"This should never happen to you or anybody else in the world," Jack Austin Warner said at a media conference on Friday evening at the Queen's Park Oval.
On Friday, Warner, a vice-president of football governing body FIFA, and also adviser to the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (T&TFF), chided the local media, calling those present "cowards", for not walking out in solidarity with T&TFF press officer Sean Fuentes, who was asked to leave a press conference after filming a speech in which new Minister of Sport Gary Hunt was speaking.
Fuentes usually attends press conferences, and many times provides video clips, information and photos to media houses who are not present, particularly at overseas events. Since taking office a few months ago, Sports Minister Hunt and opposition MP Warner, have developed an adversarial relationship. Warner accused Hunt of discriminating against football and not offering any assistance to the Federation for 2008, although the FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign is due to begin soon.
Warner stated that throughout 164 countries, he had never seen a football association press officer thrown out of a football press conference by a country's Ministry of Sport. Warner also made a complaint to Hunt's boss.
"Before I left Parliament, " Warner said. "I told the Prime Minister, 'talk to your Minister of Sport'."
