237 different reasons
« on: August 01, 2007, 04:57:43 PM »

Anne Marie Owens, National Post, August 1, 2007

A psychological study into why people have sex — which sounds like the kind of intellectual no-brainer that makes academic pursuits seem out of touch with reality — has uncovered a rich and incredibly varied roster of reasons behind coupling.

The list of 237 different reasons, published by researchers at the University of Texas at Austin in the latest issue of the Archives of Sexual Behaviour, shows that people have sex for a wide range of reasons, from the conventional (“they had beautiful eyes,” or “they were too hot to resist”) to the entirely unpredictable (“to change the conversation”) and even inexplicable (“to feel closer to God.”)

The motivations outlined in "Why Humans Have Sex" show sex as a weapon (“I wanted to give someone else a sexually transmitted disease,” “I wanted to even the score with a cheating partner”) and sex as a means to an end (“I wanted a baby,” “I wanted to get a promotion.”)  People have sex for reasons that seem mundane (“I was married and you’re supposed to,” or “I was bored”) and the expected (“It just happened” or “It’s fun.)

The research, culled from undergraduate students, is a fascinating insight into modern sexual behaviour. Here is the full list of 237 reasons for having sex, collected according to various categories in the psychological study including physical, goal oriented, emotional-based and insecurity.
