Avery Johnson dismissed as coach
Art Garcia | Mavs.com

Posted: April 30, 2008

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Avery Johnson was dismissed as coach of the Dallas Mavericks the day after a disappointing season ended with a first-round playoff exit in New Orleans. Incredible highs and heartbreaking lows marked the tenure of Johnson, who leaves as the most successful coach in franchise history by many measures.

Johnson became the eighth coach in team history on March 19, 2005 and posted a record of 194-70 (.735) during the regular season. He led the Mavs to the playoffs four consecutive years, including a trip to the 2006 NBA Finals. His postseason record of 23-24 (.489) included 12 losses in the last 16 games.

“You’ve got to take the good with the bad,” Johnson said Tuesday night after the 99-94 loss to the Hornets that ended the series. “That is called life. There are a lot of highs and lows in coaching, but the highs outweigh the lows. The rewards outweigh anything.

“I’ve been through much worse. There are a lot of people in bad shape and I am not one of them.”

The search for the ninth coach in club history begins immediately. The next coach takes over a team that could be significantly different from the squad that suffered through an inconsistent 51-31 regular season that earned the seventh seed in the Western Conference.

The 15-man roster features eight potential free agents. Dirk Nowitzki remains the focal point, but the cast of characters surrounding the 2006-07 MVP is expected to undergo major change. Jason Kidd, Josh Howard, Jason Terry, Erick Dampier, Jerry Stackhouse and Brandon Bass are under contract, though Kidd can option out. Johnson’s staff – Paul Westphal, Joe Prunty and Mario Elie – currently remains under contract through next season.

In his first full season as head coach (2005-06), Johnson guided the Mavericks to 60 wins and their first appearance in the NBA Finals. He became the fastest coach to reach 50 wins (62 games), coached the Western Conference All-Star team and was named the NBA’s Coach of the Year.

Johnson led Dallas to a franchise-record 67 wins, the NBA’s best record, the following season. The mark was also the sixth best in league history. Following a 10-0 month of February, Johnson garnered Western Conference Coach of the Month honors, an award he won three times in his career.

This past season, Johnson became the fastest coach in NBA history to reach 150 wins with a victory over Memphis on November 17, 2007. He accomplished that feat in just 191 games.

“It is never easy to relieve a coach of his duties, especially one of Avery’s caliber,” owner Mark Cuban said. “He is a talented coach and I want to thank him for his efforts over the last four years and what he has done for this franchise. We wish him well in the future.”

The Mavs were the first head-coaching opportunity for Johnson, who played 16 years in the NBA before retiring before the 2004-05 season. He joined the staff of former coach Don Nelson and took the coaching reins 64 games into his first season on the bench.

“I would like to thank Avery for his valuable contributions to the Mavericks organization,” president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson said. “Over the past four years, he has been an integral part of our team’s success. We wish AJ nothing but the very best in his future endeavors.”

Kerr refutes report saying D'Antoni, Suns might part waysESPN.com news services

Mike D'Antoni's Future In Doubt In PhoenixDespite averaging 58 regular-season wins the past four seasons, Mike D'Antoni might be out as Phoenix Suns coach.

An SI.com report on Tuesday night said the coach will not return after his team was eliminated by the San Antonio Spurs in five games in their best-of-7 first-round playoff series. D'Antoni has two years and $8.5 million left on his contract.

Suns general manager Steve Kerr denied the report, Arizona Republic reporter Paul Coro said Wednesday morning on ESPN's "First Take."

"I talked to Steve Kerr this morning and he also asked Mike D'Antoni about that story last night and he denied it," Coro said. "He said Mike D'Antoni is still their coach and he's done a great job the last four years.

"They obviously have some things they might want to go over, philosophical differences and such. But Mike D'Antoni is still the coach."

D'Antoni

The Republic confirmed part of a recent Sports Illustrated article which chronicled a confrontation between D'Antoni and Kerr.

In a November conversation, Kerr reportedly suggested that the Suns run more post-up plays for forward Amare Stoudemire. D'Antoni objected, and a shouting match ended with the coach telling the GM not to advise him "how to coach offense."

That jibes with Tuesday's SI.com report which cites sources within the organization saying that D'Antoni does not feel he has the support of owner Robert Sarver or Kerr, who took over as GM last June.

