Four goals, two OTs, one Falcon tie
bgsufalcons.collegesports.com

Senior Abiola Sandy converted a penalty kick while classmate Alec Perea chipped in the tying goal as the Falcons took the visiting Hartwick Hawks to a suspenseful double-overtime 2-2 tie in the Mid-American Conference home opener at Mickey Cochrane Stadium. The Falcons move to 3-7-3 (0-1-0 MAC) on the season while the Hawks are now 3-4-3 (0-1-1 MAC). "We were down a goal on two separate occasions and fought back to tie the game twice," said head coach Fred Thompson. "This type of plays shows the heart we are developing as we grow as a team. "Hartwick is a very industrious team. I have to give them credit for the constant energy they bring to the table because it almost cost us the game today." The Hawks recorded their first score when John Paul Boyle intercepted Cameron Hepple's pass in Hartwick's territory mid-way through the first half of play . Once possession was ensured, Boyle challenged the Falcons' charging goal keeper, Paul Shoemaker, and helped the Hawks to their first lead of the game at 23:47.  Soon there after, Hartwick appeared as if their lead would be extended via a fast paced attack at Shoemaker, but Thomas  McLean quickly ended such hopes as he slid into and blocked a shot on goal sending it out of play and re-setting the pace of  play. Hartwick took the single-goal lead into halftime but the Falcon's needed only three minutes of the second period to execute their first rally of the match. An infraction by the Hartwick defense against Matt Klancic allotted the Falcons their second penalty kick of the season which was once again successfully taken by Sandy.

Bowling Green found themselves once again behind a goal six minutes later as the Hawks used a corner kick to their advantage  by finding the smallest line of space to split members of the Falcons defense. Hartwick was up 2-1 with nearly 37-minutes remaining in regulation. Bowling Green charged back for the second time at 61:05 when senior Ryan Perea received Shoemaker's goal kick near the midfield line and took matters into his own hands (and feet). Perea beat out a pair of Hartwick's defenders who were attempting to sandwich the senior in a smothering defensive effort. Once past that obstacle, Perea chipped a shot over the Hawks' keeper and netted his first goal of the season and the last of the game. With the goal, Shoemaker picked up his first assist with the Falcons. With the score tied at two-all, Boyle tried to win a two-on-one battle against the Falcons by narrowly out maneuvering Sandy and then set his sights on a game of cat and mouse with Shoemaker. By correctly timing Boyle's dispossession of the ball, Shoemaker won the second-half of the one-on-one and kept the Falcons within striking distance of the win. "Boyle is a quick player who can give a defense trouble," said Thompson. "As a matter of fact he was doing his job quite well and had our defense on their heels a few times in today's match." Momentum picked up as each team embraced the urgent need to score but it was the contending keepers playing their best soccer of the match in the final 15 minutes which gave way for the match to move into extra minutes. Hope flickered for the Falcons with 10-seconds remaining in regulation when Chuko Evwaraye tried to turn a crossing pass from Hepple into his second game winning goal of the season, but the shot had a bit too much power and sailed over the heads of the Hartwick defense only to land out of bounds. Defense ruled the following 20-minutes of overtime play and the first MAC meeting between the programs resulted in the 2-2 tie. As the season progresses, the Falcons continue to push their home matches into extra minutes. Of their five home matches, only one (Sept. 20) was decided in regulation. The Falcons have also required each of their MAC matches to be finalized in overtime. Looking ahead, the upcoming week could be the toughest in recent BGSU memory as the Falcons face not one, but two nationally ranked opponents on their own grass. First BGSU will travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. for a mid-week non-conference dual with the Wolverines of 21 Michigan. The soccer Falcons will then turn around and prepare for an evening showdown with conference rival Akron on Saturday.

