Vranes takes charge of T&T Olympic team.
By Shaun Fuentes (TTFA).

Preparations begin for Olympic qualifiers

The Trinidad and Tobago Football Association will on Wednesday morning commence preparation of a squad of invited players for the upcoming Caribbean Football Union Leg of the 2016 Men’s Olympic qualifiers which begins in early August.

The TTFA today wishes to announce that  Zoran Vranes will serve as head coach of the National Under 23 team. Vranes will oversee the preparation of the team for its opening qualifying round in Puerto Rico from June 22nd. He will also oversee preparation of the team to represent this country at the Pan American Games in Canada in July.

The Caribbean Football Union will announce T&T's group for the opening round of the Olympic qualifiers in due course. The top two teams from the Caribbean will advance to the CONCACAF Final Olympic qualifying round which takes place in the United States between October 1st to 15th this year.

CONCACAF will  qualify two teams for the Rio 2016 Olympics.  The third-placed team in CONCACAF will advance to the CONCACAF–CONMEBOL play-off where they will play against a representative from CONMEBOL, which will be the Colombia, the 2015 South American Youth Football Championship runner-up

Included in Vranes’ squad are several players from the recent T&T Under 20 team, other members from the T&T Pro  League and six US-based players.

Among the names are North East Stars midfielder Neveal Hackshaw, Shannon Gomez and Jomal Williams who made their senior international debut against Panama last month, Martieon Watson, Brendon Creed. Josiah Trimmingham, Levi Garcia, Akeem Garcia, Kadeem Corbin, Kevon Goddard, Jabari Mitchell, Aikim Andrews and Alvin Jones, another member of the T&T Senior team.

Vranes, delighted to be back at the helm of a national team, said the Olympic qualification is sure to be a challenging one.

“First of all, I am very happy to be back working with a national team. I’ve had some great experiences working with national teams of Trinidad and Tobago and this now a continuation as I try to have a positive input. Of course we went to the Under 20 World Cup in Egypt in 2009 and I was the coach of that team with players like Kevin Molino, Akeem Adams and Sheldon Bateau and now we have a chance to go to Brazil for the Olympics in 2016,” Vranes told TTFA Media.

“But this is going to be a difficult task now. We are a little bit behind time but okay, this is not something we cannot overcome. I think the qualification is more challenging than the World Cup because only two teams from CONCACAF will qualify directly. We have a lot of work to do but I think there are players with a lot of potential and experience in the squad now and we will use everything we have to make it happen for us,” he added.

“Many of these players I have worked with and observed in the Pro League and this is also an opportunity to prepare the players knocking on the door for the Senior team and I know they will be quite eager to do well in the Olympic team,” Vranes continued.

Vranes is also a former T&T Senior Team head coach and assistant coach. The T&T team will train at 8am on Wednesday at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

Vranes may not see many of these boys this week as clubs have important games this weekend.

Vranes takes over T&T Olympic team; but disappointed with TTFA timeline
By Lasana Liburd (Wired868.com)