While the Web site did not say that D'Antoni leaving the Suns is imminent, it did speculate that he would not be discouraged from pursuing opportunities with the Chicago Bulls or New York Knicks, among other teams.

D'Antoni wouldn't be the only successful coach on the hot seat this postseason. Immediately after the Dallas Mavericks were eliminated from the playoffs on Tuesday, Avery Johnson's status appeared to be in limbo. ESPN.com's Marc Stein recently reported that his job would be in serious jeopardy if he did not make it out of the first round.

Having been eliminated by Tim Duncan and the Spurs in three of their past four playoff appearances heading into this season, Phoenix made a bold move to take the next step in February. The Suns sent four-time All-Star forward Shawn Marion and guard Marcus Banks to the Miami Heat for Shaquille O'Neal, hoping the former MVP would provide the inside presence the team had lacked.

Phoenix sported a 37-17 record when O'Neal first took the court for the Suns and finished out the season at a little slower pace, ending at 55-27.
O'Neal did average 15.2 point and 9.2 rebounds against the Spurs, but his poor free-throw shooting cost Phoenix in the series. San Antonio's Hack-a-Shaq philosophy resulted in the big man going to the line a whopping 20 times in Game 5 alone, but he hit only nine in the 92-87 loss. He shot 50 percent from the line (32-of-64) in the series.

D'Antoni has a 267-172 record in six seasons as an NBA coach. He is credited with helping to revive the running game in the league at a time when scores were plummeting amid pedestrian half-court offenses.

Failing to blend his philosophy with a new general manager in Kerr, who then brought in O'Neal, might ultimately be what puts the brakes on this Suns era.

Report: Kobe wins MVP awardby FOXSports.com

Updated: May 2, 2008, 10:55 PM EST 32 comments add this RSS blog email print Kobe Bryant has been selected the NBA's most valuable player for the first time in his 12-year career, the Los Angeles Times reported Friday.

The newspaper cited sources familiar with the outcome who were not authorized to speak publicly about the award until the official announcement next week.

"We have not been told anything by the league," Lakers spokesman John Black told The Associated Press.

Bryant, 29, has won three championships with the Los Angeles Lakers and is widely regarded as the league's premier talent. But he had never come close to winning an MVP before this season — he was third in voting last year, his highest finish.

Bryant averaged 28.3 points, 6.3 rebounds and 5.4 assists in the regular season. More importantly, he led the Lakers to a 57-25 record and the top seed in the rugged Western Conference.

The award figured to go to either Bryant, New Orleans point guard Chris Paul or Boston Celtics forward Kevin Garnett.

One and done: Carlisle tabbed to coach Mavs
Art Garcia | Mavs.com

Posted: May 9, 2008

Rick Carlisle didn’t waste any time getting to work … even if he didn’t have the job just yet. The 48-year-old coach ran his first practice in, of all places, Dirk Nowitzki’s living room.

Carlisle’s tour of Mavericks with influence last week took him to the home of last year’s MVP. While discussing strategy and his vision, Carlisle got Nowitzki up off the couch for an impromptu demonstration of Larry Bird post-up moves. Somewhat odd? Sure, but Nowitzki appreciated the enthusiasm.

So did everyone else. The search for the ninth coach in club history targeted Carlisle from the start and as the process progressed, it became apparent the search would be one and done. The franchise finalized a four-year contract with Carlisle on Friday night, with the signing expected Saturday and an introductory press conference Wednesday.

“Incredibly excited that Rick has come on board,” owner Mark Cuban said. “His coaching record speaks for itself. He has a unique ability to coach multiple styles of play, which we think makes him a great fit for the Mavs.”
Carlisle replaces Avery Johnson, who was dismissed on April 30 – the day after New Orleans eliminated the Mavs in the first round. Dallas is the third coaching stop for Carlisle after previous stints with Detroit and Indiana.
President of basketball operations Donnie Nelson said that Carlisle fit the profile of “balanced winner” the organization was looking for after Johnson’s tenure. Not only is Carlisle a proven NBA coach – five playoff trips in six seasons – but his teams are traditionally sound defensively and solid offensively.
During his last job as an assistant, Carlisle served as “offensive coordinator” for an Indiana team that reached the NBA Finals. He also spent training camp last October studying the offense of Mike D’Antoni and the Phoenix Suns.
Carlisle made a strong initial impression after meeting in Indianapolis last week with Nelson, who praised his “basketball IQ.” Separate meetings followed with Cuban and Nowitzki in Dallas. Jerry Stackhouse played for Carlisle in Detroit and has always spoken highly of his one-time coach.

