Under-20s have point to prove.
By: Stephon Nicholas (Newsday).

The Trinidad and Tobago Under-20 football team will be aiming to prove their opening victory in the 2008 BMobile National Super League was no fluke when they face M and M Harvard today at the Marvin Lee Stadium, Macoya at 4 pm.

The Super League newcomers coached by Serbian Zoran Vranes thrashed fellow debutantes UTT 7-0 on Wednesday with Jamal Clarence scoring a double and their Under-17 World Cup defender Akeem Adams marshaling the back-line while also getting among the scorers. M and M Harvard are still searching for their first win of the new season after losing 3-1 on Monday to Crab Connection, league winners in the inaugural year, 2002.

Two-time winners Joe Public will play Crab Connection tomorrow at 4:00 pm at San Juan Secondary Grounds in one of the most exciting matches of match-day two.

The “Eastern Lions” edged Harlem Strikers 3-2 in their opening fixture to kick off their 2008 campaign with a win and will be looking to continue in a similar vein. At Apex Ground, Fyzabad, Club Sando and Defence Force will square off with both teams still searching for their first point of the league after defeats on match-day one. And newcomers Economy Strikers coached by James Mc Clean are at the bottom of the table but will be playing their first game on Sunday against Alcoa Carenage United at their home ground, the Sangre Grande Recreation grounds.

Kick-off time is 3.30 pm. Meanwhile, Harlem Strikers, winners of the knockout competition, will play another newcomer, St Francois Nationals at Frederick Settlement at 4 pm. Reigning champions, WASA FC is on a bye until match day three after winning their opening fixture against St Francois Nationals 3-1 on Monday with goals from Michael Celestine, Wesley Noreiga and Jerome Dickinson. Garvin Gulston scored the lone item for St Francois.

U-20s beat Harvard to top Bmobile Super league standings.
T&T Newsday Reports.

The National Under-20 footballers remain ahead after two matches in the BMobile-sponsored Superleague Football Tournament yesterday when they defeated M and M Harvard 2- 0 at the Marvin Lee Stadium, Macoya.

With the win they maintained their position as front runners on goal difference after firing seven goals past the UTT last week. Alcoa Carenage United also got their second win in as many matches by advantaging Economy Strikers 4-0 at the Sangre Grande Recreation Ground.

Akil Glasgow opened the scoring for the Carenage men in the 14th minute before Kyle Andrews gave them a two-goal cushion in the 29th.

Adrian Marshall extended their advantage before the half-way interval with a 31st minute strike and Keiron Simon sealed the victory with his item in the 75th.

In another game Joe Public Football Club scored twice in the second half to beat Crab Connection FC 2-0.

After a goalles opening 45 minutes “The Eastern Lion’s” as Joe Public are popularly called snatched the lead from Devon King’s 63rd minute goal and Randy Britto added another, one minute from regulation time (89th) for the win.

Like Alcoa Carenage United and the National Under-20 team, the win has been Public’s second and moved them to six points in fourth on goal difference.

Defence Force edged Club Sando 1-0, thanks to an Akiel Pierre 22nd minute goal which assured them their first win of the competition.

Angostura 1976 FC Phoenix clobbered the UTT 3-0 for win number two and Harlem Strikers got a goal apiece from Lorenzo King and Ronald Whisky in shutting out St Francois Nationals 2-0 at Frederick Settlement.

Not sure if having the U20 in the Super League was done last year but this is a great way to keep the team together and play a decent/consistent level of competetive football.

They should be playing some PFL matches also...

Just saw highlights of the Harward game on the news. There was a definate energy in the attack, while the defence looked a little suspect. Good to see that they will be consistently playing together.
Success will never take you by surprise.

Joe Public rally to top spot.
By: Joel Bailry (Newsday).

Joe Public moved to the top spot in the bMobile National Super League with a come-from-behind 4-2 victory over the national Under-20 team in Match Day Three action at the Marvin Lee Stadium, Tunapuna on Wednesday.

Trent Lougheed put the youth team ahead in the 15th minute before Keion Wilson replied for Joe Public on the stroke of half-time, bundling his right-footer from close range, via the post and the body of goalkeeper Jesse Fullerton, after the defence failed to clear a right-sided cross from substitute Randy Britto.

The TT Under-20s regained the lead in the 47th when forward Jamal Clarence collected a ball from midfielder Sean De Silva, held off his marker Brent Edwards and poked the ball beyond the reach of goalie Nicholas Ferguson.

But substitute Christopher Sam turned the table with a pair of goals, from close range – in the 68th he drilled his right-footer home after a run by Britto and, in the 74th, he nudged the ball into the net after Britto’s corner was relayed by both Michael Waldron and Kheon Archie.

