Africa rocked by series of shock qualifiers

Updated: June 14, 2008, 3:52 PM ET

JOHANNESBURG, June 14 (Reuters) - Africa's heavyweights suffered surprise defeats in World Cup qualifiers on Saturday with Angola, Egypt, Ghana and Morocco all beaten in their group matches.

Cameroon and the Ivory Coast were also held by supposedly inferior opposition on a day of shock results.

African champions Egypt lost 1-0 in Malawi to a goal three minutes into stoppage time from substitute Chiukepo Msowoya, which set up a three-way tie at the head of the African zone Group 12 standings.

Roguy Mere and Stephane Nguema were the scorers as Gabon won their first points in Group Five with a 2-0 win over Ghana while Uganda romped to a 3-1 win over Angola in Kampala.

Eugene Ssepuya, Andy Mwesigwa and Dan Wagaluka scored for the Ugandans while substitute Mantorras got a late consolation goal for the 2006 World Cup finalists.

Rwanda's 3-1 win over Morocco put them top of Group Eight with a 100 percent record, a feat matched by Burkina Faso whose beat the Seychelles 3-2 away in Victoria.

A hat-trick from Moumouni Dagano ensured a come-from-behind win for the Burkinabe, who now have a comfortable lead in Group Nine.

The Ivorians had to come from a goal down to draw 1-1 away in Botswana, their second successive away draw in a stuttering start to their qualifying campaign.

Cameroon failed to score against Tanzania in a goalless draw in Dar-es-Salaam but remain at the head of the Group One standings.

Sierra Leone won their first points of the campaign as they beat 2010 hosts South Africa 1-0 with a first half penalty from captain Mohamed Kallon. South Africa are participating in the preliminaries because they also serve to determine the finalists for the 2010 African Nations Cup tournament.

A penalty gave Gambia a 1-0 win over Algeria in Banjul, converted in the 18th minute by Mustapha Jarjue.

Why wasn't Grenada granted that penal in minute 34?

Why was that Grenada's player sent off on what was just a simple foul?

Listen carefully to the Costa Rican reporter who's complaining about the bad calls against ... Grenada:

That referee did an injustice to Grenada, particularly on the tarjeta roja he handed out to the defender.

Did you see the game RF ? The Grenadian commentators seemed to accept the expulsion as justified.

Grenada look decent in attack and poor in defense.

Didnt see the game in its entireity....but saw about 10 minutes of highlights. The player did throw an elbow....but I have seen far worse than that go by without even a whistle. Grenada seemed to have created enough chances to win teh game....I think they can score in Costa Rica.

Beside, the first C-R goal was just a gift. It seems like the defenders got confused for a minute. Normally, that match should have ended 3-1 in favor of Grenada.

From the Canadian Voyageurs Support Club

Sunday June 15th: Saint Vincent and The Grenadines host Canada in the 1st leg of CONCACAF Round 2 World Cup Qualifying.  No TV broadcast available but you might be able to tune into Saint V & G's NBC Radio starting at 3 PM EST.  It's all a bit hazy as to whether NBC will broadcast the match itself or just provide updates

NBC Radio, kickoff at 3 PM EST Sunday June 15th

http://www.nbcsvg.com/home/index.php

The return leg is Friday June 20th in Montreal
Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.

Despite my little joke post in the JA V GRN thread I don't know why people go on like Grenada are so crap with lines like ''Grenada Shocker''. I know Grenada got beat 6-2 (1st:3-0 in USA and 2nd: 3-2) but they put on a good performance. People say we only have 2 good players but Modeste, Charles (Yes the one that got sent off) and Bubb are decent players as well. Note these players are all abroad so they don't play in all international games. Bubb's younger brother is good as well, he should be playing pro but I don't know the details of that, maybe he'll play for Grenada soon.
