T&T to host CONCACAF Women U-17 Finals in July.
By: Shaun Fuentes (TTFF). Trinidad & Tobago will host the 2008 CONCACAF Women’s Under-17 Championship from July 17-26 at Bacolet’s Dwight Yorke Stadium and Marvin Lee Stadium in Macoya.
The inaugural eight-team tournament will have two groups of four during the first round from 17-21 July. The semifinals and finals will take place at the Marvin Lee Stadium on 24 and 26 July, respectively, CONCACAF announced on Wednesday.
Along with the hosts, the CONCACAF Women’s U-17 Championship will have Canada, Mexico and USA from the North Zone; Costa Rica, El Salvador from Central America; Jamaica and Puerto Rico from the Caribbean.
The draw to determine the two first round groups for the 2008 CONCACAF Women’s U-17 Championship will be announced in due course. The CONCACAF Championship will qualify three teams to the inaugural FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup New Zealand 2008.
CONCACAF President Jack Warner commented on T&T as hosts, saying “This is wonderful opportunity for women’s football, particularly at the youth level to gain the much needed exposure in this region, particularly in Trinidad and Tobago. The entire CONCACAF region is making strong attempts to ensure that the women’s game continues to make steady progress and the Under 17 category is important part of the development stage,” Warner said. “I look forward to this tournament with a lot of interest.”
President of the host Federation, Oliver Camps was equally enthused by the decision to stage the tournament in T&T.
“For some time now we have been trying to put the pieces together as it relates to the development of our women’s game and this is an ideal opportunity to showcase women’s football. Our team is a vibrant and promising one and I expect that we will be up for the challenge and definitely pose a threat to the other teams vying for a place in the World Championship,” Camps said.
T&T, under coach Marlon Charles, progressed to the Final round after topping Group B in the preliminaries with convincing victories over Suriname (7-0), St Kitts/Nevis (6-0) and Grenada (4-0) in February. T&T previously hosted the CONCACAF Under 17 Women finals in 2001.