Former Central FC head coach Zoran Vranes is set to return to the international arena after agreeing to take charge of the Trinidad and Tobago National Under-23 Team for their Rio 2016 Olympics qualifying campaign.
Vranes expects to be assisted by former Trinidad and Tobago international Reynold Carrington, who recently resigned his post as Point Fortin Civic head coach, ex-St Ann’s Rangers coach Gilbert Bateau and Rangers goalkeeping coach Nigel Neverson.
However, Vranes, who steered Trinidad and Tobago to the Egypt 2009 World Youth Cup, cautioned fans to be realistic about the journey ahead. And the Yugoslavia-born coach admitted he might not have accepted the job if he was aware of the time frame before the squad’s first competitive assignment.
The Under-23 “Soca Warriors” will start their campaign on 22 June 2015 in a Caribbean group in Puerto Rico. But Vranes claimed he was initially told that their Olympic qualifiers would start in August.
“If I knew (earlier) our qualifiers started in June, I would not have accepted,” Vranes told Wired868. “I had information that it was in August. I have a month to prepare the team but I will not say that we have no chance...
“We made plans for August and tomorrow is the first day of training. But I was told today that (the Olympic qualifiers will start in) June. Now, I have to sit down to make new plans.”
Ironically, Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) president Raymond Tim Kee is a member of CONCACAF’s Associated Championships Committee which is mandated to: “organise the associated competitions and Olympic Football Tournaments in compliance with the provisions of the regulations applicable to these tournaments.”
Tim Kee’s presumed inside knowledge of the 2016 Olympic qualifying series seems to have been of little assistance to the current Under-23 squad.
Vranes conceded that the Olympic race is a devilishly difficult one, even in the best of circumstances for Trinidad and Tobago. It remains the only global competition that a men’s national team has never qualified for.
“To go to the Olympics is more difficult than to go to the World Cup because only two CONCACAF teams will go,” said Vranes. “Also, the Under-23 guys in Mexico, the United States, Costa Rica and so on are all professionals. We are behind them.
“If we prepare very well, we will compete (and) you never know. Football is football. But it is very tough. That is reality. But I have nice footballers and I will work as hard as I can.”
CONCACAF has just two automatic spots for the 2016 Olympic Games while the third placed team will face a Play Off against South American opposition. Trinidad and Tobago finished second in CONCACAF on just three occasions in our history.
In 1973, a T&T team that included greats like Everald “Gally” Cummings, Steve David and Warren Archibald whipped Mexico 4-0 but finished second to Haiti and just missed the solitary 1974 World Cup place at stake. Trinidad and Tobago got the ball in the back of the net on five occasions, in a controversial 2-1 loss to Haiti, but only one goal was permitted against the host team. FIFA subsequently banned the El Salvador referee Jose Henriquez who officiated in that qualifier.

TT Olympic squad to face Suriname.
T&T Newsday Reports.

Trinidad and Tobago’s Men’s Olympic team will kick off their qualifying campaign for the 2016 Olympics with a Group 4 Caribbean Football Union Qualifying match against Suriname in Puerto Rico on June 24th.

The fixtures, released by the CFU show TT in Group F along with hosts Puerto Rico, Suriname and the winner of the Dominica versus St Vincent/Grenadines tie.

Only the winner of the group will advance to the CFU Final Round in August from which the top two teams will move on to the CONCACAF Final round in the United States in October. TT’s Olympic team began preparations at the Hasely Crawford Stadium yesterday morning under head coach Zoran Vranes.

The former TT Senior team and Under 20 head coach believes TT can move into the CONCACAF phase but wants his players to know the qualification campaign will be no easy task.

“Well you can see it’s not going to be an easy ride at all. Only one team will come out of our group and we are playing away from home. Okay, we know all of these teams from the past but football is always played one the day,” he told TTFA Media.

“But our players have the experience and the capability to beat these teams. They will have to focus from the start and take that through to the entire campaign. Qualifying for the Olympic games is a great achievement and every country wants to be there. This is like a World Cup because the football tournament at the Olympics has a lot of significance as well,” Vranes added.

The CFU also released the fixtures for the Women’s Olympic qualifiers. Trinidad and Tobago are in Group 2 from August 21st to 25th. TT will open the group against Cayman Islands on August 21st. They will also face St Lucia on August 23rd and Antigua/Barbuda on August 25th.

The winners of the four preliminary groups will advance to the CFU Finals in October. The top three teams will then enter the final CONCACAF round which will involve a final eight teams from which the top two will advance to the Olympics.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Vranes: Pan Am, Olympic footballers working hard.
By Nigel Simon (Guardian).

Yugoslav-born Soca Warriors Olympic and Pan American Games men’s team football coach, Zoran Vranes says his players are working very hard with what little help they have, and what is needed is help from Government and corporate T&T.

A former T&T senior and Under-20 World Cup coach, Vranes was speaking after his combined team came up against the senior Soca Warriors in a practice scrimmage at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo, yesterday.

The two teams were using the matches as part of preparations for upcoming engagements, with the Stephen Hart-coached senior team set to depart today (Thursday) for a friendly international against Jordan, with its eyes set on next month’s 2015 Concacaf Gold Cup in the USA while Vranes’ players are fine tuning for the Pan American Games and 2016 Olympic Games qualifiers.

The Olympic (Under-23) team will kick off their qualifying campaign for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics with a Group F Caribbean Football Union Qualifying match against Suriname in Puerto Rico on June 24 followed by matches against the winner of a playoff between Dominica versus St Vincent/Grenadines on June 26, and two days later versus Puerto Rico.

