MSG releases plans for $500 million renovationAssociated Press
Updated: April 3, 2008, 8:15 PM EST 7 comments add this RSS blog email print NEW YORK (AP) - Madison Square Garden will widen hallways, raise ceilings and build bigger luxury boxes and more restaurants and bathrooms in a $500 million renovation of the nation's best-known sports arena.

The renovations announced Thursday won't change the exterior of the drum-shaped arena built above Penn Station, although knocking down some walls on the inside would give patrons street views from concourses twice as large as before.

Also planned are a 25-foot-high glass ceiling in the lobby, luxury suites closer to floor level and bars at the cheapest seat level, the blue seats, which are returning after having been replaced by teal in a 1991 renovation.

The arena's owner, Cablevision Systems Corp., released years-old drawings of its plans for renovations after announcing last week it was backing out of a government plan to move into a landmark Manhattan post office a block away.

State officials and a developer envisioned a $14 billion transformation of the Far West Side neighborhood that would have demolished the 40-year-old arena to build an office tower and help bring natural light into a $2 billion-plus renovation of Penn Station, the nation's busiest train station.

Cablevision supports the Moynihan Station project "as that project was originally conceived," said Hank Ratner, a vice chairman for the telecommunications and entertainment company. But "we are going to renovate the arena here, and we are not going to be moving."

The plans by Canadian architectural firm Brisbin Brook Beynon, which built GM Place in Vancouver and Rogers Place in Toronto, also may not require as many state and city permits, since they wouldn't expand upon the Garden's current footprint. Cablevision would need city buildings permits for the renovations, which would begin next year and be finished by late 2011, Ratner said.

The Garden would close during the summers for the renovations, but the New York Knicks and New York Rangers' seasons would not be affected, he said. The Garden, built in 1968, hasn't been renovated since the early 1990s.

The arena's seating — 18,000 to 19,000 for sporting events — would stay the same, but the concourses ringing the arena would more than double to 101,000 square feet, architect Murray Beynon said. A 25-foot-high skylight would be built over an airy lobby that would also be twice the size, he said.

The arena would add two restaurants, including one for any ticket holder with midlevel views of sports events. It would have three fewer luxury boxes, 86, but make all of them bigger and have several at mid- or floor level. A VIP club would let customers shout out to athletes as they walk into the arena and back to their locker rooms. The renovated arena has 50 percent more space for bathrooms.

Ratner said no decisions had been made about ticket prices or how much more the larger luxury boxes would cost.

"A lot of factors go in to how we price the products," he said.

State officials and the developer of the Moynihan Station project, named after the late U.S. Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan, declined comment Thursday

U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, who last week proposed that another government agency take over building the station, released a statement: "We're taking a close look at this and will remain in close discussion with all parties with a goal of building the best Moynihan Station possible and developing the West Side."

 Celtics 101 at Bobcats 78
Game Trax | Box Score | Play by Play | Depth Chart | Head-to-Head

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Even without the Big Three, the Boston Celtics had enough firepower to make history.Leon Powe had 22 points and nine rebounds, leading a makeshift lineup of Celtics who were never threatened in a 101-78 win over the Charlotte Bobcats on Saturday that not only clinched home-court advantage throughout the playoffs, but set the NBA record for biggest single-season turnaround.Boston's trio of stars, Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen, didn't play. Pierce was not with the team after his daughter was born Friday night. Allen and Garnett were being rested by coach Doc Rivers with the start of the playoffs two weeks away.

It didn't matter. Powe dominated the inside and James Posey added a season-high 19 points for the Celtics, who improved to 61-15. That's 37 more wins that last season's 24-58 disaster that led the Celtics to acquire Garnett and Allen.

The previous best turnaround was San Antonio going from 20-62 to 56-26 in 1997-98, the year they got Tim Duncan with the No. 1 overall pick in the draft.

The Celtics' sixth straight win guaranteed that someone will have to win on Boston's famed parquet to prevent the Celtics from winning their first NBA title in 22 years, when the old Big Three of Larry Bird, Robert Parish and Kevin McHale reigned.

For a night, at least, the Celtics showed remarkable depth.

Eddie House scored 16 points off the bench for the Celtics, who had 10 players log at least 18 minutes against a team that they had uncharacteristic trouble against earlier this season.