Ancil Farrier leads Owls past Bryant 4-2
southernowls.com

Junior defender Ancil Farrier (Los Bajos, Trinidad) scored two goals and recorded an assist on Saturday night to lead the Southern Connecticut State University men’s soccer team to a 4-2 victory over Bryant in a Northeast-10 Conference contest at Jess Dow Field. Mike Gargiulo picked up two assists for Bryant in defeat. With the win and a tie by Merrimack against Massachusetts-Lowell, SCSU is guaranteed a home game in the first round of the 2007 Northeast-10 Conference Championships, scheduled for Oct. 28. The Owls improve to 10-2-3 (8-1-2 NE-10) with the victory while Bryant falls to (9-6-0, 5-6-0 NE-10). The Owls opened the scoring in the 13th minute. Farrier served a ball towards the penalty area from just on the Bryan side of midfield. Near the top of the 18-yard box, freshman midfielder Brandin McClay (East Taunton, Mass.) jumped up, got his head to the ball and was able to re-direct it beyond the reach of Bryant goalkeeper Thomas Madden to give SCSU a 1-0 lead.

Farrier would strike just 6:49 later for his first of two tallies in the opening half. In the 20th minute, Farrier took the ball one-on-one against a Bryant defender through the left side of the penalty area. From about 15 yards away, he lined a shot to the far corner of the net; just beyond a diving Madden to give extend the Owls lead to 2-0. Later, in the 35th minute, Farrier would strike again, this time for his team-leading seventh goal of the season. Sophomore Michael Dibartolomeo (Wallingford, Conn.) took a corner kick from the left corner and it landed right at the feet of Farrier in front of the Bryant net. Farrier knocked it home for his second goal of the game and a 3-0 SCSU lead. Bryant would get a goal back with 4:59 to play in the first half. Out of a scramble in the middle of the penalty area, Mike Gargiulo was able to poke the ball loose to a wide open Matthew Brown in the left side of the box. Brown rifled it home to cut the SCSU lead to 3-1 as the teams headed to the locker room. The Owls held a 5-4 shots advantage headed into the halftime break. The Bulldogs pulled to within a goal just 3:12 into the second half. Again Gargiulo picked up an assist as he fed the ball into the box from the right side. Manny Rodriguez was waiting for it at the left post and headed it in to cut the deficit to 3-2. In the 71st minute, Bryant momentarily appeared to have tied the game when the ball was knocked into the goal off a corner kick taken by Sean Kaukas. However, it was ruled the ball was deflected in with a handball and the goal was disallowed. Junior midfielder Djordje Jankovic (Sabac, Serbia) put the game on ice for the Owls when he scored his second goal of the season with 37.4 seconds remaining on the clock. Senior forward Larry Yeboah (Worcester, Mass.) crossed the ball from the left side and found Jankovic in the center of the penalty area. Jankovic headed it past Madden to create the 4-2 final score. Bryant held a 6-5 shots advantage in the second half and each team finished with 10 shots in the full 90 minutes. Senior goalkeeper Brendan Lawless (Orleans, Mass.) made zero saves in net while he earned the victory for SCSU. Madden made one save in front of the Bryant goal in defeat. The Owls return to action on Wednesday, October 17 when they visit current Northeast-10 leader Franklin Pierce. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Sodexho Field in Rindge, N.H.

Yearwood's double steers Cougars to victory Over Spartans
cofcsports.com

Kareem Yearwood and Zach Prince combined to score three goals as the College of Charleston defeated UNC Greensboro 3-1 in SoCon men’s soccer action at UNCG Soccer Stadium on Saturday night. “The team played so hard and so committed,” said CofC Head Coach Ralph Lundy.  “It was a great team win with a great team effort.” The Cougars (8-3-1, 2-0-0) continue unbeaten in the Southern Conference, while the Spartans fall to 6-5-2 overall, 2-3-0 in the league. Charleston took an early lead when Prince scored just 6:05 into the match.  Midfielder Wes Knight fed Prince the ball deep in the right corner. Prince hit a ball up the end line, which bounced past the outstretched keeper for an unthinkable angle goal and a 1-0 lead.

