Newcastle silly. 6 managers in the last how many years. STEUPS. Newcastle overestimate their potential. They were safe from relegation. They coulda let Big Sam ride out teh year and look at what plans there were for restructuring in the summer.

Who are they going to get now ? What is their target to achieve for the year?  How many managers have to 'fail' to meet the unrealistic standards set by the fans and the board before they realise the limits of their team?!

Allardyce parts company with Newcastle United

Newcastle United have parted company with manager Sam Allardyce, the club have confirmed.

The former Bolton boss spent just eight months in the job after being appointed by Freddy Shepherd at the end of last season.

But while new owner Mike Ashley stood by the 53-year-old after his £134m summer takeover of the club, rumours of his demise persistently circled St James' Park as the Geordies slumped into the bottom half of the Premier League despite a promising start to the campaign.

Allardyce launched his tenure in fine style with a 3-1 victory at former club Bolton Wanderers on the opening day of the season and went unbeaten for five games.

But a dreadful 1-0 defeat at struggling Derby County on September 17 set the alarm bells ringing and more recently, abject defeats at home to Liverpool and away at Wigan seem to have sealed his fate.

Every time Newcastle failed to produce results, or much attacking intent on the road, Mike Ashley, who often watched the matches from the stands, was surrounded by fans calling for Big Sam's head.

And all the while, the shadow of Alan Shearer loomed large with many supporters telling Ashley their prodigal son was the only man who could reverse the club's fortune.

The former England skipper is out of the country at the moment but speculation is sure to reach fever pitch in the coming days as to whether he will take the job. He is already 4-6 with the bookies to get the job.

Jose Mourinho's name has also been mentioned in recent days on Tyneside, though that may be more in hope than expectation.

Allardyce took training as usual on Wednesday morning and held his normal press conference in the afternoon, rebuffing claims that Steven Taylor and Obafemi Martins were the subject of bids from rival Premier League clubs.

An official statement on the club's website said: 'Newcastle United have today parted company with Sam Allardyce as its Manager with immediate effect.

'This decision has been reached by mutual consent.'

Newcastle United Chairman Chris Mort said: 'Mike and I would like to place on record our thanks for Sam's efforts and wish him well for the future.

'A new manager has not yet been appointed at Newcastle United. We will make a further announcement on the managerial position when appropriate.

Sam Allardyce said: 'I am disappointed to be leaving Newcastle United but I wish the club all the best for the remainder of the season and for the future.'

First team coach Nigel Pearson will take charge of Saturday's game at Manchester United.'

Allardyce spent just 24 games as Toon boss, but the Magpies had only won one game in the last six.

Woeful displays at home to Liverpool and away at Wigan had the loyal Toon Army voicing their disquiet, but after avoiding defeat at Stoke in the FA Cup third round on Sunday it appeared Allardyce had weathered the storm.

And many will question the time of this sacking and the way it was handled with Big Sam apparently unaware of the move up until around 5pm this evening.

Big Sam is the sixth manager to be sacked since Kevin Keegan's triumphant reign ended in January

Premier League - Redknapp rejects Newcastle job

Eurosport - Sat, 12 Jan 11:28:00 2008

Harry Redknapp plans to stay as manager of Portsmouth after rejecting a possible move to replace Sam Allardyce at Newcastle.

Redknapp admitted he had been offered a "terrific opportunity" to take over from Allardyce at Newcastle but insisted he had no intention of leaving Portsmouth.

The Pompey boss had been expected to take the reins at St James' Park but after holding talks with the Magpies he decided he could not abandon the south coast club - or the players he has signed.

His decision leaves Newcastle in turmoil as they look to reassess their options, but Redknapp is now looking forward to a stable future at Fratton Park.

"I'm happy - this is a club I feel comfortable at. I have a fantastic relationship with the fans, a fantastic relationship with the owner and with Peter (Storrie, chief executive," he said.

"The players I've brought to the club, I've sold Portsmouth to them and to walk away having brought them here, when the club is doing so well, wouldn't be right."

But the 60-year-old concedes the offer from Newcastle was both flattering and tempting.

"I had a great offer from them and to be offered the chance at a fantastic club like Newcastle was a terrific opportunity for me but at the end of it I couldn't do it," told Sky Sports News.

"I had no intention of leaving here. The job now is to take this club forward. To walk away is not the right thing to do."

Redknapp had been the favourite to take over from Allardyce and he held talks with the Tyneside club on Friday night.

"Harry spoke to Newcastle and it was a great opportunity for him," Portsmouth chief executive Peter Storrie said.

After considering the move overnight, Redknapp arrived at Pompey's Eastleigh training ground this morning - the team are due to depart for the north-east to play Sunderland tomorrow - and told reporters he was staying with the club.

"He went away and slept on it then we met first thing in the morning at the training ground and he told me he wanted to stay," Storrie said.

"We are absolutely delighted. We've been in lengthy discussions with Harry.

"It speaks volumes about his desire to see Pompey succeed that he wants to stay here.

"Harry feels that there is still a job to do here."

Tyneside capacity is in excess of 50,000, always sold out, but as spidey says that's irrelevant

Manutd- 1 manager, 20 yrs- 19 trophies. Newcastle- 10 managers in the same time frame, an trophy  empty cabinet. You're not big just because you think you are.

One of the reasons Newcastle has so much support is that they're the only football team in town.  This is also why there's so much media focus as well.....there's nothing else for them to focus on.
