Women's team off to begin Olympic quest.

Trinidad and Tobago’s National Women’s Olympic team will begin their quest for a place in the Beijing Olympics when they go into Caribbean Football Union first round action next week in Suriname.
The squad, coached by Marlon Charles departs for Suriname on Sunday where it will play three games against  St Vincent/Grenadines (October 2), Grenada (October 4) and the hosts on October 7.
The winner of the group will advance to a CFU final round and while T&T has grown accustomed to getting the better of teams like the upcoming oppositions, Charles used the ongoing Women’s World Cup as a reference to evidence that the women’s game is developing and teams are stepping up.
“Right now we are trying to put the best possible mix of players together because the majority of our team is based in the United States and for this tournament we could only get five of them because of the conflicting schedules. So with that we have to use those players in a combination with our Under 20s,” Charles told TTFF Media.
“But it doesn’t mean we will back down by any means because it’s a great chance for the younger players to step into an environment where the competition is of  a higher level. It’s a challenge we are looking forward to.”
Not complaining, Charles mentioned that the US-based players normally could not get released for the regional tournaments because the schools continue to be unwilling to release them because of their ongoing schedule of games.
“It’s always difficult for us to get access to them for these tournaments because of the timing of their matches in the US and in most instances the schools tell us that the player is too important to the team and they are unwilling to release them. An example is one with Patrice Superville who was initially refused release by her school and her coach, in speaking to me, explained that she was too important to his team. Only after I explained that we were only getting five of our overseas players then he agreed to let her go. That’s the price sometimes when you have the better players moving on to play in the foreign leagues.”
Looking ahead to the Caribbean opposition, Charles added: “Every country is trying to develop their women’s game and this means we can never go into a tournament thinking ‘well we have beaten them before’ because every game is a different and the evidence is there to see in the current Women’s World Cup. Teams are continuing to improve and in our competitions, we always need to stay on top of our game. We need to play as best as we can at all times,” Charles concluded.

Road to 2008 Olympics begins this week

1.10.07 - The road to next year’s Olympic Games starts in October for CONCACAF's women's teams with Qualification commencing in the Caribbean and Central America this week.
Fifteen Caribbean nations have been placed in four groups for the opening round of the 2008 CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualification. The Cayman Islands will stage a three-team group, while Antigua & Barbuda, Dominican Republic and Surinam will each host a quadrangular that will run from 2-28 October.
The four group winners will advance to the second round later this year with the top two teams progressing to the final round of 2008 CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualification.
Elsewhere, the Women’s Central American Qualification will have El Salvador taking on Nicaragua in a home-and-away first round series from 6-13 October with the winner advancing to meet Costa Rica in the second round later in the month.
The Central American Second Round Winner will secure a place in the 2008 CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualification Final Round joining the two Caribbean qualifiers, Canada, Mexico and USA, with venue and dates to be announced in due course, where two teams will qualify to the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China.

Next up on Wednesday is T & T v Grenada (I expect T & T to reach double figures here) and Suriname v SVG.  The key match is on Saturday, with hosts Suriname taking on the Soca Princesses.  I say this game should be closer, but T&T should win by 2 or 3 goals.

After this, if they succeed, they must meet the other 3 group winners (likely to be Haiti, Jamaica and Cuba/Dominican Republic).  The top 2 from these 4 goes to the 6-team CONCACAF final tournament along with USA, Canada, Mexico and one team from Central America (most likely Costa Rica).  The top 2 from this tournament will take part in the 2008 Olympics.

Trinidad and Tobago's Olympic Women's team kicked off their Beijing qualifying campaign with a convincing 9-0 whipping of St Vincent and the Grenadines at the at the Dr. Ir. Franklin Essed Stadium in Paramaribo on Tuesday.

The T&T team was led by Avenell Isaac who struck four times while Tasha St Louis got a brace and Nikeisha Noel, Maria Shade and Niasha Reyes added others to make sure of the three points.

In the other encounter hosts Suriname thumped Grenada 6-1. T&T takes on Grenada in its second game on Thursday at the same venue.

The quadrangular concludes on Sunday with St. Vincent & The Grenadines facing Grenada and then Surinam greeting Trinidad & Tobago.

Four Caribbean teams earn victories at Caribbean qualifiers

4.10.07 - Four Caribbean teams (Antigua & Barbuda, Cuba, Jamaica, Dominican Republic) began their first round groups to the 2008 CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualification with victories on Wednesday.
Two goals by Johanna Santelis helped the host, Dominican Republic (1-0-0, 3 Points) to a 4:0 triumph over the US Virgin Islands (0-1-0, 0 Points) in the Group B play at the Estadio Parque del Este in Santo Domingo.

In the other Group B encounter, five goals by Yezenia Gallardo and four each from Niurka Cuesta and Misleldis Reyes led Cuba (1-0-0, 3 Points) to a record-win of 21:0 over the British Virgin Islands (0-1-0, 0 Points). The result ties the largest margin of victory by a Women’s national team in a CONCACAF match, with the other encounter being Canada over Puerto Rico (21:0) in Toronto, Ontario on 28 August 1998.