After College of Charleston recorded six of the first seven shots of the match, UNCG recorded six of the next seven and had several good chances in the first half. However, the score remained the same until 49:08. The Cougars’ Doug Edwards wound up for a blast from just inside the top of the box, but just missed. Instead, the ball wound up at the feet of Yearwood, who popped in from nine yards out for his eighth goal of the season. Yearwood’s scored his ninth goal of the season when Casey Gold sent Spartan goalie Chad Janda off the line.  Yearwood collected and sent the ball over Janda’s head and into the goal from 22 yards out for a 3-0 advantage.  He now leads the SoCon in goals. The Spartans ruined the shutout with 1:27 to play. David Grayson hit a blast from 10 yards out that bounced off the right post and goalkeeper Corbin Waller before finding the bottom right corner of the net.  UNCG held a 19-11 advantage in shots, but Waller logged six saves for the first Cougar win on the Spartans’ home turf. “Corbin Waller led the team with an outstanding performance,” Lundy continued.  “UNCG attacked and we defended with total commitment.” The Cougars will take the week to gear up for Furman which they will host at 6 p.m. Sat., Oct. 20, at Patriots Point Field in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.

Clevon George scored the eventual game-winner in the 77th minute, heading a cross from Milien past the Southern keeper to give Tampa the 3-2 lead. The goal, George’s sixth of the season, moves him back into a tie with Ricardo Cardoso for the team lead. Milien led the way for the Spartans offensively, scoring the first goal of his career and assisting on George’s game-winner. lindseyathletics.com

The 4th-Ranked Lindsey Wilson College men’s soccer team needed a come-from-behind effort tonight to spoil the upset bid of Embry-Riddle (Fla.) University 2-1 at Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium. After a scoreless first half, Embry-Riddle’s Joe Yoffe scored on a penalty kick in the 56th minute to help the Eagles (3-7-2) grab the 1-0 lead. With the victory the Bulls move to 8-3-2 overall and 2-0 in the Mid-American Conference. Dominic Oppong (Scarborough, Ontario/Cardinal Newman) also picked up an assist on the goal. For Lara, the goal was the first of his UB career.

Brooklyn drops heartbreaker to Medgar, 3-2, in overtime
brooklyncollegeathletics.com

The Brooklyn College Men's Soccer Team (2-9, 1-5 CUNYAC) came back from a two goal deficit to send their final home game of the season into overtime, but could not hang on as Medgar Evers' Kelly Celestine scored four minutes into the extra session to give Medgar (6-8, 4-2 CUNYAC) a 3-2 victory. The game was a very physical, well-played affair as both teams spent most of the first half trying to control the midfield. An early goal by Kwame Adisson gave Medgar a 1-0 lead that they carried into halftime. Eight minutes into the second stanza, Medgar negated a BC attack and then lofted a ball over the Brooklyn defenders.  When first-year goalkeeper Scott Geller came out too far to try and stop the Celestine, who caught up to the pass and was in the clear, all the Medgar forward had to do was touch the ball past Geller and into the empty net for a 2-0 Cougar lead.

Brooklyn came right back and scored within the next 30 seconds as Stephen Chase (St. Mary's College/Brooklyn, NY) scored off a deflection from the Medgar goalie Eric Browne, who stopped a shot from Elis Llagami (FDR/Brooklyn, NY). The game remained 2-1 for the next 22 minutes, but then BC got a corner kick from the left side and Llagami aired the ball to the right post where Jason Trotman (Fatima College/Brooklyn, NY) headed the ball passed Browne and the game was now tied. During the short overtime session, Medgar Evers' Tito Thorpe sailed a pass over the Brooklyn defense, finding Celestine for the game-winner. Although dejected from the game's outcome, BC has played a much improved brand of soccer over the second half of their season and is primed to make a run at the playoffs as they hit the road to take on CCNY on Saturday at 6pm.

Steve McKay put the Foresters' first goal in at the 10:15 mark and the floodgates opened.  HU scored six more times in the first half and finished with a 10-0 rout of Taylor University Fort Wayne. After McKay's score, the Foresters turned up the heat and netted four more goals in a nine minute span beginning with Marc William scoring off a pass from Brad Kunze 13 minutes into the half.  Eric Bjorndal set up Joel Sanders 60 seconds later to make it 3-0.  McKay then found the back of the net at the 20:00 and 22:00 minute marks off two assists from Sanders to record his second hat trick of the season. Six minutes later William put in his second goal off an assist from Andrew Wust and then Wust closed out the half with a score from an assist by Abe Janson. Late in the second period, Taylor Zeman dished out back-to-back assists to Janson and Tyler Gleason and in the 81st minute, Kyle Brohm made it 10-0 off a pass from Jason Metzger. "I was pleased with their preparation and focus leading up to the game and it quickly showed as we controlled the game from the start," said Coach Lawson. With the win, HU again pulls its record even at 7-7 on the year.