Reshaping the roster will be one of the first orders of business for Carlisle, Nelson, Cuban and the rest of the front office. The Mavs potentially have eight free agents coming off a disappointing 51-31 regular season and 4-1 playoff loss. Dallas has reached the postseason the last eight years.

After more than a decade as an assistant, Carlisle cut his head coaching teeth with the Pistons in 2001-02. Detroit went 100-64 (.610) with two Central Division title and one trip to the Eastern Conference finals under Carlisle, the 2002 Coach of the Year. Despite the successful run that restarted Detroit’s current playoff streak, the Pistons fired Carlisle in 2003 and replaced him with Larry Brown.

Carlisle wasn’t out of work long. Bird, his former Boston teammate and Indiana president of basketball operations, brought Carlisle back to the Pacers that offseason. Carlisle’s had also been on Bird’s staff in Indiana before taking the Detroit job. Carlisle led the Pacers to the NBA’s best record at 61-21, the most wins in franchise history, and his third straight Central Division championship during his first year leading the Pacers.

The Pacers would make the playoffs the next year (2004-05) with a 44-38, but the season was derailed by the infamous Indiana-Detroit brawl on Nov. 19. “I felt like I was fighting for my life out there,” Carlisle said at the time. “I’m sorry the game had to end this way.” After the suspensions and trades, the Pacers were never the same. Indiana did sneak into the postseason in 2006, but Carlisle was let go after missing the playoffs in 2007.

Carlisle began his playing career as the only rookie to make the Celtics in 1984. He played three years in Boston and was a member of the 1986 championship team led by Bird. After retiring in 1990, he joined Bill Fitch’s staff in New Jersey.

D'Antoni accepts offer to coach KnicksUpdated: May 10, 2008, 6:53 PM EST 224 comments add this RSS blog email print NEW YORK (AP) - Mike D'Antoni has agreed to coach the New York Knicks, bringing his entertaining offensive style from the Phoenix Suns to a team coming off one of the worst seasons in franchise history.

The Knicks released a statement Saturday night saying they had agreed in principle with D'Antoni and that a press conference would be held once the contract had been completed.

D'Antoni had two years and $8.5 million left on his Phoenix contract. Suns owner Robert Sarver wouldn't confirm that D'Antoni had taken the New York job earlier Saturday, but said, "Mike called me this morning to thank me, so I figured this was up."

The offer is reportedly for $24 million over four years, making him one of the NBA's highest-paid coaches. The Chicago Bulls also interviewed D'Antoni for their coaching job.

Messages were left for D'Antoni and his agent, Warren LeGarie.

D'Antoni replaces Isiah Thomas, who was fired in April after the Knicks went 23-59, tying the franchise record for losses in a season. D'Antoni will become the Knicks' sixth different coach since the start of the 2002-03 season.

The 57-year-old D'Antoni led the Suns to a 55-27 record last season and was coach of the year in 2005. He had a 232-96 regular-season record the past four years, but the Suns were eliminated in the first round by San Antonio last month. The Suns then gave D'Antoni permission to pursue other openings.

New Knicks president Donnie Walsh had been looking for a coach since removing Thomas on April 18. Walsh previously met with former Knicks guard and television analyst Mark Jackson and Knicks assistant Herb Williams. But Walsh took his time to see what coaches would become available during the postseason.
He found one who won at least 54 games each of the last four seasons. The Knicks, meanwhile, are coming off their seventh straight losing season and haven't won a playoff game since 2001.

They've been just as dysfunctional off the court, with Thomas and Madison Square Garden found to have sexually harassed a former team employee and forced to pay $11.5 million. The affable D'Antoni should improve the Knicks' image, even if it won't be easy to make a winner out of the team.

Walsh acknowledges it will take time to rebuild the Knicks, and their roster seems ill-suited for D'Antoni's uptempo style. They are slow in the frontcourt with Eddy Curry and Zach Randolph, and the point guard situation is unclear with Stephon Marbury missing most of last season and coming off ankle surgery.

