Bermuda Close to Naming Coach

Keith Tucker, who was fired by Howard University in January after 26 seasons, is in final negotiations to become head coach of Bermuda's national team, sources said today. Tucker is a native of Bermuda who returned to live there this year. Bermuda will enter the early stage of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying next year. The soccer association is also in search of a technical director.

The last time the U.S. team played Bermuda was in February 1991: Bermuda 1, USA 0. As I recall, that was Bob Gansler's final game in charge of the American squad. The U.S. lineup was Meola; Agoos, Balboa, Banks, Dayak; Krumpe, Dufrene, Kinnear, Murray; Wynalda, Vermes

BFA may name new interim coach by next week

By Stephen Wright

The Bermuda Football Association plans to unveil a new caretaker coach early next week and is promising Kenny Thompson's successor an opportunity to stake a claim for the hot-seat.

Thompson's shock resignation from his post last week came just 24 hours after The Royal Gazette exclusively revealed New England Revs assistant Paul Mariner and former Reggae Boyz boss Rene Simoes had appeared on the BFA's list of applicants for the technical director's job.

Conscious of the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifiers looming ever closer, the BFA has wasted no time in reacting to Thompson's departure, moving swiftly to scour for a successor.

They have made assurances the new incumbent will given "carte blanche" over all team affairs, and could be in charge of two unconfirmed international friendly matches later this month against Cocacaf region opposition.

"By next week an announcement could be made regarding a new caretaker manager," said technical committee chairman Mark Trott. "He will perform the same role vacated by Kenny Thompson and will be given carte blanche in terms of team selection.

"Whoever comes in will rightly expect that and will have an opportunity to make the role permanent."

Part of the technical director's mandate will involve the hiring of coaches at all levels, including the national team boss. The BFA would ideally like to have the new man onboard before any friendly fixtures, so to provide an opportunity for him to cast a critical gaze over the national team early on in his stewardship.

"We hope to be in a position to appoint the technical director as soon as possible and if he's on board before any friendly games we would like him to be involved," Trott said. "Friendly fixtures would provide him with an ideal opportunity to observe the national team and make assessments."

Just a few months prior to his resignation Thompson voiced his frustration at the lack of friendly dates booked in the diary, fearing the hunt for a technical director had taken precedence in the BFA's corridors of power.

But Trott stressed the search had not interfered with qualifying preparations. "The technical committee is in the midst of organising friendly matches for the national team," he said. "We are currently in discussions with nations in the Concacaf region and are awaiting confirmation. Talks have been positive and we are looking to have two friendly dates finalised before December if possible.

"Ideally we want to organise a home and away leg, similar to the World Cup qualifying format."

Thompson tendered his resignation from the post he had held for the past eight months for undisclosed reasons, though it is common knowledge the Somerset Eagles player/coach did not always see eye-to-eye with the BFA hierarchy over the running of the domestic game.

The preliminary 2010 FIFA World Cup draw is to be made in Durban, South Africa, on November 25.

Simoes has denied having applied for this position. Some sources mention John Barnes as a candidate.

BFA name Tucker as new coach

By Colin Thompson

Keith Tucker has been given the reins of the senior national football team and will now oversee the Island's 2010 World Cup qualifying bid that kicks off next year.

Bermuda Football Association (BFA) technical committee chairman Mark Trott confirmed yesterday that the former Howard University coach — who has also applied for the association's technical director's post — has agreed to the terms of a one-year deal that will see him come onboard as interim senior national team football coach.

Tucker became a household name at Howard, where he coached for 26 years, after taking the collegiate team all the way to the 1988 NCAA championship and also comes highly rated by Trott and the rest of his technical committee members. "We looked at the available candidates and Keith, who has the qualifications, was more than happy to take the job," Trott said. "In principle it was agreed to (yesterday) but we actually made a formal decision yesterday (Thursday)."

Tucker is one of only two Bermudian coaches that applied for the BFA technical director's position, a position that will pay a $125,000 per year salary, with former Alabama football academy director Richard Todd being the other.

"Obviously Keith is linked to the technical director's appointment but, as we did with the previous coaches, we are looking to bring him on for a year. That's the goal right now; get him in charge to oversee our World Cup campaign. And his qualifications more than met the criteria," Trott said.