Glenn's 11th goal (in 8 matches) is in vain
saintleolions.athleticsite.com

The Saint Leo University men’s soccer team (7-3-2, 3-2 SSC) fell 4-2 on the road to the University of Tampa (7-4, 3-2 SSC) on Wednesday night in a Sunshine State Conference match. The Lions trailed from the start, as their five-match winning streak was snapped.  Tampa scored two goals inside the first 16 minutes and managed to restore their two-goal lead twice more before winning by that margin. Saint Leo pulled to within a goal at 2-1 in the 27th minute when Jonathan Glenn (Fr., Maloney Gardens, Trinidad & Tobago) scored his team-leading 11th goal of the season.  A cross field pass from Eusebio Montoya (Jr., Smithfield, N.C.) was flicked down by Brandon Whitsett (Jr., Palm Harbor, Fla.) and into the path of Glenn.  The striker calmly flicked it beyond the Spartans goalkeeper to bring the Lions within one. Tampa regained its two-goal lead in the 32nd minute when a cross from the left fell to substitute Ryan Maxwell.  The striker fired a half-volley that caught the upper left corner and gave the home side a 3-1 lead, which they took into the locker room. The Lions pulled another goal back early in the second half, as a cross from Luis Quintero (Sr., Cape Coral, Fla.) was headed home by Leonardo Nogueira (So., Sao Paulo, Brazil) for his third goal of the season.  However, the Spartans once again restored their two-goal lead and provided the final margin when a free kick from Dan Ingvarsson was curled into the upper right corner. The Lions will return home to face Lynn University in a Sunshine State Conference match on Saturday.  The match will be the second half of an SSC doubleheader and will begin at 7:30 p.m.

McAuley's 6th goal of the season helps Aces over Western Kentucky
gopurpleaces.com

The Aces became the aggressor in the second half, and three goals were the result in the University of Evansville's 3-0 men's soccer victory over Western Kentucky Wednesday night at UE's Black Beauty Field. It was the first Missouri Valley Conference match of the season for both teams. The Aces (7-4-0) broke the scoreless tie at 49:15 when Kipp Erskine headed in Kieran Purcell's corner kick to the left of WKU goalkeeper Pat Rickman. Then at 59:10, Ian McAuley put the Aces up 2-0 with his team-high sixth goal of the season, beating a Western Kentucky defender to the ball as it rolled toward the open net following Mike Luttrull's deflected shot. Goal three came at 79:36 when Cory Elenio made a perfect cross from the right side that found Jordan Beshears on the run directly in front of the Hilltoppers' goal. In stride, Beshears booted the crossing pass into the top shelf for his first career goal. Evansville outshot the Hilltoppers 15-7, including 9-3 in the second half. UE put eight shots on goal while WKU shot three on goal against Evansville's Alec Dufty, who posted the Aces' third shutout of the season. Five of the Aces' next six matches are on the road, beginning with an MVC contest Saturday night at 7:00 at Des Moines, Iowa against the Drake Bulldogs, who opened MVC play this afternoon with a 2-2 tie at Eastern Illinois.

USC Aiken Knocks off Mount Olive 2-0 to remain perfect at the Pit
pacersports.com

Senior goalkeeper Leonel Medina stopped a career-high 11 shots in goal as USC Aiken (6-6-1) knocked of regionally-ranked Mount Olive (6-7-0) by the score of 2-0 on Wednesday evening in non-conference men’s soccer action at Pacer Pit.  A perfect 6-0-0 at home this season, the Pacers extended their remarkable home unbeaten streak to 14 consecutive games (13-0-1). “Our team thrives off the energy here,” said USC Aiken head coach Ike Ofoje, commenting on the Pacers’ impressive home record.  “Thanks to the fans for their help.  This is the kind of spirit we need at all USCA athletic events, and when basketball season starts, we will definitely pay them [the fans] back.”  Making a number of sensational saves on the evening, Medina nearly doubled his previous career-best of six saves in the season opener at Pfeiffer on August 25.  In the process, the Merida, Mexico native notched his second shutout of the season. Kofi Akyere got the Pacers on the board in the 31st minute as he beat Trojan netminder Chase Smith one on one, firing a shot to the lower corner from 20 yards out.  It was the seventh marker of the season for Akyere, which leads the team and ranks fourth in the Peach Belt Conference in goals scored. Despite allowing two goals on the night, Smith recorded three saves and performed well in goal for Mount Olive, stopping two of the three penalty shots he faced. Mount Olive’s best attempt at tying the game came in the opening moments of the season half.  A misplayed ball near the midfield by the Pacers resulted in an attacking opportunity for the Trojans.  But facing Medina, Drew Toler’s shot was blocked by Medina.  On the loose ball, Toler tried to score into the open net, but a Pacer defense was able to register the team save by clearing the shot attempt. A foul in the box in the 69th minute resulted in the first penalty kick opportunity on the season for USCA.  Smith, however, made a diving save on Alex Lewis’ shot to the lower left corner to keep the game at 1-0.

