T&T U-15 vs El Salvador U-15 (R).

Barbados, El Salvador in final.
By: Ian Prescott (Express).

Some are already saying that El Salvador are the 2007 Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Under-15 Youth Cup champions, even before they play Barbados in tomorrow's final from 6 p.m. at the Marvin Lee Stadium, Macoya.
El Salvador saw off a spirited second-half challenge from hosts Trinidad and Tobago to win 3-1 in what was considerably the stronger of yesterday's semi-final matches at the Hasely Crawford.
In the first semi-final, Barbados beat Guyana 5-0, getting a beaver-trick from striker Louis Moss (4th, 10th, 25th and 33rd) and one from Elsig Migins (65th).
Not that Barbados are so good, though, it's that Guyana are so bad. But, tomorrow, Barbados face a tougher test against El Salvador, who have already beaten them at the group stage.
Preceding tomorrow's final, T&T battle Guyanese from 4 p.m. for third place in the competition.
Yesterday, Trinidad and Tobago's under-15s began by trying to put El Salvador under pressure.
But, it was the Central Americans who settled better and had the first scoring chance, forcing T&T keeper John Thomas to push the ball onto the crossbar. From the resulting corner, Francisco Palacios, a little central defender, was allowed to get at the ball, looping a header over Thomas and giving El Salvador a 1-0 advantage in the 17th minute.
Trinidad and Tobago found themselves crowded and unable to do much in attack, while El Salvador, growing in confidence after a shaky start, repeatedly breached their opponents' right flank.
Without midfield service, Jerrel Britto, T&T's top scorer with 11 goals in the tournament, had very few opportunities to trouble the El Salvador goal.
Coach Reynold Carrington started without two key players. Anselm Jackson, his most penetrative attacker, was benched and, subsequently, the national team got little production at right midfield.
Likewise, central midfielder Ryan Fredericks had looked T&T's most organised player early in the tournament, but was also on the bench. Without his simple but effective play, Trinidad and Tobago struggled to get the ball up front, never managing a good shot at the El Salvador goal in the first half.
Also, Shaquille Stewart, T&T's left back, had too much work to do as the wide midfielders did not pay any attention to defence. Consequently, in almost the exact fashion which afflicted the national Under-17s at the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in South Korea, El Salvador drove up the T&T right flank like a freeway.
It could simply have been that El Salvador produced a better team than Trinidad and Tobago. They were faster to the ball, never shied away from aerial tackles, and always looked to get the ball wide.
It seemed a simple enough plan, but none of the T&T players seemed to understand that. Trinidad and Tobago's lone plan seemed to be to get the ball to their captain Britto and between him and the sphere there were always several blue shirts.
Jackson was brought on at the start of the second half and had an immediate impact, forcing El Salvador to defend. But, even though they dominated the half, T&T were still forced to change their game, using the long ball aimed at targetman Britto.
Against the run of play, and after surviving a ton of pressure, Jonathan Cabera squeezed in the ball giving El Salvador a 2-0 lead in the 53rd minute.
But Britto pulled his team back to 2-1 in the 59th, when producing one of the best goals of the tournament. Collecting Jackson's pass, Britto chipped the ball over the head of his marker, before he hit a scorcher into the roof of the El Salvador net. The goal lifted Young T&T and they twice came close to getting an equaliser, Galteau's shot just edging wide of goal, and later Britto was blocked by the El Salvador keeper. But, despite plenty pressure, T&T could not produce another gem to pull level.

Here we go again. Reality bites. Creaming all the island teams, then we meet a team that can push the ball around, run into spaces etc. We need regular and tougher competition.

Barbados, El Salvador in final

Ian Prescott iprescott@trinidadexpress.com

ON THE ATTACK: Trinidad and Tobago's Reagan Gaulteau, left, takes the ball under pressure from El Salvador's Israel Hercules during yesterday's CFU Youth Cup semi-final at the Hasely Crawford Stadium. El Salvador upset the hosts 3-1 and will play Barbados in tomorrow's final at the Marvin Lee Stadium, Macoya.

We coddle young players. Look like they may need to tweak the selection process so mental attributes like coachability get showcased over skill. Carrington better learn to see and adapt real fast, and communicate what he wants. If not we might as well bring back Ron La!  8)

It's interesting that the 2 finalist came out of the Tobago group. With respect to El Salvador, they had a special player (# 15) that was playing through the left side. That was their strength, and we probably couldn't solve that problem. This is just from what I saw in the Tobago gamewhere he scored 2 and made the third.

