College soccer's best Division I Seniors invited to participate in 2008 adidas MLS Player Combine
Major League Soccer Communications

Major League Soccer today announced the initial list of 54 college seniors from 33 Division I schools who have been invited to participate in the 2008 adidas MLS Player Combine. The annual player combine will be held at Lockhart Stadium in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Jan. 11-15, 2008.

The coaching and management staffs of all 14 MLS teams will be in attendance to scout talent at the 2008 adidas MLS Player Combine, which concludes three days before the 2008 MLS SuperDraft. The 2008 MLS SuperDraft will be held on Friday, Jan. 18, 2008 in Baltimore, Md.

The list of invitees is highlighted by seven seniors who are semifinalists for the 2007 Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy, NCAA soccer's equivalent of the Heisman Trophy. Leading the way is the 2006 award winner Joseph Lapira (Notre Dame), and Andy Iro (UC Santa Barbara), Julius James (University of Connecticut), Stephen King (University of Maryland), Peter Lowry (Santa Clara), Julian Valentin (Wake Forest University) and Michael Videira (Duke University). The 2007 MAC Hermann Trophy finalists will be announced on Dec. 14, 2007 and the winner is announced on Jan. 11, 2008.

The initial list of players for this year's combine was determined by a select panel of Division I college coaches representing all conferences who nominated and voted for players in conjunction with MLS coaches. Youth players from the Generation adidas program will join additional collegiate players from NCAA Division II and III schools, NAIA schools and Division I alternates to finalize the 2008 adidas Player Combine. These players will be announced in the upcoming weeks.

The 2008 adidas MLS Player Combine will separate all players into four teams and feature two games per day at Lockhart Stadium on Jan. 12, 13, and 15. Each team will be led by an experienced Division I coach and will be assigned a youth coach, to be named at a later date. Former MLS coach and current assistant head coach at Duke University Mike Jeffries has been selected to coach Team Predator PowerServe. Ed Kelly, head coach at Boston College for the past 20 seasons, will coach Team adiTunit. Bobby Muuss, in his first season as the head coach at Denver University after six years as the top assistant coach at Wake Forest University, will lead Team adiPure. Tim Lenahan, head coach of Northwestern University has been chosen to coach Team Trofeo.

The Sheraton Yankee Trader Hotel will serve as the official headquarters of the adidas MLS Player Combine and the host hotel for players and coaching staffs.

Following are the names of the 54 players selected, broken down by position and by school:

I hope both players shine at the combine. They both have what it takes to make it at the next level. Good luck to them

Trini defender listed as top prospect for MLS draft
« Reply #2 on: December 28, 2007, 07:16:04 AM »
From Soccernet:

1. Julius James, Connecticut -- Two years ago, a former MLS assistant described James as a "beast" and told me he was MLS-ready. James is the complete package of speed, skill, strength and talent who can start in MLS from day one. The Trinidadian tops his résumé with a remarkable three Big East Defensive Player of the Year awards. James is the only player in UConn history to be named a first team All-American twice. The two-time Hermann Trophy semifinalist should have been signed a couple of years ago; now MLS almost certainly will have to sign him in advance of the draft to keep him from going to Europe.

Is there any way that James would qualify for a work permit to play in England?

Seems very doubtful.

Good question as most Europe-bound Trinis head to the UK..but there's more to Europe than England. Most recently we've had players head to Belgium, Holland and Hungary. Portugal was a relatively popular destination in the past. Don't know what Julius' citizenship situation is..but if he's good enough and has a good agent, England will be just one of a few options in Europe. And of course MLS could be a very good option as well

Having a college degree can assist in getting authorization to work in the UK.
He should probably stay in the MLS however he has the confidence to perform in american soccer and his reputation is already made.

That is have the success

If he goes UK he will have to prove himself from day one as a 20 something year old and in most cases will get fight down

This is what happen to Rahim and Sancho.

After playing college you too old to go and "Develop" in theUK beeter to take a chance to become an MLS star and then go over with some pedgree.

Look at Ryan Nelson he was a decent MLS player now he is the captain of black burn and the first name on the team sheet.

James should stay in america

Ah geh shake there while Tallman was re-aligning this thread ... lost my comment in de mix it didn't send ... Whappen dey? Had to retype de 5 lines ...

This decison will work itself out based on viable options, but I would prefer to see him outside the US. My opinion might be different if he were an American player.

Interesting that Valentin is listed outside the Top 10 in spite of being a Herman semifinalist.

If the man get so much recognition as a defender, he hadda be ready for the national team.
Why he didn't get a chance again? Wasn't he in that group with Noreiga and Makan Hislop when we were running the rule over younger defenders before the world cup?

Julius was part of de camp dat Beenhakker had in Ft. Lauderdale in Feb 2006. He was also invited by Rijsbergen to be part of a camp dat was held in South Carolina in Nov 2006, but he did not participate; all the news said was that he was unavailable.

Wasn't he invited to be a part of the Gold Cup training camp as well? I remember Morvantman posting something to de effect of Anton Corneal not liking him for some reason and he was not selected for the final squad. Who is interim head coach again? :-\

I find he lil short myself, prolly 5' 8", I posted a picture of him and MorvantMan once if somebody care to dig it up.
I seen him play at the camp in FLL and watched a game on FSC, some players find their level in College and strugle beyound.  Im hoping he surprises me, i think he should start off in the MLS.
