tampaspartans.athleticsite.com

Clevon George scored two goals, including the game-winner in extra time Sunday to lead the University of Tampa Spartans (5-1, 1-0) to a 3-2 victory over Florida Tech (1-5-1, 0-1). The win marks the fourth consecutive win for the Spartans and their first in Sunshine State Conference play this season.

The Spartans took the lead early in the match as Kevin Sierra headed home a cross from George in the 5th minute to give Tampa a 1-0 lead. George added a goal of his own in the 13th minute to give the Spartans a quick 2-0 lead in the match. The Panthers of Florida Tech found the back of the net in the 41st minute to narrow the Spartan lead to 2-1 after Ryan Hagerty scored off a corner kick from Tyson Eyo. Florida Tech scored again in the 73rd minute when Nicholas Garcia beat the Tampa keeper on a breakaway to put the Panthers back on terms with the Spartans at 2-2. The match stayed 2-2 into extra time until George clinched the Spartans’ fourth straight win in the 104th minute, scoring his second goal of the match, both unassisted.  The senior striker was involved on all the Spartan goals in the match, scoring two and assisting on Sierra’s 5th minute score. Kevin St. John went the distance for the Spartans in net, allowing two goals and making three saves for his fifth win of the season. The Spartans return to the pitch on Friday as they travel to Lake Wales to square off against the Royals of Warner Southern. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 pm.

Kyle Hall's double shuts Out Fordham
suathletics.com

Junior forward Kyle Hall (Toronto, Ontario) tied his career high with two goals and sophomore Hansen Woodruff (Stuart, Fla.) added his team-leading fourth goal of the year to power the Orange men’s soccer team to a 3-0 shutout of Fordham (1-4-0) in its home opener on Sunday, Sept. 16. The victory extends Syracuse’s unbeaten streak to seven games dating back last season, the longest such streak under head coach Dean Foti. The Orange (3-0-3) used an early second-half surge to put the game out of reach. Already ahead, 1-0, Woodruff found Hall’s feet with a pass to the right side of the box, and Hall launched a low drive to the lower left corner of the net past Fordham keeper Dan Hajducky 4:05 into the second period. Less than two minutes later, Woodruff finished off a pass from sophomore Tom Perevegyencev (Budapest, Hungary) to seal the victory at the 50:34 mark. “We talk about scoring goals at critical times,” Foti said after the match. “Two of those times are at the start of the game and at the start of the second half. By getting goals when we did, I think we put them (Fordham) back on their heels.”

SU’s three goals were more than enough for its defense, which held the Rams’ leading scorer Dean Stanic to one shot in the contest. Fordham generated one good scoring chance early in the game. The rest of the Rams’ 10 shots were no trouble for SU junior goalkeeper Robert Cavicchia (North York, Ontario), who finished with six saves. Cavicchia’s six stops elevated him into a tie with Mike Westcott for seventh on the Orange’s career saves list (174). It was also Cavicchia’s 11th career shutout, moving him into a tie with Josh McGibbon for seventh on that career ledger. Sunday’s match was the second-career, multi-goal game for Hall, who had the Orange’s first goal against the Rams in the 17th minute. Hall also scored twice against Loyola in 2006. Woodruff finished the game with three points (1g, 1a) and his goal increased his career total to 11. He is SU’s active leading goal scorer. Hajducky fell to 0-3-0 on the season with the loss. He made three saves in the contest for the Rams before being replaced by Jon Bratincevic in the 66th minute. Two Orange players had career firsts in Sunday’s win. Redshirt freshman Geoff Lytle (Miami Beach, Fla.) saw the first action of his collegiate career. Lytle replaced Woodruff midway through the second half and played the remainder of the match. Perevegyencev’s assist on SU’s final score was the first of his career. Syracuse continues its homestand on Friday, Sept. 21. The Orange hosts Pittsburgh in its BIG EAST opener at 7:00 p.m.

