Red Bull New York announced Monday it has waived its rights to striker Randi Patterson. Patterson, a graduate of the University of North Carolina - Greensboro, was drafted by the Red Bulls in the 2007 MLS Supplemental Draft in the first round (sixth overall). The 2005 Southern Conference Player of the Year did not see any regular season action, but played in nine Reserve League matches, tallying two goals. Patterson was two-time First-Team All-State selection and two-time Bergen County Coaches Association League Player of the Year.
The Kansas City Wizards have also waived Edson Elcock. Both Patterson and Elcock were born in the United States and are eligible to represent Trinidad & Tobago through their parents. Patterson was recently called up by the T&T national team for training while the Brooklyn born Elcock was never part of the T&T set-up. Elcock was named an Adidas ESP Top 150 player in the nation. The former Old Dominion University striker played for the Silverlake Rams and won the NY State Championship. In 2006 he was named on the NSCAA All-America First team, First Team All-CAA and NSCAA All-Region first team. Elcock played in eight reserve games for the Wizards and managed to score 3 goals in the process.
In related news, another American born Trinidadian Salim Bullen is currently training with MLS club Real Salt Lake. Bullen, a 23-year-old wide midfielder that spent the 2006 season with the USL1's Portland Timbers and, more recently, played in nine contests for the MISL's Milwaukee Wave during the early portion of the 2007/08 season. Spent his four-year collegiate career at Bradley University from 2002-05, playing in 65 contests and contributing three goals and nine assists during his time with the Braves. Earned All-Missouri Valley Conference Second Team honors following his senior season after starting all 21 games and registering a goal and six assists. His brother Oral is currently on the Portland Timbers Roster as well.
Charleston Battery's Ian Bennett was born in Hamilton, Canada through Trinidadian parents has offered his service to represent the men in red, white and black. The three-time player of the year at St. Thomas More High School in Hamilton broke school records with 49 goals and 19 assists in 45 games played. Was part of Marian track team, competing in the 100 meters, 200, 4x100 relay and 4x400 relay. He was named to MCC All-Conference Team in 2005-06 and 2006-07 and was also named the 2006 MCC Player of the Year. Because of his pace and attacking ability his club Charleston Battery was able to pull of an upset over MLS team Houston Dynamo in the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in 2007. Bennett was causing havoc to the Dynamo defence and eventually winning himself a penalty a goal which ended up being the game winner for the A-League (now USL First Division) team.