But D'Antoni quickly made Phoenix a winner after becoming their coach 21 games into the 2003-04 season. A short time later, the Suns traded Marbury and Penny Hardaway to the Knicks, clearing the way for the offseason blockbuster signing of Steve Nash.

Nash was a perfect fit for D'Antoni, and the Suns quickly became NBA darlings, their refreshing style far more entertaining than the plodding game of most teams. In the 2004-05 season, the Suns won 62 games, tying a franchise record, leading to coach of the year honors for D'Antoni and the first of two MVP awards for Nash.

But the Suns never made it to the finals under D'Antoni, losing to San Antonio three times and Dallas once. The acquisition of Shaquille O'Neal in February was designed to toughen the team and a better match for the Spurs. But after the Suns' five-game loss, D'Antoni's future with the organization became a subject of speculation.

President and general manager Steve Kerr, hired a year ago, acknowledged differences in philosophy, and eventually gave D'Antoni permission to speak with other teams.

Nash said Friday he believed D'Antoni would stay in Phoenix, and it's unclear where the Suns look now. But Kerr most likely will go after a more defensive-minded coach since defense was the biggest weakness under D'Antoni.

Horford, Durant lead All-Rookie teamUpdated: May 13, 2008, 5:27 PM EST 19 comments add this RSS blog email print NEW YORK (AP) - Al Horford and Rookie of the Year Kevin Durant headlined the NBA All-Rookie team announced Tuesday.

Atlanta's Horford was the only unanimous choice with 58 votes, followed by Seattle's Durant with 57 in balloting by the league's head coaches.

Houston's Luis Scola (53), Los Angeles Clippers forward Al Thornton (48) and Seattle's Jeff Green (43) also made the first team.

Horford ranked first among rookies in double-doubles (25) and rebounds (9.7), helping the Hawks end the league's longest postseason drought with their first playoff berth since 1999.

The 6-foot-9 Durant led the SuperSonics with 20.3 points per game, 7.6 more than any other rookie. He was the only first-year player to lead his team in five categories — points, blocks, steals, free throws made and free throw percentage. Durant blocked more shots than any other guard in the league (75).

The All-Rookie second team was Toronto's Jamario Moon, Memphis' Juan Carlos Navarro, Philadelphia's Thaddeus Young, Detroit's Rodney Stuckey and Houston's Carl Landry.

Ainge named top exec for Celtics' turnaroundUpdated: May 14, 2008, 8:24 PM EST 16 comments add this RSS blog email print BOSTON (AP) - Danny Ainge, who engineered the trades for Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen that helped the Boston Celtics post the biggest turnaround in league history, was given the Sporting News NBA Executive of the Year award before Wednesday night's playoff game.

"What he did off the court with this team, it made a lot of players and a lot of teams in the NBA aware that the Celtics were serious," Allen said before Game 5 of the Eastern Conference semifinal against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

In the voting by general managers and other executives from all 30 teams, Ainge received 18 of the 47 votes. Los Angeles Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak had 14 votes and New Orleans Hornets general manager Jeff Bower who had 12.

"He orchestrated a stunning and record setting turnaround of a struggling team with two great trades and various other roster acquisitions," Toronto GM Brian Colangelo said.

The Celtics went 24-58 in 2006-07, but bad luck in the lottery left them with the No. 5 overall pick in a draft that was said to have just two superstars. So Ainge dealt the pick in a package for Allen, then used the acquisition of that All-Star to persuade Garnett to accept an unprecedented 7-for-1 trade.

With those two and Paul Pierce forming a new Big Three, Boston won 66 games in the regular season to earn home-court advantage throughout the playoffs. They were tied with Cleveland two games apiece entering Wednesday night.

"Our regular season was fantastic," Ainge said before the game. "I never really put goals as to how many wins, but just how the team came together and how they gelled on and off the court."

Ainge credited the owners who gave the green light for the new salaries and said that he was more concerned about the playoff game and the birth of his sixth grandchild an hour earlier.

"Right now there's just a lot of other things going on and I want the attention to stay on the players on the court," he said. "I'm a little uncomfortable with this right now. This is the biggest game of the year for us and for a lot of people. We're still in the middle of trying to become the best team in the NBA and that's really our objective."