Sandy's Late Goal Not Enough for Falcon Victory
bgsufalcons.cstv.com

After trailing 1-0 for a small portion of Sunday afternoon's match, senior Abiola Sandy sunk the equalizing goal in the 76th minute for Bowling Green State University (2-3-1), but the Falcons were unable to overcome visiting Canisius College (1-3-0) in the final match of the 2007 Falcon Invitational. Canisius' Alan McGreal scored his second goal of the afternoon in the 96th minute, earning the Griffins Sunday's sudden death overtime victory, 2-1.

"College soccer games are played in moments, unfortunately we lost a moment of the match and it resulted in the loss of the match," said head coach Fred Thompson. "This was a great game because it was competitive from the start. To their credit, Canisius did a good job defending, they moved the ball well and had very dangerous players on the field." Entering the match, if the Falcons were to win this weekend's tournament, not only would they need to beat Canisius, the squad would need to pound in at least five goals to match Detroit's 6-1 two-match goal differentiation. It seemed as if BGSU was on their way to chipping away at the lofty Detroit advantage when Ryan Davis converted his own rebound giving the Falcons a 1-0 lead for just a split second. The goal was immediately negated as a result of Davis' offside positioning on Chuko Evwaraye's initial serve into the middle which created the scoring chance. At the conclusion of the first period, each team remained scoreless despite creating numerous scoring chances. Bowling Green went on to outshoot Canisius 21-11 and forced Adam Cately to make five saves in goal. Canisius claimed its first lead at 67:56 when McGreal challenged goalkeeper Paul Shoemaker out of his defensive comfort zone on a breakaway scoring the first Griffins goal of the tournament. The lead was short lived due to Sandy and fellow senior Ryan Perea's execution of a successful give-and-go which evened the score at 1-1 (76:00) with 14:00 still remaining in regulation. The dogfight was then forced to continue into an overtime period.

Bowling Green saw multiple chances to end the sudden death period but it was McGreal's golden goal at 96:31 that propelled Canisius to their first win of the season. The late scoring surge was not unusual for the visiting squad seeing as each of their prior goals this season had been scored in the final 10:00 of regulation play. "For the most part, we moved well and had wonderful possessions that created scoring opportunities. From the sheer numbers of chances we are finding, we need to finish and put the ball in the net," said Thompson. With a perfect 2-0 record, Detroit was crowned champions of the tournament, while Canisius was named the runner-up due to today's head-to-head. BGSU and the University of Central Arkansas followed suit in third and fourth, respectively. "Congratulations to Detroit for the wins this weekend," said Thompson. "They played well and were able to eek out the overtime victory earlier today." Detroit's Christian King was named the tournament MVP with Renato Susnja, Mateusz Szwed, Simon Zahra and Ken Simon earning All-Tournament honors. Canisius' McGreal, Simba Aberdeen and Adam Cately represented the Griffins on the All-Tournament squad, while BGSU's Abiola Sandy and Paul Shoemaker and UCA's Matt Marlin were also recognized. "I am proud of the way both Paul and Abby played this weekend," said Thompson. "Paul was responsible for a few big saves to keep us in games and Abby's partnership with Hunter [Van Houten] in the midfield was outstanding seeing as it is a new position for him." In 206:31, Shoemaker made eight saves and posted a .800 save percentage with a shutout while Sandy translated four shots on goal into two points (2g). The Falcons will next host in-state foe Ohio State on Thursday (Sept. 27) afternoon at 4:00 p.m.

cofcsports.com

The College of Charleston captured the UNCW/Jameson Inn Classic title with a pair of second half goals in a 2-1 win over in-state foe Coastal Carolina on Sunday at the UNCW Soccer Stadium. The Cougars run their record to 6-0 with their sixth straight win to open the season while the Chanticleers drop to 1-4-1 with their second one-goal loss of the weekend. Charleston also claimed its third in-season tournament title with the weekend sweep. The game-winning goal came by way of an own goal in the 89th minute by Coastal Carolina. Charleston sophomore forward Zach Prince, who tied the game earlier in the half, sent a low cross into the goalie box where a CCU defender slid and knocked the ball into the goal.

