Lancashire rivals clash on Grand Slam Sunday

Liverpool have discovered a new-found sense of self-confidence as they prepare to travel to Old Trafford to take on Manchester United on Grand Slam Sunday.

The Reds had been offered as potential Premier League champions ahead of the current campaign, but when United became the first - and so far only - visiting team this season to leave Anfield with three points in December that prospect appeared as unlikely as the two fierce Lancashire rivals agreeing to let bygones be bygones.

However, over recent weeks there has been a gentle subsidence in the talk of Liverpool's main objective being their battle with Merseyside rivals Everton for fourth spot in the table as aspirations have quietly drifted three places higher.

Table-toppers United, though, have been there, done that and have collected the Premier League winners' T-shirt on nine previous occasions and they will feel they have heard all the stereotypical Scouse self-confident swagger before.

Having thought they had polished off the Reds' title talk four months ago, United will be looking forward to once again ending any speculative wagging of tongues this weekend.

Ferdinand doubt

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson openly admits his enjoyment of the intensity of this fixture and he will be desperate to maintain his unbeaten league record against his opposite number Rafa Benitez to end any further speculation of a Reds resurgence and reinforce his side's hopes of defending their title.

However, Ferguson has doubts over the fitness of defender Rio Ferdinand as he prepares for the visit of Liverpool.

Ferdinand has been struggling with a back injury and missed Wednesday's victory over Bolton as Ferguson experimented with a new look defensive formation to accommodate for the centre-back's possible absence.

Gerard Pique came in for Ferdinand and Ferguson insists he would have no qualms in continuing to select the Spaniard, but Patrice Evra and Wes Brown could be recalled.

Agger absence

United also have concerns over goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar (groin) and striker Louis Saha (knee) as Ferguson faces a selection dilemma, but the Scot will have no doubts in picking the top-flight's leading scorer Cristiano Ronaldo after the Portuguese trickster took his haul in all competitions this season to 33 on Wednesday to surpass George Best's record for goals in a season.

Meanwhile, Benitez has no new injury worries ahead of Liverpool's short journey down the East Lancs Road.

Defender Daniel Agger is out after having had a third operation on a broken metatarsal earlier this week and Benitez does not expect his return until next season, while Harry Kewell - whose Anfield days appear numbered - will be missing as he is set to captain Australia in Singapore.

Benitez has seen his side record seven consecutive victories in all competitions since February's FA Cup defeat to Barnsley and he is expected to maintain a settled line-up, although the experienced John Arne Riise may get the nod over Ryan Babel.

Star striker Fernando Torres, the man largely responsible for Liverpool's recent 100 per cent record, will lead the Liverpool line as Benitez looks to add to the gossip in Lancashire.

Chelsea v Arsenal preview
Team news to be added

London rivals go head-to-head on Grand Slam Sunday

Chelsea will have to cast aside this season's unwanted reputation as big-game bottlers when they tackle Arsenal on Grand Slam Sunday.

Since Avram Grant took the helm in September, the Blues have failed to beat any of the top seven in league action and have collected just two points from their four meetings with the top four all season.

They also suffered Wembley heartache against Tottenham with a disappointing display in the Carling Cup final and crashed out of the FA Cup at Barnsley, leading some pundits to question Grant's ability to get the best out of his players in key fixtures.

But victory over bitter London rivals Arsenal on Sunday would silence the critics and see Chelsea climb above the Gunners into second place in the Premier League table.

Arsene Wenger's men have stuttered badly in recent weeks, with four successive draws seeing them go from five points ahead of Manchester United at the summit to three points adrift.

A fifth game without a victory would be another hammer blow to their title hopes, but the Gunners proved they have the appetite for the big occasion after seeing off European champions Milan 2-0 in Italy to progress to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.

Team news

Czech international goalkeeper Petr Cech is hoping to return to the Chelsea starting line-up for the clash with the Gunners and will undergo a late fitness test.

Cech has been out of action with an ankle injury since the 4-0 thrashing of West Ham at Upton Park on 1st March with Carlo Cudicini deputising.

Grant could also recall Nicolas Anelka after a thigh injury kept him out of the midweek thriller at Spurs, along with midfield duo Michael Ballack and John Obi Mikel.

Arsenal have no new injury worries to contend with as Abou Diaby (calf) and Tomas Rosicky (hamstring) remain on the sidelines.

Theo Walcott, who has earned an England recall from Fabio Capello, is pressing for a place in the starting XI while Johan Djourou (groin) played for the reserves in midweek as he works on his match fitness.

United tuh win and Chelski and Arsenal tuh draw. Ah tink Arsenal in trouble goin don the stretch cause dey only have 3 home games outta 8 left tuh play. All dem wins dey was rackin up earlier was at home and dey have some tough places tuh goh play in.

I would be happy if Chelsea beat Arsenal at Stamford Bridge. A Gunner loss with a United win means the title stays at Old Trafford an the crucial match between United and Arsenal at Old Trafford will be just a normal game

I as a chelsea hater am quite content with any result except a chelsea win. A draw seems most likely doh.
The greatest single cause of atheism in the world today are Christians who acknowledge Jesus ;with their lips and walk out the door and deny Him by their lifestyle. That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable.

I have to agree with de Small Mag, ManU is on form so it's hard to see them losing at home.

Che$ki under Grant haven't performed well in any of their crunch matches this season but on the other hand the Arse seem to have lost their way in recent weeks so a draw is the most likely outcome.  If there was ever a time when I wished both teams could lose this would be it though ;D.

ok i sayin this as a chelsea fan

imagine Arsenal and Man u win....that mean that once again the title race is narrowed to two and the match between arsenal and man u is essentialy the title decider

BUT if Chelsea and Liverpool win.....Chelsea creep back into the title race and its in a way a 3 horse race and Liverpool find themselves racing down what would be an arsenal team that is dropiing games.

Sopcast telling me no peers to connect to
Whatever you do, do it to the purpose; do it thoroughly, not superficially. Go to the bottom of things. Any thing half done, or half known, is in my mind, neither done nor known at all. Nay, worse, for it often misleads.
