A jackpot of $120,000 is on offer for the victorious 2008 National Super League team as the season kicks off on Monday.

This year will see the cash prize of the champion team increase by $15,000 while the number of teams will grow from ten to 13. The knockout champs will earn $35,000 while the winners of the Big Four, with insurance company Sagicor as the sponsor, will pocket $15,000.

Caroni FC and House of Dread, who finished in the bottom two spots in last year’s league competition, will not feature in the 2008 season. And the new additions are the Trinidad and Tobago Under-20 team, the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) and three Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (TTFF) zonal winners – St Francois Nationals (North Zone), Economy Strikers (Eastern Counties) and Club Sando (South Zone).

At yesterday’s season-launch at the President’s Box, Queen’s Park Oval, Woodbrook, National Super League chairman Anthony Harford pointed out that the national Under-20 team, under coach Zoran Vranes, have been included since they are preparing for the CONCACAF leg of the FIFA Under-20 World Cup qualification in January.

Reigning champs WASA FC will get the season going on Monday with a meeting against debutants St Francois Nationals, from 6 pm, at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo while, on Wednesday July 2, at venues to be announced, Club Sando will face ALCOA Carenage United, Joe Public will oppose Harlem Strikers, Defence Force will battle Angostura 1976 FC Phoenix, M&M Harvard will clash with Crab Connection and UTT will meet the TT Under-20s.

Harford noted that $300,000 will be the total sum at stake for the league format, with three title sponsors for the respective competitions (league, knockout and Big Four) and 10 additional sponsors, which will be revealed at a later date.

NSL technical director Douglas James urged the clubs to pay greater attention towards the maintenance of their respective venues. “I’m expecting that all the venues are up to standard,” he said. “I am hoping that, as we go along, the venues are up to (mark).
WASA looking for Super League clean sweep.

Defending Super League champions WASA FC are bent on making a clean sweep of the 2008 National Super League.

They will have their chance for a good start for the new season when they meet North Zone champs St Francois Nationals from 6 p.m. at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on Monday.

Nationals earned promotion to the Super League this year after finishing the Champion of Champions playoff unbeaten to claim one of the two spots for promotion up for grabs.

WASA, meanwhile, won the League and knockout winners in the 2007 Super League. However, due to financial constraints, and being a "public utility", according to manager Ralph Haynes, WASA neglected to take up the opportunity for promotion to the T&T Pro League.

But Haynes believes that WASA will prove even more successful this season.

"I feel we will be able to achieve our goals this year," Haynes told the Express on Tuesday, following the launch of the 2008 Super League at the President's Box of the Queen's Park Oval.

He then made clear exactly what those goals were.

"This year, we'd like to make a clean sweep, and make a serious effort to win the Toyota Cup. We got to the semis, we want to go one step further."

Haynes and company are also intent on taking the FA trophy, which they won in 2006, the first Super League team to do so.

In their line up this year is discarded national striker Nigel Pierre, along with former Rangers FC players, defender Jason Eastman, and David Boyd.

The team will be playing for a total of $300,000 in prizes, including $120,000 for winning the league, $35,000 for the knockout, and $15,000 for the Big Four. Sagicor was one of the sponsors for 2008, contributing $45,000.

Super League organisers, All Sport Promotions with 105.1 FM and 91.1 FM are also in talks to have some matches broadcast on radio, while highlights will be shown on TV6 on Sundays.
