Former attorney general and MP for Tabaquite Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj is scoffing at PM Patrick Manning’s decision to re-appoint Martin Joseph as Minister of National Security for a second term.
Maharaj, in a telephone interview yesterday, said in light of the crime situation facing the country, the re-appointment was an indication that “Mr Manning is not concerned with the safety and security of the people in T&T.”
He said Joseph had failed in his capacity and that “the country will continue with the scourge of kidnappings, murders and violence.”
Not proper choice
Regarding the appointment of Bridgid Annisette-George as Attorney General, Maharaj said an AG was supposed “to be distinguished in the practice of law, and a person that has gained the confidence of the people to be able to perform their duties in an efficient manner.”
Maharaj claimed further that the last AG, John Jeremie, as well as the present AG, were not proper choices.
He felt the AG could not rise to the occasion.
Annisette-George, who said yesterday she had had a private practice specialising in civil and matrimonial law, conveyancing and probate, told reporters:
“It is a very different work to what I’m accustomed to.”
She admitted that it would be challenging, but she was prepared to do her best.
Maharaj: Woodford Square swearing-in a breach
Maharaj is also claiming that the swearing-in of PM Manning in Woodford Square on Wednesday was a breach of the constitution.
Maharaj indicated that the constitution dictated that the PM and the AG should be sworn in at the same time, as Manning alone could “not constitute a cabinet.”
“T&T has been constitutionally robbed for a few hours,” he added.