CofC trailed 1-0 entering the final 16 minutes of the match when Prince drew the Cougars even after converting a rebound at the 74:54 mark following a shot by Kareem Yearwood. Yearwood was named Offensive MVP of the tournament while CofC goalie Corbin Waller received Defensive MVP honors.  Wes Knight and Ryan Kell were named to the All-Tournament team. The Cougars are back in action Friday when the travel to Orlando, Fla., to play University of Central Florida at 7:30 in the Central Florida Tournament.

Sherron Manswell nets two goals to defeat Maryland 2-0
bceagles.cstv.com

Senior forward Sherron Manswell scored both Boston College goals to lead the Eagles to a 2-0 ACC victory over seventh-ranked Maryland at the Newton Campus Soccer Field.

The game marked the conference opener for both teams. The game also capped a day that featured three Boston College-Maryland contests. BC defeated the Terrapins, 3-2, in volleyball, while the Maryland field hockey team downed BC, 2-0. All three games were hosted by Boston College. Maryland controlled play in the early part of the match, but BC capitalized on its chance at 25:03. Manswell split two Terrapin defenders and beat freshman goalkeeper Thorne Holder. Junior Paul Gerstenberger assisted on the score. Just more than three minutes later -- at 28:41 -- Manswell doubled the BC margin. Junior Alejandro Bedoya dribbled down the right side and fed the ball to freshman Shawn Chin in front of him. Chin delivered a cross into the box where Manswell collected the ball and beat the Maryland keeper to the left side. The goal was the senior striker's third of the season. BC was outshot 5-3 in the first half, but settled down late in the half and more than held its own in the second half. Maryland finished with a 9-7 shot edge. Junior goalkeeper Chris Brown earned his third win of the season, making two stops. Brown's goals against average now stands at 0.50. Holder made one second-half save for the Terps. Boston College returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 18 against Maine. The non-league match will start at 4 p.m. on the Newton Campus Soccer Field.

Glenn's double not enough as the Lions lose 3-2
saintleolions.athleticsite.com

The Saint Leo University men’s soccer team (2-2-2, 0-1 SSC) was edged 3-2 by No. 9 Nova Southeastern University (7-0, 1-0 SSC) in both teams’ Sunshine State Conference opener on Saturday night at the NSU Soccer Complex in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Saint Leo freshman striker Jonathan Glenn (Maloney Gardens, Trinidad & Tobago) scored twice for the Lions, but NSU striker Ally Hassan scored his second goal of the match in the 97th minute to give the Sharks the win.

The Lions opened the scoring in the match in the 23rd minute, as Glenn took a looping ball from Eusebio Montoya (Jr., Smithfield, N.C.) and slotted beyond the reach of NSU goalkeeper Jarod Rennick for his second goal of the season.  Saint Leo led 1-0 at the half, as Rennick made several saves and one Lion effort was cleared off the line. NSU pulled even in the 70th minute when a shot from midfielder Craig Heenighan was spilled by Saint Leo ‘keeper Sam Luedke (Sr., Deltona, Fla.) and Hassan pounced for his first goal of the evening. In the 87th minute, the Sharks earned their first lead of the match when a driving run from midfielder Romain Onteniente eventually led to a strike that found the back of the net for a 2-1 NSU lead. The lead did not last long, as just 29 secondslater, the Lions equalized with Glenn firing a shot beyond the reach of Rennick. In extra time, Hassan took a pass from defender Chris Sarabia and hit a curling effort that settled in the right corner for the game winner. Saint Leo will return home for its next match, as the Lions will host Rollins College in another Sunshine State Conference match on Friday, September 21 at 7:00 p.m.

