Germany's Fanz to coach Cuba free of charge

HAVANA, Feb 4 (Reuters) - Cuba will not pay their new soccer coach, Reinhold Fanz of Germany, as he takes on the daunting task of leading them to the 2010 World Cup finals.

The Cuban Soccer Association said on Monday Fanz was loaned by German lower-league side Bonner SC. Cuba will only cover his living and travel expenses.

Fanz, 54, will start training Cuba in March. The former Fortuna Dusseldorf player has had spells coaching Bundesliga clubs Hannover 96 and Eintracht Frankfurt, but has never before coached a national team.

Cuba is 71 in the FIFA rankings and has not reached the World Cup finals since 1938, when it was ousted 8-0 by Sweden in the quarterfinals.

"Nothing is impossible," Cuban Soccer Association president Luis Hernandez said of the team's prospects at a news conference, as they defeated Haiti 4-0 in a friendly match.

Cuba is as good as Trinidad and Tobago, which qualified for the last World Cup, Hernandez said.

"This has to be our opportunity," he said.

Fanz will take the Cuban team to train in Germany and Austria later this spring.

Past Cuban coaches included a North Korean, a Hungarian and a Peruvian. (Reporting by Esteban Israel, editing by Alan Elsner)

Futbol is one of the nuts they haven't been able to crack comprehensively. I wish them well.

In years to come, from a diaspora perspective, it could get interesting for them in terms of attracting talent from overseas. Players of Cuban origin are scattered in some key locations.

ahh ahh,the cubans do well in soccer also,Historically they were the first from the Caribbean and Haiti
doing so well last year was due to the cuban Coach they had,the cubans are more decipline than jamaicans, hatians and trinidadians.

Anyhow assylum seeker no doubt two Caribbean team will make the Hex Cuba & Haiti, jamaica and Trinidad have potential.Group 3 Panama/El-salvador,Costa rica,Guyana/surinam and Haiti/netherlands antilles is a easier group. With all my heart I think the formation of this group hold surprises.Either Grenada going to upset costa rica or Netherlands antilles upset Haiti do not think I have a bad mind
but Grenada beat jamaica 2 love two years ago and Netherlands antilles is a sleeper!!!
for Guyana/surinam that game is a toss up.

we as fanz keep underestimating Dutch football and eventhough the Netherland antilles may seem small
alot of there players are link to holland just like martinique/gudeloupe to france.

Group 3

Panama/el salvador maybe panama
Guyana/surinam toss up
Costa Rica/ Grenada toss up
Haiti/ dutch antilles toss up

This Group hold alot of surprizes