Only the winner of the group will advance to the CFU Final Round in August from which the top two teams will move on to the Concacaf Final round in the USA in October.

At the Pan American Games which takes place from July 12-26 in Toronto, Canada, T&T comes up against Concacaf powerhouse Mexico, as well as South American duo, Paraguay and Uruguay in Pool B, while Canada, Peru, Panama and Brazil comprise Pool A.

And speaking after the practice match in which his charges were very competitive against their senior peers, Vranes said his team was doing the best possible under the circumstance

“As you can see, the guys are working very hard, but we have to get matches to build more and to work on our weaknesses, and at the moment that is very difficult because we don’t have any support from Government for us to get that international exposure, “said Vranes.

He added, “In this match today (yesterday) against our senior team players we saw the youngsters were able to hold their own for two thirds of the match.

“But for us to get that next level of competitiveness that we need to be successful at the next level, we need exposure against international teams.

A passionate Vranes stressed, “We can do all we want on the training field here at home, but we still will not know how the players will react in real match situations and that is what we need to know as coaches and members of technical staff.

“A lot needs to be put in place for the players on the Pan American and Olympic teams because they are the ones who will be making the step up to the senior squad in the near future, so this is a very key stage in their development.

“If we want these guys to be better at the senior level for T&T, all the work has to be put in now with them at the Olympic and Pan American Games team level, but it will not happen if they don’t get the support from Government, “ stated Vranes.

With two teams to prepare, Vranes while making it clear he will be aiming to do his best with both teams, says from a national stand-point a lot of emphasis must be put into the development of the Olympic team.

Ministry blank causes Olympic men to miss 3rd camp.
By Ian Prescott (Express).

Football suffering

THE Trinidad and Tobago Olympic men's football team had its third overseas camp postponed, just ten days before going into the 2015 CONCACAF Men's Olympic Qualifying tournament in Puerto Rico.

The team is also preparing for the Pan Am Games in August.

The Under-23 Soca Warriors do not have visas, or have confirmed flight, accommodation or funding for its trip to Puerto Rico.

Further, neither the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) nor the Ministry of Sport could provide funding for Zoran Vranes, Trinidad and Tobago's Serbia-born T&T national Under-23 football team head-coach, to travel to Grenada to scout opening Pan Am Games opponents Puerto Rico.

Responding to direct questioning, manager David Muhammad confirmed certain information and also painted a dim picture surrounding the talented young team.

“Tonight (Thursday) we were supposed to send our coach to Grenada to look at the Puerto Rico team play. Nothing,” Muhammad declared. “Up to yesterday, we (the team) were supposed to go to Panama. It was cancelled again. Not a single international game for this team.”

Vranes took control of a talented team containing most of the players that won the 2014 Caribbean Under-20 Championship. Players included in the team are Akeem Garcia, MVP Kadeem Corbin, North East Stars midfielder Neveal Hackshaw, Shannon Gomez, Jomal Williams, Martieon Watson, Brendon Creed, Josiah Trimmingham, Levi Garcia, Akeem Garcia, Kadeem Corbin, Kevon Goddard, Jabari Mitchell, Aikim Andrews and Alvin Jones.

The Under-23 “Soca Warriors” begin their 2015 CONCACAF Men's Olympic Qualifying Championship campaign in a Caribbean qualifying group on June 22 against Puerto Rico.

T&T are placed in Group F along with hosts Puerto Rico, Suriname and St Vincent & the Grenadines. But according to Muhammad, coach Vranes' already late preparation is further compromised by lack of warm-up matches.

“This is the third trip that has been cancelled with this team. We have had no camp. We are preparing for trips then it gets cancelled because the Ministry of Sport says it has no money.”

Muhammad said without a camp the team has had to train all around the country at all the local stadiums. They had also won five warm-up matches against local Pro League teams going down 4-2 only to the senior national team.

“When we were supposed to go to Antigua the other day they had us booked on four different flights across two different days,” Muhammad added. “The reason is because every time we book they (Ministry of Sport) don't pay. We lose the booking and have to re-book again. When they re-book again, we lose the flight again. I'll be darn if we have to go to Puerto Rico like that.”

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Final Olympic Men’s Team named by Vranes for CFU qualifiers.
By Shaun Fuentes (TTFA).

Trinidad and Tobago’s Olympic Men’s Team head coach Zoran Vranes has announced his final team to contest the opening round of Caribbean Football Union 2016 Olympic qualification in Puerto Rico.