Emeka Okafor had 17 points and eight rebounds for the Bobcats, who had won in Boston and lost at home to the Celtics on Allen's buzzer-beater. But playing without starting forward Gerald Wallace (groin), Charlotte couldn't build off Friday's win in Toronto and was officially eliminated from playoff contention.

Only point guard Rajon Rondo and center Kendrick Perkins took their normal positions around the center circle for Boston to start the game. Posey, Powe and Tony Allen joined them, then quickly took it to Charlotte.

Posey hit three 3-pointers in the first six minutes as the Celtics built a 14-point lead.

Earl Boykins, who added 15 points for Charlotte, got the Bobcats within six midway through the second quarter. But then Perkins and Powe had putbacks, two of Boston's 15 offensive rebounds, and Boston got its double-digit lead back.

Charlotte never made a charge in the second half, eliminating any second-guessing of Rivers' decision to rest his stars ahead of clinching home-court advantage.

Rivers with two days off before this game and two more days off before Tuesday's visit to Milwaukee, now was the time for extended breaks. Rivers said two of the Big Three could also sit against the Bucks, but that they would play in the remaining five games.

Notes: Pierce's fiancee, Julie Landrum, gave birth to Prianna Lee late Friday afternoon. ... Ray Allen wasn't complaining about getting rest. "We've earned this position that we're in right now," he said. "It's like the quiet before the storm for us." ... Bobcats rookie Jermareo Davidson made his second straight start ahead of Nazr Mohammed. ... Matt Carroll started for Wallace, who aggravated an existing injury Friday. ... The Bobcats had their fifth sellout in 39 home games.

MIAMI (AP)—The Detroit Pistons locked up the No. 2 seed. The Miami Heat moved closer to locking up 250 chances at the No. 1 pick.

Rodney Stuckey scored 19 points, Tayshaun Prince added 14 on 6-for-7 shooting and the Pistons secured the second spot on the Eastern Conference playoff bracket with a 91-75 win Sunday over the Heat.

Jarvis Hayes, Jason Maxiell, Juan Dixon and Arron Afflalo each scored 10 points for the Pistons (55-21), who won their fifth straight. The top three spots in the East—Boston, Detroit and Orlando, in that order—are now set, although it’s been a foregone conclusion they would wind up that way for weeks.

“We’re comfortable with our position right now and we just want to keep doing what’s made us successful,” Pistons point guard Chauncey Billups said. “You can’t do any more than that.”

Earl Barron scored 20 points for Miami, which lost its seventh straight.

“We just couldn’t make anything,” said Heat coach Pat Riley, whose team shot 35 percent.

Chris Quinn finished with 14 points and seven rebounds for the Heat, which got 11 points and nine rebounds from Ricky Davis and 10 points from Mark Blount.

The Heat (13-64) closed in on sealing the NBA’s worst record. Of the 1,000 possible NBA draft lottery combinations, the team with the worst record gets 250 chances of winning the No. 1 pick.

“Obviously, it’s not the best situation, not the situation we thought we’d be in at the beginning of the year,” Quinn said. “The only thing with five or six games remaining to do is go out there and play with pride, play as hard as we can and show what we can do out there.”

The Pistons were without Antonio McDyess and leading scorer Richard Hamilton, who sat out for the sixth time in the last seven games with a sore hip.

Detroit didn’t need them, nor much from its starters, either.

None of the Pistons’ opening five Sunday played more than 28 minutes, and they got long stretches of rest during the game, too. The fivesome combined to play a total of 3 minutes, 28 seconds in the second quarter, which actually was a period where Detroit outscored Miami 20-11 to take a 39-27 lead into the intermission.

“We decided when we came down that we were going to go with the younger guys,” Pistons coach Flip Saunders said. “They did a nice job, found a way to finish and it was very encouraging.”

Prince went 5-for-5 in the third quarter, a period that ended with Billups missing a layup badly—but being credited for an alley-oop assist to Maxiell, who laid the errant shot in for a 68-54 lead entering the fourth.

Davis made a 30-foot 3-pointer as the shot clock expired with 8 1/2 minutes left, drawing Miami within 70-61, but the Pistons put it away with a quick 10-0 run, with Stuckey—who nearly tripled his season scoring average Sunday— getting six of those points.

“The bench has definitely been playing a big role,” McDyess said.

One Miami highlight: The Heat honored center Alonzo Mourning with a halftime ceremony.

