of money to go towards the payment of salaries for staff members of the Senior Team he added was also presented to the TTFF on Tuesday.
A 24-man team leaves for Peru on Wednesday and Corneal will later on cut it to a final 21 for Korea. No discussions have yet been made over the possibility of players gaining professional contracts or scholarships outside of T&T and hence being unable to take up the scholarships being offered by the Ministry.

lill question: while the boys dem recieving their higher education(schols, cause all our young footballers have also been exceptional students, right?), where would they be playing their club or higher level, football to promote further skill development, which league, and thus level of football will the UTT team be joining, and how will the Studies and increased Local &/or National training be organized/conducted, and sychronized, or will everyone  jus be in the same program and on the same page, and learn and develop at the same pace ?

idea : 25 different individuals may have 2-25 different hopes, dreams ,needs & aspirations at different stages of their life development. Reward the group, but treat the individuals

This is excellent !!! however.....

Jack Warner will reap benefits at this year Under 17 world cup. The government picking up most of the bill so all the profit from TV rights, sponsors etc will be pocketed !!!!!

Jack wins again.

Still happy for the youths.

Wait, I confused....they getting scholarships to go to UTT, but isn't the government's GATE program supposed to offer free tertiary education to all citizens?  Or is that just free education at UWI only?

Depends on if the gov't puts the money in their hands or just pays the bills directly. If they put the money in their hands, and they head off elsewhere, bet yuh bottom dollar de govt will ask fuh it back.

If the gov't just offers to cover the fees if they take up the gov't schol then if the player takes off on a US schol, is that much less money de gov't have to put out.

I personally know 3 yths from here , one play for our fete-match yth team(ah born T&T yth, talented, no big league football experience), another a girl, plays for a Mtl div. 1 team, bout 3 rd level in this province, non are provincial  level players, farless National. Well they starting full scholarships in the US, this September. Nothing to do with their academics. So my point is if these U17 players/parents want them to leave T&T, for whatever reason, they will be able to go, question may become, how do we get them back ? At some point in the decision making processes, they should have included some input from the parents/players or their representatives. If that has been the case, then my questions are moot.

Sando, then  they don't need it.  It's a great gesture by the gov't.  Spin it how yuh want but you can't have yuh cake and eat it.  It's a scholarship, they don't give you money in hand.  They will pay your tuition etc.  I have no problems with what the gov't is doing.

Think of this.  When Dwight Yorke signed his first deal with Aston Villa, it has a built in clause for education.  What is the odds that Dwight used the money?  I would say slim to none.  The fact is that he had the money available to him but he did not choose to utilize it.

Same thing in this case.  It you attend UTT, you pay nothing.  You don't attend, you get nada....