Tucker, who succeeded Kenny Thompson as interim national coach, will also oversee a series of proposed World Cup warm-ups possibly as early as next month.

"We're working on something more fruitful. What we have set up will be more beneficial with a group of matches planned before New Year," Trott told The Royal Gazette.

Thompson quit the post last month after becoming disgruntled with a senior national programme that has remained stagnant for the past eight months despite Government pumping millions into the national sport.

"Now we have the money but we are operating as if we don't have any by not arranging any matches ahead of time," Thompson argued.

But in response to Thompson's outburst, Trott said: "It's understandable coaches want to play games. On many occasions we've arranged fixtures only for the other nation to come back and to us and change the financial arrangement.

"Everyone is aware we've received a substantial Government grant and some nations less fortunate probably think we can afford to pick up the entire bill. But we are now at stage when we're very close to making an announcement regarding a programme of international friendly matches
."

The following players have been invited to train under the newly appointed senior national team coach, while a meeting has been set aside for Monday at the National Sports Centre's Northern Pavilion beginning at 5.30 p.m. sharp.

Proposed senior training squad: Jay Smith, Omar Shakir, Corey Dowling, Kevin Richards, Johnny Ball, Blenn Bean, Chris Furbert, Cecoy Robinson, Dennis Russell, Kentine Lewis, Jason Williams, Ralph Bean jr, Kofi Dill, Keith Jennings, Jemeiko Jennings, Devaughn Degraff, Jahmah Samuels, Conneko Trott, Chae Simmons, Jahmarley Samuels, Timmy Figureido, Jelani Scott, Jabrel Tucker, Darius Cox, Joshua Butterfield, Kijuan Franks, Kwame Steede, Tumani Steede, Domico Coddington, Ajani Gibbons, Raymond Beach, Tokia Russell, Dennis Zuill, Ernest Signor, Micheal Parsons, Seion Darrell, Heys Wolfe, Lloyd Holder, Lashun Dill, Joseph Butterfield, Ryan Purnell, Aljame Zuill, Jonathan Bean, Henry Santucci, Sean Brangman, Nigel Burgess, Jermaine Dill, Kamen Tucker, Khano Smith, Reginald Thompson-Lambe, Jason Davis, Kris Frick, Tyrell Burgess, Keishen Bean, Tuarean Manders, Antonio Lowe, McQuinn Burch, Jacqi Simons, Jahnai Raynor, Logan Alexander, Robert Richardson, Shayne Hollis, Jared Peniston, Stephen Astwood, Damon Ming, John Barry Nusum.

Khano Smith will probably start today in the MLS Cup match up: NE v Houston

Since they may be the team we face ...  might as well keep track

Tucker's favoured formation 4-3-3 or 4-5-1

http://www.royalgazette.com/siftology.royalgazette/Article/article.jsp?articleId=7d7bf3730030006&sectionId=70

Excerpt:

Among those who have whetted Tucker's appetite in training are Hogges' franchise duo Stephen Astwood and Damon Ming, as well as skipper Kwame Steede. Tucker added he was also familiar with former Howard University trio Jason Williams, Nigel Burgess and Omar Shakir.

"Although the national team hasn't played for a while the majority of those involved in the programme have been playing regularly with Bermuda Hogges — you can tell they are used to playing together," said Tucker whose favoured formation is 4-3-3 or 4-5-1.

"I hadn't seen Stevie Astwood up close before and I've been very impressed. He's an excellent goalscorer, and there's little Damon Ming and I still don't know why he hasn't been picked up by an English club.

"He's very quick and under my programme I would like him making a lot of runs inside, not just down the wing.
There's also Kwame Steede who is a very intelligent player - these guys are capable of hurting defences."

Tucker revealed both 'keepers Williams and Burgess had taken to wearing their Howard University jerseys during training almost as a reminder to their coach of their previous connection.

"I'm familiar with Jason Williams and Nigel Burgess from their time at Howard. They both keep wearing their Howard jerseys to training to make sure I don't forget! I've been impressed with all three of our 'keepers.

"Then there's Omar Shakir who was a striker back then but has been converted into defender. I saw him play for the Hogges and he's very strong has a maturity about him."
