but what really going on here

Luton didn't collect 5 from Sunderland last season to ensure their demotion to League One? Unless Roy playing a B-side for this Carling Cup

This would normally be no big deal because every year many PL teams play 3rd string players and get booted by lower level teams in the Carling CUp.  But when you are not a challenger for the league cup or title, I think that Roy Keane should have played a better team to at least move further up in the competetion and not get embarrassed by a Luton Town team they owned.
Never, never, ever give up! Go T&T Warriors!

Problem with Sunderland is how thin the squad is.

Check this out. This is basically the setup

First string

1. Craig Gordon,
5. Nyron Nosworthy, 6. Paul MacShane, 2. Greg Halford,  33. Ross Wallace,
4. Dickson Etuhu, 7. Carlos Edwards (out until September 15), 8. Dean Whitehead (out until October 1), 10. Kieran Richardson (injured), 18. Grant Leadbitter,
9. Anthony Stokes, 11. Darryl Murphy, 16. Michael Chopra,

Second string
13. Darren Ward,
15. Danny Collins, 21. Russell Anderson
12. Liam Miller,  19. Dwight Yorke,
14. Stern John,  31. David Connolly,

Third string
24. Trevor carson,
27. Stanislav Varga, 29. Peter Hartley,
30. Jake Richardson, 28. Graham Kavanagh,
23. Roy O' Donovan, 20. Andrew Cole

Staring line up against Luton.
13 Ward
02 Halford
33 Wallace
05 Nosworthy
21 Anderson
12 Miller
18 Leadbitter
04 Etuhu  (62 O'Donovan )
11 Murphy (62 Connolly  )
16 Chopra
09 Stokes (78 Yorke )

He basically played 8 regular starters. Only Ward, Anderson and Miller can't be considered regular starting material.

Swansea 0-1 Reading: Lita leaves it late
PA

Leroy Lita marked his first start of the season by firing 10-man Reading into the Carling Cup third round in extra-time after a 1-0 win at Swansea.

The England Under-21 striker rewarded fellow front-man Dave Kitson's tireless approach work by nudging home his 105th-minute cross.

It was a crushing blow for League One side Swansea, who took the Royals into extra-time and had by far the better chances.

Their poor finishing though failed to make Reading pay, notably after the Royals' Nigerian defender Sam Sodje was sent off after 58 minutes.

Referee Kevin Friend brandished a second yellow card for a foul by Sodje, although his team-mates and the Reading coaching staff hotly contested it.

Swansea, with substitute Leon Britton an increasing threat down to the right side, looked to capitalise while Reading regrouped, yet it wasn't to be.

Angel Rangel and Paul Anderson both missed great chances for the Swans - Anderson hit the bar with eight minutes left - while substitute Jason Scotland proved a handful with his power and determination.

But Reading admirably withheld the Swansea siege, brilliantly led by skipper James Harper, whose leadership and stamina set a stirring example.

Lita too, ran himself into the ground, and Swansea were ultimately denied the victory they cherished in front of more than 12,000 at the Liberty Stadium.

Why was Scotland only a sub?

Sometimes you have to wonder what priority teams does give to these cup competitions, especially the Carling Cup. All kinda team does be playing they second string; Fulham barely let Keller get off the plane to play him last week and they let Warner play this match, but Coventry couldn't even be bothered to put Me Mum on the bench...

I stop trying to understand eh...