Cortland Opens SUNYAC Schedule With 4-0 Win vs. New Paltz
cortland.edu

Junior Ayinde George (Arima, Trinidad/San Juan) recorded a goal and an assist as Cortland opened SUNYAC play with a 4-0 shutout over visiting New Paltz. The Red Dragons are 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the league, while the Hawks drop to 0-6 and 0-1. Sophomore David Jacques (Warwick/Don Bosco Prep), junior Adam Jurcic (Guelph, ON/Our Lady of Lourdes) and junior Kyle Stepanovsky (Endicott/Union-Endicott) also scored goals for the Red Dragons. Junior Jack Carillo (Cornwall/Ramapo) made three saves over 79 minutes and junior Greg Arnold (Fulton/G. Ray Bodley) did not make any saves over the final 11 minutes as they combined for the shutout.

George scored his first goal as a Red Dragon when he one-timed a shot from 15 yards out with 11:20 left in the first half. Freshman Corey DeVille (Buffalo/Kenmore West) initiated the scoring chance with a deep service that senior Sean Malone (Tully) headed to George for the shot. Both DeVille and Malone earned assists on the play. Jacques netted his fourth goal of the season just over four minutes later when he took a pass from George and hit a shot from the middle of the box that found its way inside the right post. The lead grew to 3-0 with just seven seconds left in the half when junior Brad Pennypacker (Spencer/Spencer-Van Etten) headed a ball to Jurcic, who converted on a sliding tap-in at the left post for his first Cortland goal. Cortland completed the scoring with 23:16 left on the clock as Stepanovsky one-touched a shot into the net after a crossing pass from the left side by senior Dan Dunn (Warwick/Warwick Valley). New Paltz goalie Peter Carmel (Lake Ronkonkoma/Stony Brook) finished with five saves. Cortland outshot the Hawks, 22-6.

Sandy's Late Goal Lifts Falcons
bgsufalcons.cstv.com

Abiola Sandy's goal in the 109th minute pushed the Bowling Green State University Falcons to a 1-0 win over the visiting University of Central Arkansas Bears in game two of the 2007 Falcon Invitational on Friday afternoon at Mickey Cochrane Stadium. With the win, BGSU improves to 2-2-1 on the year, while UCA drops to 2-3-0.

The extra-minute thriller was the third consecutive home opening match which has been forced into double overtime dating back to 2005. Head coach Fred Thompson's Falcons have now beat then-nationally ranked Ohio State (3-2, 2OT), Western Illinois (2-1, 2OT) and now the University of Central Arkansas (1-0, 2OT) as they usher in the home portion of their schedule. "It is good to be home after four tough road games," said Thompson. "And while I am not a proponent for these double overtime games, I will gladly go to triple or quadruple overtime to start the season this well at home. "The team is determined to start this weekend right, and I believe we are half way there." Today's game-winner, a three-on-two break away goal with less than a minute remaining, was Sandy's second as a Falcon. His first came in regulation play against Cleveland State on Oct. 26, 2005 during his sophomore campaign. In fact, his three goals in 2005 were his latest before today's netter. Last season, Sandy fired just seven shots in his 12 games played. "Coming-off of last weekend [two road loses] this was a big win for us. It has lifted our spirits and will make Sunday fun," said Sandy, the senior man of the hour. "Some of the freshmen are now getting used to our style of play in the collegiate game and are understanding the meaning of intense. It's easy to say I have seen the freshman mature from this game." The fateful goal was scored with 49 seconds remaining in the match as freshman Matt Klancic received a pass at midfield after the Falcon defense cut UCA's attack possession short in the backfield. Sandy, the lead trailer, passed Klancic on a sprint as the two were joined by third Orange and White jersey outnumbering the UCA defense three-to-two. Klancic found Sandy on the right wing and delivered control of the ball and ultimately the game. The senior then split the UCA defensive challengers, fired his shot on the run and the outcome is now history.