And Waldron completed the scoring in the 81st, driving home a 20-metre right-footer beyond the lunging Fullerton.

Angostura 1976 FC Phoenix is now in second position after a 1-1 draw against M and M Harvard at the Hasely Crawford Stadium Training Field, Mucurapo.

Glen Walker put Harvard in front after 20 minutes before veteran forward Dominique Kerr replied in the 37th. Defending champs WASA FC earned their second successive victory with a 3-1 win over Harlem Strikers at the WASA Ground, St Joseph.

Michael Celestine (39th), Mervyn Brooks (90th) and Anthony Thompson (90th) were the goalscorers for WASA while Kelon Williams (90th) replied for Harlem.

Economy Strikers and Club Sando registered their first victories of the season, over Defence Force and the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) respectively. Strikers travelled to the Defence Force headquarters in Chaguaramas and came away with a 2-1 win, courtesy strikes from Kerin Vincent (34th) and Kenwyn Matthew (78th), while Akil Pierre (63th) responded for the hosts.

Club Sando trounced UTT 4-1 at the Apex Ground, Fyzabad, with Andy London (tenth and 11th) and Derron Matthews (35th and 44th) notching two goals apiece, while Yacoob Mustapha (15th) got the lone strike for UTT.

An Crab Connection stumbled to a 2-0 defeat against St Francois Nationals after a goalless first half-time in the second scheduled match at Tunapuna. Nationals got their goals within a ten-minutre period before the end of regulation time through Marlon Bowen (80th) and Garvin Gulston (90th)

Phoenix maul Joe Public, Harvard win first match.
By Joel Bailey (Newsday).

Angostura 1976 FC Phoenix moved to the lead in the 2008 BMobile National Super League season with a 5-2 mauling of Joe Public at Canaan, Bon Accord yesterday, as action took place in Match Day Four. With the result, Phoenix have amassed 10 points from four games, as they ended Joe Public’s 100-percent win-streak.

Randy Britto put Joe Public ahead after 25 minutes before Phoenix responded with goals from Andell Noray netting twice (27th and 37th) and the evergreen Dominique Kerr (45th).

Forward Devon King reduced the deficit to 3-2 in the 46th but Joe Public’s discipline let them down, as they ended the game with nine players, while, in the process, conceding two more goals, from Junior Roberts (79th) and Kevin Stewart (89th).

M&M Harvard earned their first win of the season, spanking Club Sando 3-0 at the Palo Seco Recreation Ground, with a double from Glen Walker (fourth and 12th minutes) and the third from Jabari Samuel (62nd).

The University of Trinidad and Tobago were consigned to their fourth straight loss – by a 3-0 margin to hosts Economy Strikers at the Sangre Grande Recreation Ground, courtesy of a pair by Kerin Vincent (27th and 57th) and one from Kenwin Matthew (64th).

ALCOA Carenage United stayed in fourth place on the 13-team standings after a pulsating 3-3 draw against hosts Defence Force at the Army base in Chaguaramas. Curtis Noel put Carenage ahead in the fourth minute before Defence Force responded with a pair, from Akil Pierre (35th) and Owen Matthews (45th).

Carenage regained their lead with a two-goal burst, from Ricardo Peltier (64th) and Keron Simon (70th), but the game had one piece of drama when Marvin Jones found the back of the net in the 79th to ensure that both teams earned a share of the points. The Trinidad and Tobago Under-20 remained in third spot after they battled to a 1-1 draw against St Francois Nationals at the Marvin Lee Stadium, Tunapuna.

Former national forward Jamal Gay, who returned home from a trial stint in Scandinavia (Finland and Sweden), opened the scoring in the 51st – taking a pass from midfielder Chike Sullivan and shooting his right-footer, via defender Kevon Blackman, past goalkeeper Jason Bowen.

St Francois left it late, until injury time, to earn a share of the points, as Marvin McEachnie got a deep ball, inside the penalty box, and after TT U-20 goalie Jesse Fullerton and Jamil Bailey got in a tangle, McEachnie composed himself and placed his right-footed drive home.

Persistent rainfall and a waterlogged outfield at the San Juan Secondary Comprehensive Ground forced the postponement of the clash between 2007 champs WASA and the struggling Crab Connection. Match Day Five action will be contested on Wednesday.

I know we grooming a national team but as a team in the Superleague...is it fair for the U-20's to just draft in a man on home for holidays? I mean, as a league, don't you have to register a squad of players and it have a deadline for that?

Also, if throughout the course of the season the u-20's coach see men from opposing teams who could make the side, can they then draft them into their squad? I just wondering how it all works...although I applaud the initiative.

On a next note, anybody know who playing for UTT? Is it they sponsor a side or is students and staff or somethign who make a side? If is the latter I might do a partime something to get a sweat...