Mourning, who entered the year insisting it would be his final season, saw the year cut short by a devastating knee injury in December, which figured to end his career. But in recent weeks, he’s been speaking like someone who hasn’t totally ruled out yet another comeback attempt.
Miami Heat forward Stephane Lasme (45) goes up for a shot defended by Detroit Pistons center Theo Ratiff (42) in the fourth period of an NBA basketball game in Miami, Sunday, April 6, 2008. The Pistons defeated the Heat 91-75.

“Time will dictate my basketball future,” Mourning told the crowd.

Another rare Heat highlight from this dismal season could come Monday, when Riley—a seven-time NBA champion and the third-winningest coach in league history—is expected to be announced as part of the 2008 class entering the Basketball Hall of Fame.

This year’s group of enshrinees will be announced in San Antonio, a few hours before the Kansas-Memphis NCAA title game.

“I’ve never been big on individual awards,” Riley said. “But this is different.”

Notes

Detroit was 4-0 against Miami this season. … Hamilton could be back in Detroit’s lineup in time for Wednesday’s trip to Philadelphia. … Barron took nine of Miami’s first 13 shots. He started 5-for-7 in the first 5:25, then missed his next eight and didn’t record another field goal until 4:15 remained in the game. … The Heat fell to 2-31 when scoring under 90 points.

MIAMI, April 28 – Miami HEAT President and Head Coach Pat Riley announced this afternoon that he has decided to step down as Head Coach of the Miami HEAT, but will continue to serve as team President. HEAT Managing General Partner Micky Arison and Riley jointly announced that former Assistant Coach/Director of Scouting Erik Spoelstra has been elevated to head coach. Spoelstra becomes the sixth head coach in franchise history.

“The game of basketball is a game about talent,” said Riley. “While we are always looking for NBA talent to perform on the court, the most important talent that you may find has to perform on the bench, in the locker room, on the practice court, late at night, watching film, motivating and executing all the responsibilities of a head coach. I believe Erik Spoelstra is one of the most talented young coaches to come around in a long time. This game is now about younger coaches who are technologically skilled, innovative and bring fresh new ideas. That’s what we feel we are getting with Erik Spoelstra. He’s a man that was born to coach.”

Spoelstra just completed his 13th season as a member of the HEAT staff and his seventh in the role of Assistant Coach/Director of Scouting where he had the primary role of developing game plans for upcoming opponents. Spoelstra was responsible for coordinating the video staff and advance scouts while also overseeing the development of scouting reports and videos. He has been in charge of the HEAT’s Individual Player Development Program and has served as the head coach of the HEAT’s summer league squad each of the past three summers.

The 37-year old Portland native originally joined the HEAT as the team’s video coordinator in 1995. He spent two years in that role where he was responsible for preparing scouting tapes and heading up the team’s information technology for the coaching staff. He served as Assistant Coach/Video Coordinator the following two seasons (1997-99). He was then promoted to Assistant Coach/Advance Scout and served in that role for two seasons (1999-01) before being elevated to Assistant Coach/Director of Scouting the role he has served in the past seven years. Spoelstra has become the NBA’s youngest current head coach, born on Nov. 1, 1970 in Evanston, IL. He is 69 days younger than the second youngest head coach, Lawrence Frank of the New Jersey Nets.

A 1992 graduate from the University of Portland, Spoelstra was the starting point guard for four years for the Pilots and was named the West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year. After college he spent two years as a player/coach for Tus Herten, a team in the professional sports league of Germany.

Spoesltra is the son of Jon Spoelstra, a long-time NBA executive who has guided the Portland Trail Blazers, Denver Nuggets and New Jersey Nets. Riley joined the HEAT as President and Head Coach on Sept. 2, 1995. In his two stints as head coach (1995-2003 and 2005-08) he guided the HEAT to a 454-395 (.535) record with one NBA title, one conference championship, six division championships and eight playoff berths in his 11 seasons on the bench. In addition to ranking as Miami’s all-time victory leader, Riley ranks third on the NBA’s all-time regular season list, compiling a 1,210-694 (.636) career mark in 24 seasons as an NBA head coach with the Los Angeles Lakers, New York Knicks and Miami HEAT. He also ranks second on the all-time postseason victory list amassing a 171-111 (.606) mark. Riley, who was elected into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame earlier this month, has led his teams to five NBA championships as a head coach, nine conference championships and a league-record 18 division championships. He is the only coach in league history to capture the NBA Coach of the Year Award with three different teams and his string of 19 consecutive playoff appearances as a head coach from 1982-2001 is a league record for consecutive postseason appearances. His 21 total postseason appearances are also the most by a head coach in NBA history. He has been named NBA Coach of the Month an NBA-record 11 times and has more 50-win (17) and 60-win (7) seasons than any coach in NBA history. Additionally, when he registered his 1,000th regular season victory on Nov. 1, 2000, he became the fastest coach or manager to reach 1,000 wins in the history of the four professional sports in North America, bettering the previous mark held by Fred Clarke of the Pittsburgh Pirates by 144 games. Riley recorded his 1,000th win in just his 1,434th game. On Feb. 29, 2008 he became the only coach in NBA history to record at least 450 wins with two franchises as he guided the HEAT to a 103-93 win in Seattle. Riley currently stands as the all-time leader in both regular season and postseason victories for both the Lakers and the HEAT and owns the highest winning percentage in Knicks history.

