ROTTERDAM, September 16 (Eredivisie) - AZ Alkmaar had to dig deep to recover from two goals down and snatch a point against Sparta Rotterdam on Sunday.
The hosts led 2-0 after 51 minutes thanks to a Haris Medunjanin own goal and a Nourdin Boukhari effort.
But AZ hit back to take a point from their trip to Sparta Stadion with goals from Julian Jenner and Mounir El Hamdaoui.
The hosts began brightly and with just three minutes on the clock Boukhari had the first sighter from just inside the AZ box that was comfortably saved by Boy Waterman.
And Sparta's early pressure soon told when they went ahead after six minutes.
Maarten Martens' corner kick looked innocuous enough as it floated into the AZ penalty area, but Medunjanin got his clearing header all wrong and put through his own net.
Ari Ferreira looked to hand AZ a route back into the match with a run and shot after 25 minutes, but Sander Westerveld in the Sparta goal was equal to the effort.
A much livelier second period saw Sparta quickly extend their lead.
Six minutes after the restart, Daryl Roberts centred from the right wing and Boukhari was on hand to fire home with a powerful strike that left Waterman helpless.
However, AZ were not done yet, and midway through the half they pulled one back.
Jenner scored the goal from close range after Martens' free-kick was not cleared to safety by the static Sparta backline.
And in the 77th minute the fightback was complete as El Hamdaoui scored for AZ after the impressive Martens had again delivered an inviting cross, this time from a surging run down the left wing.
