Platini slams foreign owners

Uefa president outburst at Premier League
Platini: Scathing attack
Michael Platini has launched a surprising attack on the foreign ownership of English football clubs.

Platini, the president of Uefa, has revealed his dislike for the increasing foreign investment in the Premier League.

Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool and Aston Villa are among a number of top flight clubs who have been taken over by owners from abroad and Platini insists that something must be done.

"I can't understand how so many English clubs are owned by foreign people," Platini told Sky Sports News.

Identity

"I think we can do something. I don't know why Americans come to buy some clubs. You need your identity.

"I can't understand why some English clubs are owned by Americans because they do not come for the beauty of the game, for the romance of the football in England.

"They come because they want to make money. We need to defend that.

"If you have Manchester against Liverpool it is part of the population of the cities.

"But now if you have an owner from America against an owner from Russia, I don't like it."

Agree with him in principle. Free market system must take precedence...but clearly it have a new breed of mercenary ownership infiltrating the Premiership.

what is going to be interesting, is to see what will happen when some of these foreign owned teams get relegated, and stop making all that money from the tv rights in the epl..

then those foreign owners become disinterested and jump ship and leave dem clubs in ruin...

what dey go say then?

dais why they buying only better sides...yuh doh really see Chelsea, Men Utd, Villa or Liverpool getting relegated anytime soon. Thus the money go keep flowing

I personally doh see the big issue...it really and truly is the almighty dollar at the end of the day. Football is one of the world's biggest businesses, men behind the scenes gettin paid, any romantic idealistic notions left remain with only the fans and dem one-club players

besides nobody stopping de Englishman from buying up an MLS side

An Icelandic man owns West Ham, a Thai owns Man City, a russian owns Portsmouth, an American owns Aston Villa...

I doubt you would call these "better" sides, and you would agree that one bad season could see any of them fall down in the championship .

That is the sentiment of a lot of people. But as long as there is free trade with open markets, there is little they can do. Remmember most of investors bring in finance, so the club directors would not pass up the financial opportunities. If Abramovich had  put money in Manu or 'Pool, the staus quo would continue and most people would not complain. Let the market prevail. If they can't make in Div 1, they will sink to Div2 , Div 3 or conference.
