Carlos Edwards, fellow midfielder Densill Theobald and striker Cornell Glen, all members of the Trinidad and Tobago football team at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany, will be the special guests at the official opening of the inaugural Goal Points Football League (GPFL).

The event will take place on Sunday from 3 pm, at the St James Infirmary. Ten youngsters will each have the chance to get an autographed poster from Edwards, while football boots worn by Edwards and national star Russell Latapy will be on display during the day. Also at the venue will be giveaways for fans and live DJ entertainment.

And the day’s activities will conclude at 4 pm with the GPFL All Star match, involving players from the 12 participating teams — Avengers, Martin All Stars, Inter Villa, Swans, Bomb Scare, Flippers, Rossland, 501, Midvale FC 08, Petit Valley, Young Gunzs and Clifton Hill. League action will kick off on Tuesday, July 1, while matches will take place on a weekly basis on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays — the weekend encounters will be double-headers.

According to a media release, “The new GPFL is being presented by the St James Football and Youth Development Association (FYDA) and is based on an innovative points system, where teams will be awarded points bonuses for a specific amount of goals scored during the course of a match — win, lose or draw.”

Among the many contributors towards the league are First Citizens, The Caribbean Shop, Benjamin Moore Paints, Bike Inn, Young’s Auto Parts, Trinidad Trophies Limited, The St James Club, Michael Phillips Wet Indies Cycling Store, Reliable Appliances Parts and Services Limited, The Print Shop Limited, Darkroom Designs Limited, Tex Print Limited, Randall’s Pharmacy and the Sports Company of Trinidad and Tobago. For more information on the league, one can call 715-8731.
