Jones Joy
By: Soccernet.com.

Sunderland marked the passing of FA Cup hero Ian Porterfield in fitting style to end a run of four defeats with a confident 2-1 victory over Reading.
Eyebrows were raised when manager Roy Keane paid Southampton £6million for striker Kenwyne Jones, but he capped a fine home debut with a superb 29th-minute strike to set his side on their way, and then provided the cross from which Ross Wallace made it 2-0 two minutes after the break.
The margin of victory would have been more comfortable had either Jones or Wallace made the most of gilt-edged chances which came their way either side of half-time.
However, after going four games without a single goal, two were more than enough to kill off a poor Royals side on the day despite Dave Kitson's late consolation effort.
In the run-up to the game, Keane had insisted the best possible tribute his players could pay to Porterfield would be to secure three points, and they set about their task with relish.
The loss of wide men Kieran Richardson and Carlos Edwards through injury had robbed the Irishman of two of his most creative forces, but the men he selected to plug the gaps proved more than capable as Sunderland dominated the first half.
Local boy Grant Leadbitter lined up on the right, while Wallace added the width on the left and both were to be heavily involved.
Indeed, much of the Black Cats' better play was channelled through Leadbitter and it was he who forced a fine 13th-minute save from keeper Marcus Hahnemann with a swerving right-foot volley after Danny Higginbotham's cross had been only half-cleared.
However, if it was Leadbitter calling the shots in midfield, Jones was making a big impression ahead of him as he made life intensely difficult for Ivar Ingimarsson and Andre Bikey at the heart of the Reading defence.
He had already drilled in a long-range effort which caused Hahnemann some discomfort when he opened his Sunderland account with a superb 29th-minute strike.
Leadbitter was the architect as he served the ball up on the edge of the area for the former Saints hitman to smash a left-foot shot past the keeper and into the bottom corner.
Jones might have doubled his tally with a header which he directed just wide two minutes later, but should have done four minutes before the break.
Wallace twisted and turned his way into space on the left to pick out Jones at the far post, but with the goal at his mercy, he headed firmly into the ground and saw the ball rear up and over the bar.
Reading created little of any note during the opening 45 minutes, but were almost handed a way back into the game in injury time when Kitson just failed to get on the end of Andre Bikey's header back across goal.
Jones took little time to atone for his earlier miss when, less than two minutes after the restart, he danced into space on the right before drilling in a cross which eluded Michael Chopra, but arrived at Wallace's feet with perfect timing for the Scot to make it 2-0.
Wallace, who was twice booked for removing his shirt after scoring last season, risked the wrath of his manager for doing exactly the same once again.
However, Keane had more pressing concerns on 53 minutes when the Royals finally started to cause problems inside the home penalty area, debutant Leroy Rosenior and Stephen Hunt both having shots blocked in a real melee.
But Hahnemann continued to see more of the ball than he would have liked, and was a relieved man to see Chopra's right-foot shot fly past the post six minutes later.
The Reading keeper handed Wallace a glorious opportunity to collect his second goal of the afternoon on 61 minutes when he could only deflect another Jones cross to his feet, but Graeme Murty got in a vital block to keep his side's fading hopes alive.
The former Celtic midfielder was replaced by Anthony Stokes three minutes later and the Irishman might have cemented the victory instantly, only to shoot straight at Hahnemann after being picked out by Chopra.
Kitson saw an 80th-minute shot deflected over the bar as Reading sought consolation and that duly arrived five minutes later when he glanced home a Nicky Shorey cross to set up an anxious conclusion for the home side.

Sunderland 2-1 Reading
By: Jonathan Stevenson  (BBC Sport)

