Canada announces roster for Iceland friendly

Canada’s men’s national team announced their roster today for their international friendly with Iceland. The Canucks will travel to Reykjavik this week for their first-ever meeting with Iceland on 22 August. Newly-appointed national coach Dale Mitchell has selected 17 players for this first trip with the senior team.

As this particular international friendly match is in Iceland, Canada will be taking a roster featuring European-based players. Ten of the 17 players recently represented Canada at the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Paul Stalteri (59 senior caps) and Richard Hastings (43) are the most experienced players on the squad. Asmir Begovic and Nik Ledgerwood, both two-time members of past FIFA U-20 World Cup teams, are the least experienced players as each have yet to win their first senior cap.

'You can see by looking at the squad that it is a European-based squad,' said Mitchell. 'It is a midweek game in Europe, so it is an ideal time to get the majority of our European-based players together. We’ll look to incorporate our North American-based players in our match against Costa Rica (at home in Toronto on 12 September).'

This will be the first international match between Canada and Iceland. It is also Mitchell’s first match as senior head coach and Canada’s first match since the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Canada is currently ranked fourth amongst CONCACAF countries in the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Rankings with 562 points, just five back of third-place Costa Rica. Canada will face Costa Rica next in Mitchell’s first domestic match as senior head coach on 12 September in Toronto.

Canada looks to European-based talent

By NEIL DAVIDSON

(CP) - Spurs fullback Paul Stalteri will captain a European-based squad in Iceland on Aug. 22 as Dale Mitchell makes his debut as coach of the Canadian senior soccer side.

Canada, ranked 52nd in the world, will take on No. 109 Iceland in Reykjavik in the first meeting between the two countries.

Ten of the 17 players summoned were part of the Canadian team that reached the semifinals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup in June.

With the Iceland game a midweek fixture, Mitchell said he elected not to take North American-based players away from their teams. But he plans to bring them back into the fold for a Sept. 12 friendly against Costa Rica in Toronto.

His decision allows him to delay a potential clash with Toronto FC coach Mo Johnston, who is still unhappy about the treatment of goalkeeper Greg Sutton. The Canadian No. 1 has been sidelined since suffering a concussion in training with Canada at the Gold Cup in early June.

But with Sutton and defender Jim Brennan currently hurting, Mitchell may not have asked Johnston for much even if he had included North American-based talent.

Mitchell said he has not talked to Johnston. As for the Toronto coach's complaint that the national team did not carry a doctor on the road, the Canadian coach called it "a fairly complex issue."

Mitchell said the national team tries to have a local doctor on hand in countries it visits. "And that will certainly be the case in a country like Iceland because we know that we will get good care over there.

"Perhaps it's not ideal, but I think that we're doing everything we can to make sure the players are well-looked after and that will be how we continue into the future."

Four players were invited but were unavailable for the Iceland trip: goalkeeper Josh Wagenaar (ADO Den Haag, Netherlands) is injured while defender Kevin McKenna (FC Koln, Germany) and midfielders Marcel de Jong (PSV, Netherlands) and Tam Nsaliwa (Palonius, Greece) were all kept at home by their clubs.

With McKenna unavailable, Stalteri will continue as captain as he earns his 60th cap for his country.

That will move the 29-year-old past Carlo Corazzin into sole possession of eighth place on the Canadian caps list, just one behind Colin Miller and Mike Sweeney.

Mitchell did invite veteran striker Tomasz Radzinski, despite the fact that the 33-year-old is without a team after parting ways with Fulham.

"Based on what I saw last year both when he was playing for Fulham and also when he was involved with the national team, he still has a lot to offer," Mitchell said in a conference call. "That's our reason for continuing to include Tomasz."

Mitchell has called up two uncapped players: goalkeeper Asmir Begovic (Portsmouth, England) and midfielder Nik Ledgerwood (1860 Munich, Germany),

Begovic was the starting goalie for Mitchell's under-20 side, which went 0-3-0 and failed to score a goal at the recent FIFA U-230 World Cup. He will likely back up former Canadian No. 1 Lars Hirschfeld in Iceland.

In choosing his first senior squad, Mitchell reckoned he had 20-plus European-based players and 10-15 North American-based players to choose from.

Iceland is currently at an all-time low in the rankings. But its average since FIFA started its rating system in 1993 is actually higher than Canada's, No. 63 compared to No. 73.

Iceland currently stands sixth in Group F qualifying for Euro 2008 with a 1-5-1 record. While they were only beaten by 1-0 by Spain, they recently tied tiny Liechtenstein 1-1 and were thumped 5-0 by group leader Sweden.

Iceland's lone win was a 3-0 decision over Northern Ireland.

