Windies x South Africa - Test 2
« on: January 01, 2008, 04:25:53 PM »
First of all, Happy New Year to all, and your families.

I still am in disbelief over what transpired in the first test, but
what it has done is raise my expectations considerably for what
should happen in this test.

Did anyone read Coziers article in today's Express?

http://www.trinidadexpress.com/index.pl/article_sports?id=161257431

As the headline reads, 'Gayle, the key to West Indies transformation'.

Which leads me to think, and ask, was Lara that much of a cancer?

Anyway, test 2 starts @ 3:30A EST, and I cannot wait.
I hope we play with the same discipline and determination, 'cause the
South Africans will not be taking us lightly this go around, right?

Make us proud once more Windies!

One change, Lewis in for Sammy.

Gayle looks to be having more hamstring troubles.

And the big surprise, Windies won the toss, and
decided to bat on a very overcast morning in
Cape Town.

At lunch 83 for 3, with Chanders (surprise surprise)
and Samuels at the wicket.

No turn in the wicket.

How about Bravo bowling 24 overs on the trot?
Windies need an early wicket in the morning to even things
out, if not SA could build a sizable lead.

Jere's a very nice piece on Chanders.

Well to be fair, South Africa has a stronger and more experienced lower order than the West Indies does. Having said that, it is heartening that our bowlers were able to restrict South Africa to 321 all out after starting the day on 218 for 5. The key now is for our batsmen to erase the seventy-eight run first-innings deficit without too much drama. That should be the first step. Step two would be to methodically building up a sizeable target for the South Africans to chase. This is where the test match is going to be won or lost. I think that this team finally is exhibiting a different attitude and it is about time.

Let's wait and see what happens.

Score now gone to 44 without loss.

I was out for a while.  Anybody know why Ramdim open with Ganga ?

Ramdim showing a lil skills, cause he owe we a big score now.  He doen take the lead from Ganga.  I feel Ganga better off just trying to be agressive and beat the bowling.  When he playing for T&T he beating the island bowling with agression, but in WI he trying to build innings and still going out cheaply.

According to Ranatunga...go out with bats blazing man !

Flecking 60 for 2 wickets dred

So much for Ramdin and de big score...a semi-decent 32 though...off 79 balls
Ganga still labouring on 15, he face the same amount of balls as Ramdin to get that 15 runs

Morton gone for 1.  The commentator say he follow the ball outside off stump, like a moth to a flame.

We doing real good......blazing guns at 8/3 ;D.  I really hope these fellas could somehow find away to bat for the whole day tomorrow. If we lose another wicket, especially chanders before the day is done, then you could pretty much put the nail in the coffin for this match.

We 15/4 now and here comes Gayle with a runner. This hurts to watch. :'(

Well congrats to South Africa and tough luck to the West Indies. It seems as if, to borrow from baseball commentary parlance, there are "dead spots" in our batting lineup, namely Morton and to a certain extent, Ganga. Morton especially is simply not pulling his weight. He's almost an automatic wicket for opposing teams. Ganga, although certainly not through lack of effort, still seems to be very limited in his ability to cope with aggressive bowling. Ramdin, while he is able to get decent scores in the thirties and forties, needs to be able to convert these scores into big hundreds. This will probably come with time and experience. These are some of the major factors, along with Gayle's injury, that led to our defeat in this test match.

Having said all this, it is gratifying that this team did not captulate in this test match as meekly as it has done in the recent past. At least the guys showed some mettle and backbone. The performance from our lower order in the second innings was also heartening. Hopefully, our team is not too discouraged by this defeat and will be able to rebound mentally for the series decider.

We played with 9.5 men and most of dem gave everything.  I disagree that Ganga is not playing well.  He is the anchor and we are asking him to open which is no longer his preferred option and has not been for years.  Yuh really want to drop Ganga and bring in who?  Ganga making more runs than Bravo and Ramdin so far.  Morton did not have a good second Test and Samuels was so so.  Did "Raw" Lewis play?  ;D