Vranes has been overseeing the team’s preparations for the past few weeks and was able to come down to his final selection this week.

The team is expected to depart to Puerto Rico within the next few days as team manager David Muhammad explained that some players are without US Visas and arrangements are being made for this to be obtained in order for them to travel for the opening group stage of the competition. Muhammed noted that CONCACAF is aware of the situation caused by a delay in visa appointments.

Vranes has a squad of good experience and talent with a few players already earning senior international experience. Those include US-based forward Rundell Winchester, North East Stars midfielder Neveal Hackshaw, Aikim Andrews, Alvin Jones, forward Kadeem Corbin, W Connection wingback Shannon Gomez, W Connection’s Jomal Williams and Jesus Perez.

Several other players have made it from previous T&T Under 20 teams, Neil Benjamin, Dario Holmes, Maurice Ford, Shackiel Henry and Dwight Quintero.

“It’s the best selection we can have and I am confident in the team’s ability,” Vranes told TTFA Media.

“Okay maybe our preparation was not the best because we did not have any international matches but this is the situation and we will try our best to overcome the other teams in Puerto Rico. It is going to be very tough because only one team comes out of the group. The Association tried to give us what they could and now it has come down to this where we will go there and play to win all our matches.

“We have to be organized and not make too many costly mistakes, you know, because we have a lot in attack and I think we will create chances and we will need to put them away,” Vranes added.

T&T is scheduled to play Suriname on June 24th, followed by St Vincent/Grenadines on June 26th and Puerto Rico two days later. The winners of the four CFU groups will advance to the semi-final round in August from which the two finalists will advance to the CONCACAF Final Olympic qualifying phase in the United States.

The Ministry of Sport is a supporter of the team's opening round campaign.

Dey fine tuning. How is this a strong squad and you lose 4-2 to a shit squad that lost 3-0 to almighty Jordan? Blame the MOS. Come to think of it, the MOS should be held accountable for everything football related, that way Tim Tee and the albatross called the TTFA should be dissolved for being obsolete and useless.

are the US based players not good enough to make this team?? I find that hard to believe... i think they did that because of expenses and prohibited them from picking the best team, because they couldn't afford to accommodate them or other expenses... >:(

Visa delay rocks Warriors; U-23s travel with 12 players for Olympic opener
By Lasana Liburd (Wired868.com)

Two days away from the opening qualifier for their 2016 Olympic Games campaign, the Trinidad and Tobago National Under-23 Team is expected to have just 12 players in Puerto Rico, as visa complications have ravaged the “Soca Warriors” outfit.

And, farcically, only five footballers due to land in Puerto Rico today were on coach Zoran Vranes’ initial 20-man team. Among the high profile absentees are St Ann’s Rangers attacker Kadeem Corbin and the DIRECTV W Connection trio of Shannon Gomez, Jomal Williams and Alvin Jones who all have limited senior team experience.

Team manager David Muhammed said the Warriors applied for visas just before they went into camp on June 16, only to be told that no applications could be processed that week.

“We had applied within the regular timeframes,” said Muhammad. “These (Olympic qualifiers) were scheduled for August and our first order of business was the Pan Am Games, which starts in July.

“Then, they rescheduled the Olympic qualifying phase and put it before the Pan Am Games and this reoriented our whole plan… The mad scramble started from there.”

The Olympic qualifying schedule was adjusted on 21 April 2015. It left Under-23 officials with eight weeks, before they entered a live-in camp, to select the squad and sort out passports and visas.

Wired868 did not get an official response from the United States Embassy on the National Under-23 Team’s predicament. However, a consular message on the embassy’s website stated that they experienced “technical problems” since May 26, which are not restricted to Trinidad and Tobago.

“The Department of State’s Bureau of Consular Affairs is currently experiencing technical problems with our overseas passport and visa systems,” stated the US Embassy. “This issue is not specific to any particular country, citizenship document, or visa category. We apologize for the inconvenience and are working urgently to correct the problem and restore full operability.

“Passport applications accepted overseas or after May 26, 2015 are affected by this delay.  If you applied for a U.S. passport overseas during this time frame and have travel plans within the next 10 business days, please consider requesting an emergency passport…”

As reality sunk in that the selected 20-man team could not travel to Puerto Rico to represent their country, Vranes and Muhammed were forced to look through their initial training squad for players who already had visas.

