RARING TO GO – Silvio Spann can’t wait to sign on and play his first game for Wrexham

SILVIO SPANN today admitted he can't wait to complete his move to Wrexham.

Trinidad and Tobago international Spann joined up with the Wrexham squad at the team hotel in Darlington at the weekend and was present when the Reds kicked off the season with a 2-0 defeat against the Quakers.
The 26-year-old has been a target of manager Brian Carey's for some time, although the deal has not yet been completed to bring the midfielder to The Racecourse.
But Spann, who has trained with his 'team-mates', is looking forward to joining Wrexham and linking up with another Trinidadian, Josh Johnson, at the club.
"Of course I want to come to Wrexham and I am really looking forward to getting started," said Spann today. "It is friendly here and I know I will fit in. The lads have taken me in as one of their own
"I am loving it here and I have enjoyed the last three days. I had a great training session yesterday and it was good to be involved again.
"I would love to be another Trinidadian to have played for Wrexham. I have played with Josh at under 23 level for Trinidad and I am sure me coming here would do him good."
Spann is contracted with W Connection in Trinidad and although that deal ends in Christmas, he does not see that preventing him joining Wrexham sooner.
And Spann, who has 28 caps, would also require a work permit.
Although he missed out on last summer's World Cup because of a hamstring injury picked up in training at Carden Park in the run-up to the Germany finals, and then picked up a shoulder injury, Spann should qualify having participated in 75 per cent of his country's matches over the last two years while fit.
And Spann does not foresee any problems in completing the move.
"At the moment I am contracted in Trinidad but I am sure things will get sorted," said Spann. "If they are looking in the direction of improving myself, there should not be a problem in that area. They should come to a conclusion and make it possible for me to play for Wrexham.
"And I don't think there will be any problem in getting a work permit and clearance. The amount of Trinidad caps I have got are in my favour and hopefully I will be over here playing with the lads soon."
Having missed his country's first appearance in the World CUp finals, Spann picked up a shoulder injury in the run up to last winter's Caribe Cup and missed that competition.
"I had surgery on my shoulder and was out for five months," said Spann. "But if we had better facilities, they would have been able to solve the problem sooner.
"We went to Brazil for pre-season and surgery over there was successful. I have recovered from the injury, am getting back to full fitness and can't wait to start playing in Wrexham."
Spann has had pre-season trials at Sunderland and Sheffield United but he is just looking forward to starting his Wrexham career.
"My time in England has been worthwhile. I am just looking to put the hiccups in the past behind me and representing Wrexham, and doing well for them," added Spann.
"First and foremost, I am a team player who will do whatever for the team. Wherever the manager wants me to play, I will to the best of my ability.
"But I am a versatile midfielder who can attack and defend."

EXCITEMENT is growing among Wrexham football fans over the prospect of Trinidad and Tobago international Silvio Spann coming to The Racecourse, after footage of the midfielder scoring a thunderbolt free kick was posted on the internet.

Spann's stunning 40-yard screamer for his country against El Salvador in this summer's CONCACAF Gold Cup tournament has become a favourite on the Youtube website.

And it has become a hot topic on Wrexham fans' websites with supporters hoping Spann, who has been lined up for a move to The Racecourse, can follow in the successful steps of fellow countrymen at the club.

Bruce Clapton, chairman of Wrexham Supporters Trust, said he had viewed the goal on Youtube and was impressed.

He said: "We have had a lot of success with Trinidad and Tobago players over the years and hopefully if he signs, Spann can bring more success.
"Carlos Edwards springs to mind and is now in the Premiership while Dennis Lawrence did very well. Hector Sam on his day was something to behold, Josh Johnson has shown in flashes what he can do and we even had Clayton Ince. The Trinidad link has served us well and hopefully the success will carry on."

Speaking to the Leader's Richard Williams yesterday (August 14), Spann said the goal was one he was particularly proud of, and Reds fans, buoyed by last night's win over Port Vale, will be hoping to see more of the same at The Racecourse.