Meanwhile, in Group C action, Keneshia Reid scored twice to pace Jamaica (1-0-0, 3 Points) to a 4:0 win over Bermuda (0-1-0, 0 Points) at the Antigua Recreation Ground in St. John’s, Antigua & Barbuda on Wednesday. Three teams advance to Caribbean Second Round

7.10.07 - Cuba, Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago advanced to the Caribbean Second Round to the 2008 CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualification after winning their respective first round groups on Sunday.
Group A: Trinidad & Tobago (3-0-0, 9 Points) claimed first-place and a berth in the Caribbean Second Round with a 4:1 victory over the hosts, Surinam (2-1-0, 6 Points) at the Dr. Ir. Franklin Essed Stadium in Paramaribo. In an earlier encounter on Sunday, Grenada (1-2-0, 3 Points) topped St. Vincent & The Grenadines (0-3-0, 0 Points) by a score of 3:1.

Group B: Yezenia Gallardo scored twice to lead Cuba (3-0-0, 9 Points) to a 2:1 triumph against the home-side of the Dominican Republic (2-1-0, 6 Points) at the Estadio Parque del Este in Santo Domingo. The win secured the leonas del caribe a place in the Caribbean Second Round for the first time in their women’s football history. In the other group match on Sunday, Zauditu Kaza-Amlak had two goals to help the US Virgin Islands (1-2-0, 3 Points) to a 5:0 victory over the British Virgin Islands (0-3-0, 0 Points).

Group C: Tashana Vincent had four goals to pace Jamaica (3-0-0, 9 Points) to an 8:0 win against Dominica (0-3-0, 0 Points) at the Antigua Recreation Ground in St. John’s, Antigua & Barbuda. The triumph gave the reggae girlz the group crown and a spot in the Caribbean Second Round. In the other group encounter on Sunday, Shuntae Todd scored twice for Bermuda (2-1-0, 6 Points) in the 4:0 victory over Antigua & Barbuda (1-2-0, 3 Points).

Cuba, Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago will join Group D winner (taking place in the Cayman Islands this month) in the Caribbean Second Round later this year with the top two teams progressing to the final round of 2008 CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualification.

Elsewhere, the Women’s Central American Qualification has Nicaragua holding a 2:1 lead in the home-and-away first round series when they host El Salvador on 13 October with the winner advancing to meet Costa Rica in the second round later in the month.

The Central American Second Round Winner will secure a place in the 2008 CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualification Final Round joining the two Caribbean qualifiers, Canada, Mexico and USA, with venue and dates to be announced in due course, where two teams will qualify to the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China.

The first group stages of Caribbean qualifying for the Women's Olympic Football Tournament in Beijing next year proved a mixed bag over the course of three match-days from 3-7 October. While T&T, Cuba and Jamaica all won their sections with perfect nine-point hauls from three matches, some of the less-known sides suffered terrible hidings.

Trinidad & Tobago, whose men's, youth and women's teams have been undergoing a revival in recent years, jumped predictably out to take sole ownership of top spot in Group A in Paramaribo, Surinam.

Avenell Isaac scored four and Tasha St. Louis added two more in a 9-0 opening win over St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Grenada were next to feel the Trinidadian heat as the dual-islanders roared to a 6-0 win thanks to a hat trick from the prolific St. Louis. They rounded out the proceedings and qualified for the next stages as group winner with a 4-1 win over hosts Surinam.

"You can't come into these types of things thinking it's going to be easy," coach Marlon Charles said. "So we made sure that we were prepared for our task." With 19 goals scored and only one conceded it seems the coach in his charges got the preps just right.

Cuban training methods for the their Group B campaign seemed just as on-the-spot. After starting with a 4-0 win over hosts Dominican Republic in Santo Domingo, the ladies from Havana unloaded in their second game against the British Virgin Islands. The 21-0 result illustrated a serious gulf in class between the two teams and tied the largest all-time margin of victory in a CONCACAF women's match. Yezenia Gallardo scored five and four each from Niurka Cuesta and Misleldis Reyes made the contest a virtual walkover from the early minutes.

The Cubans then repeated the dose on the US Virgin Islands in their last match on Sunday, albeit with far less fanfare - and scoring. Gallardo grabbed two more in a tense 2-1 win. 37 goals for and one against means Cuba are now a team to watch.

Jamaica were the third smiling side on Sunday, as they roared emphatically to the top of Group C to book a place in the next rounds. And in perhaps the most impressive performance of the round, they didn't conceded a single goal in a 4-0 win over Bermuda, a 12-0 win over hosts Antigua and Barbuda and an 8-0 win over Dominica for 24 goals scored and zero conceded.

Keneshia Reid and Tanasha Vincent were the ace markswomen for the Jamaicans and will be a pair to watch out for in the next rounds.

Cuba, T&T and Jamaica will join up with the winner of Group D (Cayman Islands, Haiti or Puerto Rico) in the four-team second round to take place later this year. The top two teams from the round robin will qualify for the final round of CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying for Beijing 2008, where big gals the USA, Canada and Mexico will join the party along with one representative from Central America.
