CURTAIN RAISER

Real Madrid v Atlético Madrid: Preview
PA

MADRID, August 24 (Primera Liga) - Real Madrid coach Bernd Schuster has decided against calling up new signings Arjen Robben and Gabriel Heinze for Saturday's Primera Liga curtain-raiser against Atletico Madrid.

The duo, who only joined on Thursday and have been short of match practice recently, were left out of a 20-man squad for the mouth-watering clash at the Bernabeu where Real will begin the defence of their title.

Schuster explained his decision to keep former Chelsea winger Robben and ex-Manchester United defender Heinze in the wings: ``They arrived at the last minute and they haven't worked out properly in the pre-season, so we've devised a specific plan to get them in optimum form as soon as possible.''

Heinze and Robben were two of eight summer signings at Real, and the other six - Christoph Metzelder, Pepe, Javier Saviola, Jerzy Dudek, Royston Drenthe and Wesley Sneijder - have all been summoned for Saturday's clash.

With so many new arrivals to bed in, including a new coach in Schuster, no-one can be sure just how Real will perform against Atletico.

Certainly, pre-season results have suggested Real might need more time to click, with the team having lost six of their 10 matches, including a 6-3 aggregate defeat to Sevilla in the Spanish Super Cup.

Despite that, Schuster believes the mood in the camp is good.

``They've recovered well from the game with Sevilla. Playing for their national teams has helped them. That boosts your morale. They were all rather jolly when they arrived yesterday,'' the coach said.

``I'm happy with the squad I have. One always wants to improve on what he has, no matter how good that is. I think we will be able to play at an optimum level in every competition.''

Atletico, who finished a disappointing seventh last campaign after investing heavily during the close season, have also been busy in the transfer market again.

They may have lost captain and star striker Fernando Torres to Liverpool, but coach Javier Aguirre looks to have much more strength in depth this time around following the arrivals of players such as Diego Forlan, Simao Sabrosa, Luis Garcia, Raul Garcia and former Real man Jose Antonio Reyes.

Schuster admits it is likely to be a testing evening for his side.

``I think their forwards Simao, Maxi, Forlan and Aguero are their most dangerous men.

``They also have an excellent midfield. Maniche is very good in attack, like Deco, and he has a great finishing touch. They also have five good defenders. We will have to prevent the ball from reaching the forwards quickly.''

Aguirre, whose job looked to be under threat towards the end of last season but has since penned a one-year extension to his contract with Atletico, is looking forward to getting the new campaign under way.

``We are eager for the league to start and what better opponent to do it against than Real Madrid,'' he said.

``Last year we had a good game against Real Madrid (drew 1-1), but we committed an error which meant we had to settle for a draw.

``We are not worse than them, we are going to battle and fight. We do not feel inferior.''

Reyes, who scored twice on the final day of the season last year to help Real win the title, is confident he will be the one celebrating come the end of Saturday's game.

``Atletico will win 2-0 and I will score a goal,'' the winger predicted. ``I hope to be able to score a goal in the Bernabeu.''

YES boys and girls, the wait is over the big league finally starting most of the games are being played on sunday but the curtain raiser match will be ah nice one. i expecting real madrid 2 start off as slow as manu, the club hasnt look to have settled down yet.( ok maybe is cause i am  a barca fan ::) )

Opening game ever closer

Berta Brau/Miriam Nadal

Barça continue preparations for the opening game of the season. Rijkaard’s men began training at 10:00am this morning at the Masia with 20 of the first team squad and two extra, Crosas and Olmo.

20 Players of the squad, along with Crosas and Olmo, began training today at 10:00am. The players trained under the orders of the physical and technical trainers in order to be firing on all cylinders come match day. The only player missing from the session was Icelandic midfielder Eidur Gudjohnsen, who is recovering from injury.

Standard exercises for Sunday

WEB_10.jpgThe squad followed the standard training plan Friday morning. They started with a warm up, did ball control exercises, sprints and circuits using obstacles on the pitch.

The team did a variety of movements and actions covering the span of the pitch at the Masia in order to carry out some speed training. The first circuit involved keeping hold of the ball while passing and changing positions. Every player took part in this exercise less the goalkeepers, who practised aside with Juan Carlos Unzue.

The second circuit, the objective was finishing, which involved testing the keepers, Valdes and Jorquera.

Finishing touches

Rijkaard was seen very involved during the circuits. The Dutch coach met with the squad on a number of occasions in order to iron out any problems he observed during the session.

Once the physical exercises were completed, the squad split into two to contest the habitual game to finish off the session. The yellows were Valdés, Eto’o, Ronaldinho, Milito, Xavi, Giovani, Marc Crosas, Abidal, Touré and Thuram; the blues Jorquera, Messi, Henry, Motta, Ezquerro, Márquez, Deco, Iniesta, Zambrotta, Sylvinho and Oleguer. During the game, the trainers wanted the teams to work particularly on putting on the pressure and to work hard down the wings.

The greatest single cause of atheism in the world today are Christians who acknowledge Jesus ;with their lips and walk out the door and deny Him by their lifestyle. That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable.

So because if a frigging broadcasting dispute no one can see a goddamn La Liga game unless they're in forking Spain! So that means allyuh Barca fans have to miss out too. From the little radio commentary it's a really, reallly, really good match, but Madrid being superior but a lot of near-goals.
Giles Tremlett in Madrid
Thursday August 23, 2007
The Guardian

Spanish football fans were yesterday left panicking about whether they would get televised games this season after the owners of the league rights said they had cut off the feed to a major broadcaster.