Arguably, it rendered their live-in camp at Normandie Hotel and much of last week’s final tournament preparation as useless.

From Vranes’ final squad, only midfielders Neveal Hackshaw, Jelani Felix and Nathaniel Garcia, unattached goalkeeper Montell Joseph and United States-based forward Rundell Winchester had visas. They were expected to landed in Puerto Rico today where Muhammad was waiting for them.

United States-based university players Adrian Welch, Xavier Rajpaul, Ricardo John and Leland Archer as well as the W Connection and Naparima College duo of Martieon Watson and Jabari Mitchell were recalled solely because they already had visas.

And former National Under-20 midfielder Duane Muckette, who is on trial with New York Cosmos and was initially due to miss the preliminary round, was persuaded to return to help the squad.

Almost certainly, they will be the only players that Vranes will have available to face Suriname on Wednesday afternoon. It means the Serbia-born coach must select his starting team from one goalkeeper, two central defenders, four central midfielders, two wingers and three strikers.

Goalkeeper coach Nigel Neverson also had his visa appointment today and will not get to Puerto Rico until later this week.

“Hopefully, the rest of the team will get here on Wednesday,” said Muhammad.

The remaining eight players who will complete the improvised 20-man squad are: goalkeeper Aaron Enill, defender Jesus Perez, utility players Josiah Trimmingham, Aikim Andrews and Jones, midfielders Williams and Corbin and forward Dwight Quintero.

Trimmingham is the only player in that bunch who was not in the initial Olympic squad for the preliminary round.

Attacker Neil Benjamin Jr was ruled out with an injury. The remaining players who will miss the chance to represent their country due to the Trinidad and Tobago Football Association’s inability to acquire visas in time are: defenders Jibiri McDavid, Maurice Ford, Dario Holmes, Triston Hodge and Gomez, forward Shackiel Henry and goalkeeper Javon Sample.

Holmes, McDavid and Hodge were pushing to make their international debuts.

Gomez, who captained Trinidad and Tobago at the 2015 Under-20 CONCACAF Championship and made his senior debut against Panama in March, was a strange case.

Muhammad said Gomez, who applied for his green card last year, was ruled out, as he was not expected to get his travel documents due to complications related to his previous application.

But this was news to the talented 18-year-old full back who showed up at the US Embassy this morning, only to be told that his name was not on the list of interviewees.

“An appointment was supposed to be made for me to see the immigration section,” Gomez told Wired868, “but when I went there they said I was not on the list. So I had to (apply myself) for another appointment (and) they said they would call to see if I can get one by tomorrow morning.

“But right now, it is not looking as if I will be going to Puerto Rico.”

Apparently, Gomez was not informed by Under-23 officials that he was removed from their 20-man squad.

Ironically, the teenaged defender, who has represented his country at every level, was in consideration for the July 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup squad. Senior Warriors coach Stephen Hart said he left Gomez out of his Gold Cup squad because he felt he would be a fringe player with the adults and might benefit more from playing games with the youth team.

“He would have been a strong consideration,” said Hart.

Gomez said he was disappointed but looked forward to rejoining the Under-23 Team for the July Pan American Games and the next Olympic qualifying round in August.

“It is a disappointing feeling,” said Gomez. “I just have to keep my head up and be strong about it… At least for the Pan Am Games and the next (Olympic qualifying) rounds, I will be there.”

Only the group winner will advance to the final Caribbean qualifying rounds in August. Trinidad and Tobago face Suriname on June 24, St Vincent and the Grenadines on June 26 and hosts Puerto Rico on June 28.

Muhammad said the Warriors are in great spirits, despite the issues, and anxious for success. On Saturday, they played their first warm-up match in a closed doors scrimmage with Nicaragua, which they lost 1-0.

“There is a lot of excitement and anxiety (to do well) in the camp,” Muhammad told Wired868. “The spirit in this team is one of the most enthusiastic I’ve encountered in any team.”

Wired868 could not reach TTFA general secretary Sheldon Phillips for comment.

Muhammad said as many as 13 players did not have valid passports when they began training.

This is a point I will keep hammering. All young players say they are serious about the game, and that they want to pursue opportunities in the game abroad. Yet, they don't have valid passports?!!! In that respect, dahis nonsense on them.