Dennison Scipio attempted the Pacers’ second PK in the 86th minute, but again Smith came up huge, diving right to make the stop. Finally, in the 88th minute, Durrell Johnson tacked on the much-needed insurance tally, scoring on a penalty kick after being taken down in the box in front of the net, to make it 2-0. Mount Olive finished with a 17-15 edge in shots including a 12-5 margin in ones on goal. In snapping the Trojans’ three-game win streak, the Pacers improve to 8-2-1 all-time against Mount Olive, and after losing their first four matches to open the 2007 season, USCA is 6-2-1 since that rough start. USC Aiken will host Montreat on Monday, October 15 at 7:00 PM in the final home game for 13 Pacer seniors.  Mount Olive steps back into Conference Carolinas play on Saturday, October 13 traveling to Erskine for a 3:00 PM contest.

Marshall's First Goal Seals Tie With FAU
gousfbulls.com

In its third double-overtime match in the last four outings, the No. 15 University of South Florida men's soccer team recorded its second tie of the year, a 1-1 final against Florida Atlantic, Tuesday night at FAU Field. Capping off a four-game road stint, USF, 7-2-2 (2-2-1), fell behind for only the third time this season when the Owls' Gianni Piccoletti placed a header past Bulls goalkeeper Diego Restrepo in the 17th minute of play for his second score of the year. Senior defender David Acosta was credited with the assist. "I felt like we started the match slow, but then picked up our game in the last 20 minutes of the first half and continued to improve in the start of the second," said head coach George Kiefer.

That improved play was evident by junior defender Yohance Marshall registering his first goal of the year to equalize the match just before the conclusion of the first half. In the 44th minute, freshman midfielder Bernardo Anor sent a free kick into FAU's box that Marshall was able to power into the net. The header was the third career goal of the Malabar Arima, Trinidad, native's career and the first points for him this year. Marshall's shot on goal was his second this season, as he took the first penalty kick against UCF in the season opener. For Anor, the assist was the his second this year, brining his points total to 10 and making him the fourth Bull in double-digits in that category this season, (Jordan Seabrook - 15, Simon Schoendorf - 13, Kevon Neaves - 10). The 1-1 score proved to be all the offense in the contest, as the score remained steady through the second half and two overtimes, despite USF advancement. "I was happy with the chances we created in overtime," continued Kiefer.  "We had five or six good opportunities to put the game away.  As long as we keep creating those kinds of chances, we'll be alright." The Bulls were out-shot 13-8 in the match but Restrepo tallied four saves to keep any further damage from being done.  The tie was the first of the year for FAU, who move to 4-6-1 overall. The match marks the last non-conference opponent the Bulls will see this year.  They will battle only BIG EAST Red Division foes from this point on, with four of the six remaining regular season matches at home. USF now returns home to Tampa to face Red Division leader Villanova on Fri., Oct. 12 at 8 p.m.

