Carlos Edwards and Andy Cole will return from injury in Sunderland's reserves game against Wolviston tonight.

Roy Keane has confirmed that he plans to give each a 60-minute run-out in the Newton Moor Durham County Challenge Cup game at the Eppleton CW ground in Hetton (7.30pm).

Cole is yet to feature for Sunderland after suffering a calf injury early in his Black Cats career, while Edwards has been sidelined with a hamstring injury since the first week of the campaign.

If all goes well, they have an outside chance of featuring in Saturday's Wear-Tyne derby at the Stadium of Light.

Keane said: "Carlos and Coley will look to have an hour, it's a chance for them to get a run-out. If they get through it unscathed, maybe they can feature on Saturday, we'll wait and see."

Dean Whitehead is back in training but he is not yet ready for a full-scale game. The skipper could make his comeback when Sunderland go to Falkirk for a testimonial game a week on Thursday.

*Tonight's fixture is a second-round tie and must be decided on the night. Wolviston play in the Wearside League.

I can't wait for Carlos to get back into the side.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he wont suffer any more setbacks.

Let's pray that he is back to good health.  He will certainly make a big difference in the team as will Andy Cole.

Sunderland Reserves 8 Wolviston 0

Carlos Edwards and Andy Cole handed Sunderland a pre-derby boost by playing in their reserves win over Wolviston.

Both were on the scoresheet in the Newton Moor Durham County Challenge Cup rout at the Eppleton CW ground in Hetton.

But more importantly for the Black Cats, they played for an hour as they come back from injury.

Edwards has been sidelined since the opening week of the season with hamstring problems while Cole is yet to feature for Sunderland after hurting his calf in a reserves game shortly afetr joining the club in August.

Both now have an outside chance of featuring in Sunderland's game against Newcastle at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.

Edwards opened the scoring in the 10th minute from close range after Nathan Luscombe's shot was blocked Wolviston keeper Jamie Lawrence who had a good game.

It was 2-0 in the 12th minute. Centre-back Peter Hartley climbed well to plant a header into the roof of the net from Luscombe's corner.

Cole was involved in Sunderland's third in the 18th minute, cushioning a pass to Martyn Waghorn who lifted a shot over the keeper.

In the 20th minute, Waghorn got his second and the Black Cats' fourth, making the most of a mistake by Lawrence to slot a shot into an empty goal.

Edwards should have got a second in the 27th minute, slicing a shot wide after a dummy by Cole, and the right-winger forced Lawrence into action in the 28th minute with a stinging right-foot shot from 25 yards.

Luscombe scored a great goal in the 40th minute, skipping past his marker before firing a thunderous left-foot shot into the roof of the net.

Right on half-time, Lawrence made a good one-handed save to keep out Billy Dennehy's curling free-kick.

Cole made it 6-0 in the 47th minute from 10 yards after being teed up by Edwards. It came after good work down the left by Waghorn.

Lawrence made his second top-class save of the game in the 50th minute, blocking Edwards' shot after a cross by Dennehy.

Gavin Donoghue was the second central defender to get in on the act in the 52nd minute, crashing a right-foot shot into the top corner from 25 yards.

And substitute David Dowson completed the romp late in the game.

Sunderland: Carson, Kay, Donoghue, Hartley, Dennehy, Edwards (Weir 60), Chandler, Colback (Richardson 60), Luscombe, Cole (Dowson 60), Waghorn.

Wolviston: Lawrence, Farrel, Gillespie, Tpotohopolous, Burke, Robinson, Pickover, Paul, French, Foreman, Kilpatrick.

Attendance: 879.
