Brazilian footballer Marcos Paulo is recovering from one of the most bizarre injuries possible on a football field - an attack by ants.

The Santa Cruz do Rio Pardo player had to leave the field after bites by the ants became too much during a Sao Paulo state championship match against Oeste e Santacruzense.

Marcos Paulo stripped off his shirt after feeling stings and frantically splashed himself with water from a puddle on the pitch.

Still in pain, he decided the only solution was to run off to the changing room for a bath before returning to the match and helping his side to a 2-2 draw.

The city government, which is responisble for the stadium in Presidente Prudente, have promised to make an example of the fiendish ants.

"It is an isolate and very unusual incident," said sport secretary Edson Pelagio. "But the official responsible for the stadium's pitch has been ordered to put poison on the grass to stop it happening again."

Other bizarre footballers' injuries...

• Jason Koumas got an eye infection while playing for West Brom from chemicals used on a pitch. Former Wales goalkeeper Andy Dibble went to hospital with a similar injury after suffering chemical burns when making diving saves.

• Watching TV has felled many players. Robbie Keane damaged his ankle standing on a remote control, David Seaman and David James have both injured themselves reaching for the remote, and Rio Ferdinand pulled a muscle putting his feet up to watch the box.

• Argentina striker German Denis had his backside bitten by a dog during pre-season training with Buenos Aires club Independiente last month. Thankfully, he escaped injury or disease.

• But Brentford goalkeeper Chic Brodie wasn't so lucky. His career ended with a shattered a kneecap when he tried to tackle a dog on the loose in a match against Colchester in 1970.   :rotfl: I not laughing at his career disaster, but the fact the man try to tackle ah dog ;D
• Perhaps there's something about goalkeepers. Manchester United's Alex Stepney dislocated his jaw while shouting at his defenders in 1975.   :rotfl: :rotfl:

• Spain keeper Santiago Canizares missed the 2002 World Cup after dropping a bottle of aftershave on his foot.

• US international Kasey Keller knocked out his front teeth while pulling his golf bag from the boot of his car.

• Former Liverpool reserve Michael Stensgaard dislocated his shoulder by taking an ironing board out of the cupboard.

• Richard Wright injured a shoulder falling out of his loft.

• Dave Beasant needed a spell on the sidelines after dropping a bottle of salad cream on his foot.

• And last, but not least, Stalybridge Celtic keeper Mark Statham reportedly missed a game in 1999 after getting his head trapped in a car door.