Farrier scores 5th of the season
southernowls.com

Senior forward Shane Ogilvie (Regina, Saskatchewan) scored a tie-breaking goal with 6:25 remaining in regulation to lead the Southern Connecticut State University men’s soccer team to a 2-1 victory over New Haven in non-conference action at Jess Dow Field on Tuesday night. SCSU’s fourth consecutive victory increased their unbeaten streak to seven games and improved their record to 9-2-3. With the loss, New Haven falls to 5-8-0. The two clubs played a scoreless first half with SCSU controlling much of the play. The Owls held a 9-5 shots advantage and a 4-1 edge in corner kicks over the opening 45 minutes. The two teams came out of the gate playing hard, as they combined for 15 fouls in the first half. New Haven opened the scoring just 2:21 into the second half. Four Chargers huddled around the ball on a free kick about 30 yards from the goal line and on the left side of the field. Jelani Joslyn poked the ball between the legs Nick Pezzente. On the other side of Pezzente, Jessey Fernandez took one touch and then struck the ball. His shot narrowly eluded the grasp of SCSU senior goalkeeper Brendan Lawless (Orleans, Mass.) bounced off the left goal post and then rolled across the line to give New Haven a 1-0 lead.

The Owls would strike for the equalizer just 3:38 later. Junior midfielder Djordje Jankovic (Sabac, Serbia) served up his team-leading seventh assist of the season when he hit a corner kick from the right side. The ball found junior defender Ancil Farrier (Los Bajos, Trinidad) inside the six-yard box in front of the New Haven net. Farrier struck the ball home for his fifth goal of the season. Ogilvie would then notch the game-winner amidst a scramble in front of the net in the 84th minute. Freshman midfielder Brandin McClay (East Taunton, Mass.) recorded the assist on Ogilvie’s fifth goal of the season. Lawless made one save in net to earn the victory for SCSU. James Hilaire made five saves in front of the New Haven goal in defeat. The Owls return to action on Saturday, October 13 when they host Bryant in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. The match will be SCSU’s final home game of the regular season. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Jess Dow Field in New Haven, Conn.

Athlete of the Week: Abiola Sandy
By: Pete Schramm (BG News)

Posted: 10/18/07

As one of only three seniors on a very young BG men's soccer team this year, Abiola Sandy has taken the initiative to step into a leadership role and lead by example.

Sandy, an accounting major, has scored a team-high four goals this season eclipsing his previous total of three over his first three years at BGSU.

He also earned a spot as a team captain this year, and says he embraces the role and the opportunity to set an example for the younger members of the team both on and off the field.

"I always try and do the right things," he said. "There's always people watching me, like the freshmen and the other guys."

"Anything I do from my social life to my grades and everything, I always try to be responsible just so I can be a good leader for the guys and give them good advice. I just try to help out the freshmen and help them be comfortable and enjoy their first year of college."

Sandy's passion for the game comes from a childhood growing up in Trinidad and Tobago where soccer is almost all he knew.

"I have been playing it since I was four," he said. "I have been playing it for so long, I just love it."

Last year, Sandy's skill as a player was elite enough to earn him a spot on his country's U-20 national team.

His ride as a soccer player at BG, however, has been a bit of a tougher story at times.

When Sandy first arrived on campus as a freshman he was eager to start playing for the team, but received little direction from the older players.

"My first three years, I wasn't as confident as I am right now, and the players that I played with didn't make me feel as though I could be myself," he said.

"[This year] I can just be me, and everyone is fine with it. It's helped my confidence to know that I can do just whatever I want to do."

Despite some difficult seasons, Sandy's passion for the game still shines through.

He says when he steps on the field, he tries to bring a spark to his team and set a good example.

"[I try] to be that guy to pump everyone up before the game," he said. "I just have to [lead] by example. I try to win every ball, be precise with my passes, be calm, be cool and make good decisions."

So far this year, Sandy's positive attitude and extra effort have shown as he leads the team in goals.

Despite his personal success, Sandy holds himself to a high standard and says he is not quite satisfied.

"I think I can do a lot better," he said.

"I don't feel like I've played my personal best yet. "I think it's long overdue, and hopefully I can show it to them."

With only four regular season games left before the Mid-American Conference Tournament, Sandy sees the season, as well as his career at BGSU, starting to wind down.

He knows, however, this is the time in which focusing is most crucial because it isn't too late to fulfill the team's No. 1 goal.

"Win the conference," he said. "Win the [MAC] Championship, and qualify into the [NCAA] Tournament."

While that lofty goal still hangs in the balance, one thing is for sure: This year's soccer team has a leader whose positive impact will be felt for years to come.