Jordan hires Brown to coach BobcatsAssociated Press
Updated: April 29, 2008, 1:04 PM EST 17 comments add this RSS blog email print CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Larry Brown wanted to resurrect his vagabond, Hall of Fame coaching career. Michael Jordan needed a veteran teacher and a big hire to rescue his sinking reputation as an NBA executive.

Franchise in a funk The Bobcats' short history has not been illustrious. Larry Brown will be the third coach in the four-year run of a team that has finished in fourth in the Southeast Division every season. Year W-L Coach
2004-05 18-64 Bernie Bickerstaff
2005-06 26-56 Bernie Bickerstaff
2006-07 33-49 Bernie Bickerstaff
2007-08 32-50 Sam Vincent
The two former North Carolina players teamed up Tuesday when Jordan introduced Brown as coach of the Charlotte Bobcats — his ninth NBA coaching job. Brown agreed to a four-year contract, returning to the state where his nomadic coaching journey began.

"How are you going to say no to Michael?" Brown said. "I've known him a long time. The things he stands for have made our game better. There's no way I could say no to him. It was a pretty easy decision once my wife said yes."

The 67-year-old Brown replaces Sam Vincent, whom Jordan hired last year despite no NBA head coaching experience. Vincent, who was fired Saturday, struggled to find consistent rotations and clashed with players in a 32-50 season.

Brown's nine NBA teams are three more than any other coach — Kevin Loughery and Lenny Wilkens each coached six.

"I think I've coached almost everybody in the NBA, but I'm going to challenge everybody to do their best," Brown said. "That's what Michael is about and that's what I'm about."

The Bobcats are in their fourth year, and Brown gives the struggling franchise instant credibility. He's one of only five NBA coaches with more than 1,000 wins and the only coach to lead teams to NBA and NCAA titles.

But Brown hasn't lasted anywhere long, and has had some ugly divorces. His last coaching job was the disastrous 2005-06 season in New York, when the Knicks went 23-59 and Brown clashed with management.

His dismissal was followed by a long dispute over how much money he was owed for the rest of his contract. A deal eventually was struck and Brown became an executive vice president with the Philadelphia 76ers. Brown quit that job two days before Vincent was fired, and was immediately linked to the Charlotte opening.

"I don't want to put too much pressure on Larry," Jordan said. "But I think this is the atmosphere he enjoys."

Brown was a point guard at North Carolina under Dean Smith, decades before Jordan led the school to a national title under the same coach. Brown's coaching career took root in this state. He was hired to coach Davidson, only to resign a month later without a coaching a game. He then went on to coach the ABA's Carolina Cougars.

While Brown took UCLA to the Final Four and won an NCAA title with Kansas, most of his experience has been in the NBA. Brown improved teams in Denver, San Antonio, Indiana and Philadelphia and won an NBA title with the Detroit Pistons in 2004.

Brown, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2002, will now try to get the Jason Richardson-led Bobcats into the playoffs and help Jordan taste success for the first time in two stints running NBA teams.

While Jordan won six NBA titles with the Chicago Bulls, he's made several questionable moves in the front office.

Vincent's ouster marked the second time a coach Jordan hired lasted only one season. Leonard Hamilton resigned after going 19-63 with the Washington Wizards in 2000-01.

Jordan was fired by the Wizards. He bought a minority stake in the Bobcats in 2006 and took over the decision-making from Bernie Bickerstaff. When Bickerstaff moved to the front office after three seasons on the bench, Jordan replaced him with Vincent.