Sunderland's £6m striker Kenwyne Jones inspired his side to victory against Reading on a moving day for the Black Cats at the Stadium of Light.
Prior to kick off they paid their respects to 1973 FA Cup-winning scorer Ian Porterfield, who died on Tuesday.
Jones opened the scoring with his first Sunderland goal, a brilliant turn and sizzling finish from 25 yards out.
He laid on a second for Ross Wallace to slot home, before Dave Kitson headed home a late consolation for Reading.
It was an emotionally-charged afternoon on Wearside, as Sunderland bade farewell to one of their favourite sons.
Commentary of Porterfield's goal from the 1-0 win over Leeds was played over the tannoy system prior to kick off, followed by a rapturous minute's applause from the 39,272 present.
Once the game got under way, it seemed Sunderland were keen to honour the memory of a man who also managed Reading for 20 months until February 1991.
The visitors had more possession but Sunderland created two early chances, first Jones and then Grant Leadbitter with a 20-yard dipping volley both forcing Marcus Hahnemann to save.
Roy Keane's outlay of £6m on Jones - unproven at Premier League level - had raised eyebrows in some quarters.
Jones celebrates his first Sunderland goal in some style
But just before the half-hour mark, the giant Trinidadian began to repay his fee by collecting the ball 25 yards out, turning smartly, shrugging off Ivar Ingimarsson and rifling a left-foot thunderbolt inside Hahnemann's left-hand post.
Jones could have had a hat-trick before half-time, nodding one Danny Collins centre wide and then, remarkably, heading a fine Wallace cross into the ground and over the bar from five yards.
After a bright opening Reading had faded badly and less than 90 seconds into the second half they were even more up against it.
Jones somehow wriggled through three challenges and escaped down the right, his cross evading Michael Chopra but rolling perfectly for Wallace to sidefoot home.
Reading summoned a reply, Liam Rosenior claiming Wallace handled his shot in the area, before, at the other end, Graeme Murty had to be alert to clear another goalbound Wallace effort.
Without an away goal or a second-half strike to their name all season, Reading at the moment look a million miles away from the team that won so many new admirers last term.
They looked toothless up front until Bobby Convey came on, the American winger seeing his cross-shot just evade Kitson and the far post.
Reading finally got on the scoresheet five minutes from time when Kitson glanced in Nicky Shorey's free-kick, but it would have been undeniably harsh on Sunderland had Keane's men not taken all three points.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunderland boss Roy Keane on a difficult day:
"The players were fantastic and the fans were all day. It was quite emotional before the game and it was a great tribute to a top player.
"It was a good display. The last few minutes were nervous due to a sloppy goal, but we should have been 4-0 up.
"Kenwyne Jones was different class. They just could not handle him today."

Reading manager Steve Coppell:
"We must react positively and get some more points on the board.
"We're in basically in a situation where we need to improve. We've leaked too many and haven't scored enough.
"Kenwyne Jones was a physical and skilful presence for them, he scored one and was involved in a lot for them. But we didn't defend him very well."

Roy Keane's Press Release

It was a fitting tribute, it finished the day off nicely.

It was a great tribute before the game, and during the game.

The players stayed focused and it was a nice way to finish the day off. I thought it was brilliant - and the Reading fans played their part. That round of applause during the game was very, very good, I have to say.

It was a good home debut for Kenwyne. I thought he did well a couple of weeks ago, it was tough for him being on his own up front [at Manchester United], today he gave us something different.

He worked very well with Chops, it was a very good debut. Kenwyne is still a young lad and we're not expecting miracles but it's nice that he's off the mark.

I'm sure the fans enjoyed his performance today but we can't expect too much too soon, he's a young player.

I look at all the players and I thought they all gave their lot today, that's all I ever ask, it's pleasing.

The performances at Luton and Wigan were nowhere near what we hoped for, but against Birmingham, Tottenham, Liverpool and United, I didn't think it was that bad.

The peformance was important today, the players showed that confidence and belief.

I've said before, I believe it takes seven or eight games before teams are up and running. We've a lot of new players, we've injuries, so we shouldn't expect too much, too soon.

You have to be patient. Most football fans are not patient and I haven't been that patient in the past, but I have to learn to be.

I have said before that the best way of paying your respects is winning a football match and hopefully he [Ian] will have been looking down, enjoying it.

It's hard when a player is celebrating and he is enjoying it, but Ross [Wallace] did it twice last year and he was sent off for one of them. I can't be too angry because we won the game and we scored .. and he did well but he'll learn.

SILVIO MAKES WREXHAM DEBUT IN LOSS

Source: Soccernet.com

Wrexham 0-1 Rotherham

Wrexham remain rooted to the bottom of the Football League as Rotherham snatched a late 1-0 win at the Racecourse.

Substitute Chris O'Grady scored the only goal in the 78th minute to consign Wrexham to their fourth defeat of the season.

It was a match of poor quality but the home side forced the issue in the opening period with Matt Done looking lively.

