nah the fella went down hurt from the first cross (he rolled over the line, but it was momentum that take him there) and was still on the ground (behind the line) when the ball went in

I was being facetious when I said "not sure that was what happened".... the defender collided with Buffon and stayed down after the collision.  The explanation (just given on the broadcast) is that the player lying out of bounds was considered still a part of the play.  The commentary team disagrees...saying that the defender didn't deliberately step out of bounds on his own (in which case they would have understood), but that his momentum took him out of bounds and he couldn't get back in play even if he wanted to.

...at any rate the Ref is having a horrible day.  Calls are very inconsistent and I personally feel that he's making too much of an attempt to make himself part of the broadcast.  there was a collision in the dutch box and the ball caromed off the Italian player out of bounds for a goal kick.  Inexplicably a corner was awarded instead.  Moments later Van Nistelrooy got raked across the shin just outside the penalty box....no call.

Van Bronckhorst just sealed it... 3-0

MOM w/o a doubt.  Engelaars (playing in only his 7th national appearance) might put up an argument...tremendous midfield presence, but Van Bronckhorst deserves it, no doubt.

wdmc..

i feeling gutted...

italy is a side you don't score more than 1 goal against. full stop.

they go call for donadoni head on a platter.

i eh understand donadoni starting 3 defensive central midfielders with Ambrosini, Gattuso and Pirlo picking up the ball from deep.  The problem was that it had nobody to do what Cassano came on and was doing in that starting lineup; pick up the ball in the midfield in the attacking third and run at the defence to create to make something happen.

in short, he didnt start anyone to replace Totti, yet the system is the same as when Totti was there.

He need to start Cassano or Del Piero in the hole next game.

lawd boy, the last time i remember Italy holding more than 2 in a tournament was against Brazil when they get the 4-1 and I cant even remember that cause ah wasn't even born yet.   :-\

I now watch the game on replay. That goal look suspect as hell but...

Was Van Nistelrooy offside?
Euro 2008
by Phil McNulty - BBC Sport (U1816352) 09 June 2008

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/euro_2008/italy/7371086.stm

Ruud van Nistelrooy's opening goal for the Netherlands against Italy provided the first major talking point of Euro 2008.

Van Nistelrooy looked in an obvious offside position when he steered a close-range finish past Gianluigi Buffon to put the Dutch on the way to a crucial 3-0 win in Berne.

Italy coach Roberto Donadoni was gracious, saying: "I accept it. There's no point crying about it. The referee made a mistake. He's human."

Italy's fans, however, were not as forgiving after watching the incident replayed inside the Wankdorf Stadium in Berne.

But what looked a desperately poor decision was, in fact, a brilliant piece of officiating, according to the chairman of Austria's refereeing commission Gerhard Kapl.

Kapl said Van Nistelrooy was played onside by Italy's Christian Panucci, who had been injured seconds earlier and was lying behind the goal when the Dutch striker scored.

He said the goal was "100% correct, without any doubt", quoting article 11.4.1. of the refereeing code that states "an opposing player cannot be offside when one of the last two defenders has left the field of play" - as in the case of Panucci.

Kapl said the rule was specifically designed to prevent a team causing a deliberate offside - but does that tell the whole story?

Panucci was in no way attempting to gain an advantage or deliberately trying to play the Holland attackers onside.

He had actually been knocked behind the goal by a collision with his own goalkeeper Buffon, so where does the law stand on that?

It appears to be a grey area of the rules. Let us know your thoughts.
Bitter is a supercalifragilistic tic-tac-pro