A somewhat different perspective from the Trinidad Newsday

El Salvador spank U-15 ‘Warriors’
By JOEL BAILEY Wednesday, August 29 2007

EL SALVADOR gave a totally professional display as they spanked Trinidad and Tobago 3-1 in yesterday’s second semi-final of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Youth Cup, at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo.

Francisco Palacios, Jonathan Cabrera and Edwin Gonzalez got their names on the scoresheet for the Central Americans, in the 80-minute match, while Jerrel Britto notched his 12th goal of the tournament for the hosts.

El Salvador, the competition’s guest team, will play Barbados in tomorrow’s final at the Marvin Lee Stadium, Tunapuna. The Bajans hammered Guyana 5-0 in yesterday’s other semi with Louis Moss netting a quartet of goals (fourth, 10th, 25th and 32nd) with Elsrid Miggins notching the fifth in the 65th.

With strikers Jose Rodriguez and Ricardo Guevara receiving ample support from their wingers Cristian Noe Bustillo and Cabrera, as well as playmaker Jorge Arias, the Salvadoreans were relentless in their attacks on goal. Bustillo forced a timely block by Moriba Ballah following a 11th minute corner, while TT’s goalkeeper John Thomas had to make a good stop to deny Cabrera in the 16th.

A deflected shot by Bustillo hit the crossbar and sailed out of play in the 17th and, from the subsequent corner, Palacios headed Bustillo’s corner into the back of the net.

Britto, who was at the forefront of TT’s quest for the title, was tightly marked by full-backs Fidel Jiminez and Israel Hercules, while the hosts made matters worse for themselves with an array of bad passes, poor control and slowness to react to the ball.

National central defender Akeems Grant’s needless back-pass to Thomas was intercepted by Rodriguez but the striker’s shot was cleared off the line by Richarde Wint in the 38th.

Wint was the only TT defender who seemed able to match the speed and variety of the Salvadoreans before he was replaced, due to injury, in the 51st.

Bustillo played a part in El Salvador’s second goal two minutes later, as he was picked out on the left flank by a diagonal pass, weaved past right-back Dinell Lopez and his cross was tapped home by Cabrera with Thomas in no-man’s land.

TT’s first shot on target brought the crowd to their feet, as Britto expertedly controlled a right-sided centre from substitute Anselm Jackson in the 59th, spun past Jiminez and rifled a left-footer past the diving Elmer Iglesias.

Reagan Gaulteau’s left-footed effort curled away from Iglesias’ goal in the 70th while Grant was forced to clear a bicycle attempt from Kelvin Segovia three minutes later.

But the visitors completed the win in stoppage time, as Bustillo was spotted from a deep freekick from Carlos Sandoval, and the winger’s cross to Gonzalez was headed past the stranded Thomas.

El Salvador’s approach to the tournament was summarised after the game, as their players purposefully engaged in a lengthy warm-down session, while the hosts grudgingly strolled off the field, after being outplayed from start to finish.

Couple questions spring to mind:

Quote

1. Wha is dis story?

My guess is that El Salvador is using this tournament as a warm up for the UNCAF (Central American Football Union) under-16 tournament in Belize. That tournament starts on September 19 in Belize City at the MCC Grounds.

Miércoles 19 septiembre
Guatemala – El Salvador / 17:15 horas
Belice – Panamá / 19:30 horas

Jueves 20 septiembre
Panamá – El Salvador / 17:15 horas
Costa Rica – Guatemala / 19:30 horas

Viernes 21 septiembre
El Salvador – Costa Rica / 14:45 horas
Belice – Guatemala / 17:00 horas

Sábado 22 septiembre
Guatemala – Panamá / 14:45 horas
Belice – Costa Rica / 17:00 horas

Domingo 23 septiembre
Panamá – Costa Rica / 14:45 horas
Belice – El Salvador / 17:00 horas

Nicaragua (like Jamaica ;)) is apparently not up to the occasion. Honduras is also missing (ed.).

Let's see how the Salvadorans stack up in this environment.

It really would be useful to play versus Central American opposition consistently through the age groups so that it's not a sudden shock to the system when we encounter them at senior level.

Anybody been to Belize? It's a serious blend of 'West Indian' and Central American.