"You go through their roster and a lot of their players that are playing in Europe are playing at a similar level to a lot of our players," Mitchell said.

The big name is striker Eidur Gudjohnsen, a former Chelsea player who is expected to be on the move soon from FC Barcelona.

The Icelandic team will be tough on broadcasters. All 33 members of the Iceland lineup listed on UEFA's website have names ending in -son or -sen.

Iceland has a population of about 302,000, slightly less than the Windsor, Ont., region according to the 2006 census.

Mitchell and SH will not work out. Already Mitchell have his boy on the staff and the only reason SH name on the list is not to rock the boat too  early. Trust me on this.

We aren't too concerned about the coaching staff politics, but are more interested in results.

Iceland at home is no pushover for any country, but this is a very strong Canadian squad.  Great to see Lars Hirschfeld in net, as he should be our #1 goalie.

The team that SH had at the Gold Cup should not change much, Canada haven't had a good performace at this level for a long time.

Dale's very talented U-20's didn't score a goal in the WC, SH and Dale ideas will not be the same. You don't mess with success.

Three players added to senior camp in Iceland

Canada’s men’s national team has brought in three new players for their international friendly with Iceland on 22 August. The three new players - Pat Onstad, David Edgar and Rhian Dodds - are replacing injured players that will not make the trip to Reykjavik.

Goaltender Lars Hirschfeld (thumb), midfielder Atiba Hutchinson (sick) and forward Rob Friend (back) are all unavailable for the 22 August match, Canada’s first since the CONCACAF Gold Cup in the United States.

Goaltender Pat Onstad joins the Canadian team from Major League Soccer’s Houston Dynamo. The 39-year old Onstad played four games at the recent CONCACAF Gold Cup, helping Canada reach the semi-final. Onstad has 50 career caps with the senior team, third all-time amongst goaltenders.

Dodds joins the Canadian team from Scottish side Kilmarnock F.C. Dodds has yet to win his first cap with the senior team, although he was part of the men’s team at the 2005 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Edgar, at last, joins the Canadian team from Newcastle United in the English Premier League. The 20-year old defender, who was Canada’s 2006 Youth Player of the Year, is taking part in his first senior camp.

The 22 August friendly against Iceland will be coach Dale Mitchell’s first match with the senior side. With the exception of Onstad, all of the players come from European-based clubs. Canada’s next game - and Mitchell’s first on home soil - is 12 September in Toronto at BMO Field against CONCACAF rival Costa Rica.

Canada and Iceland play to a 1-1 draw in soccer friendly Wednesday

REYKJAVIK, Iceland (CP) - Dale Mitchell had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Iceland in his first game as Canada's men's head soccer coach.

But as far as first impressions go, the new coach deemed his team's performance a success. "It was a tough match, a good test for us, and the guys did well," Mitchell said in a phone interview. "We went down a goal but we had a good reaction to the goal, which was the most pleasing thing."

Olivier Occean scored the tying goal in the 75th minute in the exhibition match on a cold and rainy night at Laugardalsvollur Stadium.

Iceland opened the scoring in the 65th minute but Occean, who came on for Iain Hume in the 60th minute, scored his second career goal with the Canadian senior side to secure the tie in the first meeting between the two teams.

"You're 1-nil down and it's a wet night here in Europe, but the guys showed good resiliency and an ability to bounce back. Overall I was quite pleased with the way everybody went about, not just the game but the three days that I was involved here with the team for the first time," said Mitchell.

"It's definitely something to build on."

Canada, which reached the semifinals at the recent CONCACAF Gold Cup, is 53rd in the FIFA world rankings.

Iceland is currently at an all-time low 117th but its average since FIFA started its rating system in 1993 is actually higher than Canada's, No. 64 compared to No. 73.

Mitchell made three late changes to the lineup due to injuries, including flying in Houston Dynamo goalkeeper Pat Onstad to replace Lars Hirschfeld (thumb injury).

"Pat did well," said Mitchell. "We called him in late, he played Sunday night in Houston, flew all the way over here, and did a good job. You expect that from Pat, because he's an experienced 'keeper and he's a quality guy and always ready to play for Canada."

The trip to Iceland was Mitchell's first chance to work with the European-based players.

"So I get a chance to see everybody up close and personal and kind of put together what they're all about," he said.

Canada's next match is a Sept. 12 friendly against Cost Rica at BMO Field in Toronto.

"Obviously that game is going to be one that we're all looking forward to, being the first game back in Canada for awhile and the first game at BMO, and there's quite a buzz about soccer in Toronto now, so I think the staff and all the players are looking forward to it," Mitchell said.