Ainge also improved the bench. Even after it was obvious that Boston would coast to one of the NBA's best records, Ainge acquired backup point guard Sam Cassell and backup center P.J. Brown.

"When we made the Kevin trade, I don't know if we had enough players to field a team for a while," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "He not only went out and got players but he got players that fit, and I think that's really important."

But it didn't end with personnel.

"He's been great for me as a coach, and that has nothing to do with his moves," Rivers said. "He's just been great in a lot of ways. I'm really happy when good things happen to good people."

Noah arrested in Gainesville for marijuana possessionby Associated PressUpdated: May 25, 2008, 8:06 PM EST152 comments add this Authorities in Gainesville have charged Chicago Bulls forward and former Florida star Joakim Noah with possession of marijuana and having an open container of alcohol.

Gainesville police spokesman Sgt. Rick Roberts says Noah was arrested around 1:50 a.m. Sunday after an officer spotted him on a sidewalk holding a plastic cup containing an amber drink, a violation of city law. During a search at the station, officers found marijuana in his pocket.

Noah was released after signing a notice to appear before a judge - standard procedure for such offenses. He could face up to 6 months in jail and a $500 fine for the marijuana charge.

Noah led the Gators to consecutive national championships before being selected ninth overall in last June's draft by the Bulls. He averaged 6.6 points and 5.6 rebounds in 74 games as a rookie.

Bulls spokesman Tim Hallam said general manager John Paxson "did express to Joakim his disappointment in his actions this weekend" and added: "Until we gather further information on this situation, we won't be making any further comment."

Saunders won't be back as Pistons coachby Associated PressUpdated: June 3, 2008, 11:32 AM EST172 comments add this Flip Saunders was fired as Detroit Pistons coach Tuesday, four days after his team was eliminated by the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference finals.

President of basketball operations Joe Dumars said it's "time for a new voice to lead our team." Saunders had a year left on a four-year deal he signed in 2005. The decision comes three years after Saunders took over for Larry Brown, who led the Pistons to two straight NBA finals.

"Decisions like this are difficult to make, especially with the success we have had throughout the last three regular seasons," Dumars said in a statement. "However, at this time, I feel it is necessary to make a change."

A message left for Saunders was not immediately returned. Dumars was to speak Tuesday at the team's practice facility.

Assistant coach Michael Curry appears to be the leading candidate to replace Saunders. Other possible candidates include Detroit assistant coach Terry Porter and former Dallas Mavericks coach Avery Johnson.

Would Bulls trade No.1 pick for Wade?Getty Images
Dwyane Wade says he keeps hearing his name mentioned in trade rumors involving the Bulls and Miami Heat. Would the Bulls give up the No. 1 draft position to the Heat in exchange for Wade and the No. 2 overall selection? Or some combination of other players and picks?

"I have heard my name being talked about, and I can't worry about it," Wade said Monday at the Attack Athletics training facility on the West Side. "There is one thing in this league that you have no control over. If another organization wants you, then you should feel good to be wanted."

Wade grew up idolizing Michael Jordan while starring at Richards High School and then Marquette.

"I have a lot of history with the Bulls," Wade said. "And for them to come out with the first pick like that (with a 1.7 percent lottery chance) ... it was fitting that they would do something like that. Nobody thought that would happen. To be in that position and sit back and listen to anything and go back to a team and say: 'How about this? and 'How about that?' ... If [the Bulls] don't make any big moves like that, they're still going to have a great player."

Memphis guard Derrick Rose and Kansas State forward Michael Beasley are expected to go 1-2 in the draft.

:o First time ah hearing dat, dat one hit meh hard boi. Ah really doh know how ah will digest dat one nah. Cuz Wade is not just a great ball player, he is real humble and well mannered person. Fuh de last holiday weekend, ah saw him at one ah de spots wey dem ball men like tuh chill, I said hello, fight ah small talk wid him  ;D, then he went and joined his squad. Well Marcus Banks was dey wid he brothers and crew, boi dem is a complete 360 tuh Wade, dey so damn cocky is ah shame. He not even making half de money Wade making, or have quarter of de talent of Wade, but boi he does go on ah way, I tell you. As much as ah really like dem 2 yutes (Beasley and Rose) ah doh know how ah will sleep if dey trade Wade nah. HIGHLY BLESSED.