With the league season kicking off this weekend, Spanish fans had been looking forward to returning to their sofas - or their favourite seat in the bar - to watch the stars of La Liga return to action.

Article continues
But the chances of seeing the likes of Barcelona stars Ronaldinho and Thierry Henry or Real Madrid's Raúl and Robinho, are now being threatened by a dispute between the owners of the rights and the production company that distributes the matches.

The former has cut off its service to the distributor, claiming that it is owed €58m (£40m) from last season. In the complex world of televised Spanish football, that kills off the free-to-air matches shown every weekend by national television station La Sexta.

The row, sparked in part by a titanic struggle for control over television rights in future seasons, also threatens to disrupt pay-TV matches.

One of La Sexta's major shareholders is the Mediapro production company, which is said to owe the money.

Mediapro has snapped up the league television rights for all but three of the top clubs for the season starting in 2009.

The company that owns the rights, a subsidiary of the Prisa media giant, claims it is protecting all parties, including the clubs and fans, by cutting the signal to La Sexta so that it cannot show this weekend's game between Sevilla and Getafe. Mediapro is crying foul and claiming that pay-TV matches will also be affected.

"The grave and unilateral decision ... is going to signal a drastic and substantial reduction of matches that will be broadcast by pay-TV," it said.

That-game-was-wickeeeeeeeeed! Couldn't have had a more excitig start to the season. Real play real nice football, sweet passes, sweet set-ups, real close calls. Drenthe reaaal handle the defence, Robinho and Ramos reaaaaal handle the right flank, when Robben come in on the left it go be pressure from both sides. Sneijder (sp) did well from what I saw of him and he scored the second goal. Free kick set up from Guti and Sneijder (sp) slotted it in low left corner. All in all, a very entertaining match and I hope they sort out those braodcasting rights soon so ah could see Barca flop!

Yes they do have a nice squad.  I like the signing of the young argentinian goalkeeper, Oscar Ustari. (ah cyah STANNIM......but) he's an excellent young goalkeeper and I look forward to seeing him handle the challenges of top flight european football.

MADRID, August 25 (Primera Liga) - Real Madrid began the defence of their Primera Liga title with a deserved come-from-behind victory over city rivals Atletico Madrid at the Bernabeu on Saturday.

The tone was set for an enthralling match when Atletico took the lead inside the opening minute through Sergio Aguero, but Real hit back to take the points through goals from Raul and Wesley Sneijder.

Real kicked off with just three of their eight summer signings in their starting line-up - Dutch duo Royston Drenthe and Sneijder, plus Brazilian centre-back Pepe.

Atletico also had three new faces on show at the outset, with Diego Forlan, Raul Garcia and Simao Sabrosa all making their league debuts for the Rojiblancos.

It was the men in red and white who were quickest into their stride though, taking less than a minute to score the first goal of the match and of the Primera Liga season.

A corner from Mariano Pernia on the right was flicked on at the near post and the unmarked Aguero had the simplest task to nod home at the far post and put Atletico 1-0 up.

That was exactly what Real and their new coach Bernd Schuster would have been desperate to avoid, but it was not to prove critical as the hosts were back on level terms inside 15 minutes.

Real had already gone close a minute earlier through Robinho, who was denied by a good save from Leo Franco, when Sergio Ramos sent over a brilliant cross that was clinically headed home by captain Raul.

That goal seemed to settle Real down and they enjoyed the better of the chances in the remainder of the half.

Robinho fired over from a Ramos cross, before Ramos himself was unfortunate to see his header from Sneijder's corner strike the foot of the post before being hacked behind by the Atletico defence.

Then, from the resulting corner, Leo Franco's punch fell to Sneijder 30 yards out and his first-time left-footed volley only just went wide.

Ruud van Nistelrooy - last season's leading scorer in La Liga - then blazed over for Real while Mahamadou Diarra smashed a great opening wide of the far post just before half-time.

Atletico were not without their chances either, and Maxi Rodriguez, Pernia and Forlan all had sights of goal without being able to take advantage.

The start of the second half continued where the first left off, with both sides looking to attack at every opportunity in what was a hugely entertaining and open derby.

Atletico duo Maniche and Pernia both saw low shots saved by Iker Casillas in the first 10 minutes, while at the other end Sneijder kept trying his luck from distance.

Guti went closer than all of them in the 66th minute when his curling free-kick from the edge of the box struck the underside of the crossbar before bouncing back out.

Van Nistelrooy was just unable to turn home the rebound, and not long after the Dutch striker was denied by Leo Franco when one-on-one as Real started to turn up the heat.

The hosts finally got the breakthrough they were threatening 11 minutes from time through Sneijder.

Having won a free-kick in a position not dissimilar to the one where Guti struck the crossbar, it looked a sure thing that the Real playmaker would try his luck again.

But instead he rolled the ball across the face of the area where Sneijder's 25-yard strike flew into the bottom corner of Leo Franco's net via a slight deflection, sending the Bernabeu wild.

Real's joy appeared to be short-lived as Atletico promptly went down the other end and put the ball in the back of the net, but Diego Forlan's header was ruled out for an offside flag.

Atletico were to have one more chance to snatch a point, with Aguero finding himself clean-through in injury-time after a clever one-two with Forlan on the edge of the Real area.

But the Argentinian youngster's attempted lob over the out-rushing Casillas was blocked by the Real goalkeeper and the champions were able to hold on for the points.