"I was really tired at that point, but what can I say, we won," said Sandy. Thompson noted Sandy's athleticism in the play as his sprint was nearly an 80-yard dash. The Orange and Brown's defense held the Bears to three shots in the first period and allowed an additional three throughout the remainder of the match. Keeper Paul Shoemaker made three saves in the win. The shutout is the second of the Falcon's 2007 season and the third of Shoemaker's BGSU career in goal. The match also doubles as the first home shutout since the 1-0 win over Kentucky (Nov. 9) in the second round of the 2003 Mid-American Conference Tournament. Bowling Green will return to action on Sunday afternoon as they repeat today's 2:30 p.m. start to square-off against the Griffins of Canisius College in the final game of the tournament. Canisius dropped their first match of the tournament as they were defeated by the University of Detroit Mercy, 4-0 in game one earlier in the afternoon.

CofC Soccer Remains Undefeated; Blanks Liberty, 2-0
cofcsports.com

Kareem Yearwood and Wes Knight scored goals as the College of Charleston handed Liberty its first loss of the season downing the Flames, 2-0, in Friday afternoon’s opening contest of the UNCW/Jameson Inn Classic at the UNCW Soccer Stadium. Charleston, ranked sixth in the latest South region poll, improved to 5-0-0 on the season. The Flames, ranked 10th in the South-Atlantic region, fell to 3-1-0. Like the Flames, the Cougars had allowed only a single shot to reach the back of the net before taking the field on Friday. So, the defensive stalemate which ensued in the first half was hardly unexpected. The two sides combined to attempt five shots in the first 45 minutes of play, with Liberty owning a 3-2 edge. The Flames also recorded the lone shot on goal during the stanza, forcing Cougar keeper Corbin Waller to make one of his three saves.

The College of Charleston finally broke the ice in the 65th minute, on Yearwood’s fifth goal of the season. Front-line mate Zach Prince looped a short cross into the box from the left side of the field. Yearwood took the feed and deposited it just inside the far post, beating Liberty netminder Paul Gilbert. In the 69th minute, the Cougars doubled their lead on a corner kick. Knight was able to head Miles Alden-Dunn’s effort into the net, making it 2-0. Waller and the College of Charleston defense held the Liberty attackers in check the rest of the way, posting their fourth shutout of the season. For the contest, the Cougars claimed a slim, 7-6 edge in shot attempts, although Liberty took six of the match’s eight corner kicks. The Cougars take on Coastal Carolina on Sunday at 1:00.

Bridegport downed by East Stroudsburg, 3-2
purpleknights.bridgeport.edu

In a battle of two nationally-ranked teams, it was a header by reserve forward John Velasco in the 79th minute that was the difference to give No. 18 East Stroudsburg University a 3-2 win over the No. 12 University of Bridgeport on Friday night.  Velasco's goal off an assist from Billy Alizatti came exaclty a minute after Gilbert Bayonne (Amityville, NY) tied the game at 2-2 to cap a second-half comeback for Bridgeport, which trailed 2-0 at the half.  Curt Sutherland (Branford, CT) scored 11:20 into the half to cut ESU's lead to 2-1. The Warriors got on the board off a corner kick in the 12th minute, as Jason Shegda finished a play that was started by Dan Evans and Danny Drago.  ESU went ahead 2-0 with 2:29 left in the half, as Jason Rudder blasted the ball past Bridgeport keeper Ryan Brooks-Newton (Selkirk, NY) on a rebound opportunity. Bridgeport had several chances to level the score in the final 10 minutes, but ESU goalkeeper Larry Pokrywa made two diving saves and the Purple Knights just missed on two other shots to keep the score at 3-2. ESU entered the game ranked No. 3 in the Northeast Region, just behind Bridgeport, which was ranked second. The Warriors improve to 7-1 on the season, while Bridgeport suffered its second consecutive defeat to fall to 3-2-2. Friday night's match wrapped up a seaon-opening seven-match road trip for the Purple Knights, who will play their 2007 home opener at Knights Field this Thursday, September 20th when they host Post Unviersity at 3:00pm.