Eifion Williams saw a cross just headed away by Stephen Brogan on 27 minutes but as the half came to a close Rotherham upped the tempo.

Marcus Bean shot into Anthony Williams' hands before Andy Todd and on-loan Doncaster striker Bruce Dyer went close.

But the best chance of the first half came when a great cross from Dyer was headed against the post by Derek Holmes from close range.

Brian Carey shook things up by bringing on sub Silvio Spann and Chris Llewellyn and the two immediately combined for the latter to test Andy Warrington on 73 minutes.

But just five minutes later the breakthrough came when Todd sprung the offside trap and crossed for sub O'Grady to net.

And despite a late free kick from Spann which was tipped over by Warrington and Bean clearing off the line from Neil Roberts, the home side couldn't grab an equaliser.

LATAPY SHINES IN FALKIRK DRAW

Source: Soccernet.com

Falkirk 1-1 Hibernian

Referee Willie Collum sent three players off as Falkirk and Hibernian fought out a 1-1 draw in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League.

Clayton Donaldson gave the visitors a fourth-minute lead from the penalty spot and was booked for his celebrations, before being dismissed prior to the break after being shown a second yellow card for a tackle on Steven Thomson.

The Bairns equalised in the 47th minute through Pedro Moutinho but lost their numerical advantage when Darren Barr was shown a second yellow for dissent.

With just seconds remaining, Falkirk midfielder Patrick Cregg was ordered off for a late tackle on Thierry Gathuessi.

Hibernian took the lead courtesy of Donaldson after the former York player was himself fouled in the box.

Lewis Stevenson found the striker on the wing and he used his pace to great effect to edge past Jack Ross.

As he entered the box, Barr attempted to cut out the danger, but his late tackle felled Donaldson and referee Collum pointed to the spot, with Donaldson converting successfully.

The hosts pressed after going a goal down and Graham Barrett unleashed a long-range effort which went well wide of the target.

Barrett then broke the offside trap in the 13th minute and went one-on-one with goalkeeper Yves Ma-Kalambay.

However, the former Chelsea reserve came out on top, blocking Barrett's shot from an acute angle.

Falkirk looked to midfield maestro Russell Latapy to engineer an opening and the former Trinidad and Tobago international came close to a superb solo goal.

The veteran rode several challenges as he tried to create space on the periphery of the box, but his shot was well blocked.

Hibernian then worked a short corner eight minutes before the break and David Murphy was given room to shoot from 18 yards, but his deflected effort went just wide.

The Easter Road club were dealt a blow when they were reduced to 10 men in the 39th minute when Donaldson was given his marching orders.

And their hopes of clinging to the narrow lead were dashed two minutes after the restart when Moutinho scored.

The ball found its way through to substitute Gerard Aafjes, who had replaced Ross, on the wing.

Aafjes crossed for Moutinho whose first-time effort was blocked by Rob Jones in the six-yard box, but the Portuguese frontman met the rebound and lashed the ball past Ma-Kalambay from close range.

Falkirk were not content with just an equaliser and went searching for a winner, Barrett rifling a left-footed shot over the bar in the 50th minute.

But they too were reduced to 10 men when Barr was dealt his second booking for thumping the ball to the ground in anger at not winning a throw in his side's favour.

There was further indiscipline amongst the players as Cregg and Gathuessi were booked for squaring up in a row which saw the latter shove the Falkirk player.

With neither side having a numerical advantage, the outcome of the match was far from certain as the game opened up.

Hibernian substitute Steven Fletcher saw a header saved brilliantly by Tim Krul and, as the Bairns failed to clear their lines, the same player lashed a shot just wide.

David Murphy attempted to win the game for the visitors with a marauding run which finally ended with the left-back blasting a left-footed effort wide from the edge of the box.

Collum was not finished with his cautions, brandishing a second yellow card to Cregg for a challenge on Gathuessi in the closing stages.

Cregg's first booking had come just after the hour mark for a foul on the same player.

went to the game and watched Sammy good...he is definitely one of the best players there in terms of smarts and skills. I think he had about four shots on goal but they weren't going in for him at all at all...and he get robbed a penalty too. But is not like he playing kaka...I guess when Cunningham get back to full fitness we will see how they play together...cause Lombardo is toots

Findley came on as a sub but could not do much as TFC were pressing for a goal esp with RSL a man down

0-0 draw yet again for TFC...
