Keane is left sweating on Edwards injury

CARLOS EDWARDS was set to undergo a scan today on the hamstring injury which saw him limp out of Sunderland’s 1-1 draw at Birmingham City.
The Trinidad and Tobago international pulled up six minutes from time clutching his left hamstring, seconds after he had raced 45 yards into the penalty area to create a chance for Stern John and the frontman had headed against the crossbar.
Edwards could barely walk and had to go off to avoid making the injury worse, leaving Sunderland to finish the game with 10 men as they had already made the allowed three substitutions.
Edwards missed part of Sunderland’s pre-season due to injury and it is this lack of match-practice which boss Roy Keane blamed for the hamstring problem, admitting he should have taken the winger off earlier to protect him.
Keane said: “Carlos has damaged his hamstring and we will have more news over the next 24 to 48 hours when he has had a scan.
“I probably should have taken him off, because he had missed a bit of pre-season.
“His fitness probably is not at the same level as the other lads’ and when you are tired, that is when you pull a hamstring.”
If Edwards has merely strained his hamstring, he could be ready to return in two weeks.
However, if the scan shows he has torn the muscle, he is likely to be out for four to six weeks.