saintleolions.athleticsite.com

Saint Leo University forward Brandon Whitsett (Jr., Palm Harbor, Fla.) scored two goals and added an assist to lift the men’s soccer team (2-1-2) to a 4-2 win over visiting Palm Beach Atlantic University (4-1) on Tuesday night at University Field. The Lions also got a goal and two assists from freshman Jonathan Glenn (Maloney Garden, Trinidad & Tobago), while junior forward Eusebio Montoya (Smithfield, N.C.) added the game-winning goal and an assist in the match. After a slow start, the game erupted to life with a goal for each side in the 32nd minute.  Glenn’s strong run on the left resulted in a cross that was only punched by PBA goalkeeper Joseph Yurchak.  Whitsett pounced on the rebound to give the home side the lead.  However, just 42 seconds later a free kick for the Sailfish was deflected in by a Saint Leo defender for an own goal and the equalizer. The score remained tied until the 74th minute when Whitsett picked up a pass from Glenn and then worked himself into a shooting position from the right side of the penalty area.  The striker then curled a left-footed effort beyond the reach of Yurchak that nestled into the left corner of the net for a 2-1 Saint Leo lead.

The Lions made it 3-1 just 1:28 later when Whitsett turned provider for Montoya who slotted home for his team-leading sixth goal of the season in the 75th minute. PBA were awarded a penalty kick in the 84th minute and pulled a goal back when Cheyne Roberts scored from the spot.  However, the Lions quickly regained their two-goal cushion just 17 seconds later when Montoya played a through ball for Glenn who calmly slotted beyond the reach of an oncoming Yurchak for his first career goal. The Lions will open their Sunshine State Conference schedule on Saturday with a trip to Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. to face Nova Southeastern University. The match is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.

Shorter’s Robert Whitnell got the Hawks on the board early off an assist from Jerome Toby (Tobago, Signal Hill), but Emmanuel tied the score in the 25th minute. Whitnell scored shortly before halftime off a pass from Joe Grainger to make it 2-1 at the break. In the second half, Sam Norman scored twice for the Hawks (1-4, 1-1), while Anthony O’Garro, Kyle Timberlake and Dallas Dickerson each added solo goals. Dickerson had three assists in the second half, while Timberlake and Brian Arnold each added one. Thomas Fulton had six saves in goal for the Hawks. Shorter travels to Faulkner on Friday for another SSAC doubleheader, with the women playing at 2 p.m. and the men at 4 p.m.

Indeed.
The greatest single cause of atheism in the world today are Christians who acknowledge Jesus ;with their lips and walk out the door and deny Him by their lifestyle. That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable.

BC soccer settles its scores
Manswell, Eagles take aim at ACC

By Susan Bickelhaupt, Boston Globe Staff

The Boston College men's soccer team began its Atlantic Coast Conference play last Saturday with a 2-0 win over Maryland, then ranked seventh in the country. To say that it was payback is putting it mildly.

The Terrapins defeated the Eagles in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament last year, putting an end to BC's season. So this time, the Eagles were ready and eager.

Senior Sherron Manswell scored both of his team's goals and was named ACC Player of the Week.

"Oh, I was just in the right place at the right time," the striker from Trinidad and Tobago said yesterday.

The Eagles, who improved to 4-1-0 with an 8-0 drubbing of Maine Tuesday, will leave Massachusetts for the first time this season Saturday when they play at the University of North Carolina. And Manswell is hoping for even more payback.

"This team has beaten us for the past two years, so I don't want it to happen a third time," said Manswell, who already has four goals.

BC's women's soccer team does not start ACC play until Sept. 30, but is ranked ninth nationally with a 6-0-1 record after its 2-0 defeat of visiting Fairfield, 2-0, last night on goals by Kelly Henderson and Caitlin Hiler.

Down in Providence, the Brown men (5-0) opened the season in style, upsetting fifth-ranked Santa Clara, 2-1. The 21st-ranked Bears next travel to San Diego for games tomorrow and Sunday. There looks to be an interesting match Oct. 13 in Cambridge when the Bears play ninth-ranked Harvard (6-0).
