Lukaku was never surpluss.  Jose was not going to keep 4 strikers beyond the transfer window.  Arsenal were all set and loan papers were awaiting Jose signature for Ba to be loaned out.  Once Arsenal landed Ozil, Jose changed his mind about loaning them Ba.  Everton wanted Lukaku on loan, not Ba so Lukaku wen, as Jose believes he will manage just fine with Etoo, Torres and Ba and Lukaku will get constant first team action as opposed to inconsistently had he stayed.  there is a method to the madness.  As fans many may not agree with it but it is the reason nontheless.  getting regular 1st XI action is the same reason why Moses is with Liverpool now on loan.

Nah dred, if he wasn't surplus to requirements he'd be kicking ball fuh Chelsea right now, end ah story.  He brought Eto'o on near the close of the window in part because he didn't have confidence in Lukaku... who he sent to Everton the very next day. So he preferred Eto'o to Lukaku.  How is that NOT him being surplus to requirements?

He wanted Rooney.  That didn't work out so he bought Eto'o.  Eto'o gives him a proven striker that he worked with before and knows can execute whatever directive is laid out for him.  Therefore he is automatically #1.  Lukaku going to Everton only evolved because of the Ba situation changing at the last minute.  If anyone else wanted Ba he would have been the one to go and Lukaku would still be in Chelsea blue.  So it was a matter of circumstance more tan anything else.  You making it out as if Lukaku was always going which is not the case at all.  In fact Lukaku was among the last tranfers anounced so , if it was about a lack of confidence then WBA who wanted him for a second term would have gotten him before Everton had any chance to come in offering a higher fee.  Moses was surplus.  Look at how early on that was announced and arranged.

Nah I not even looking into all ah dat... I more concerned with the bottom line.  Jose brought in Eto'o because in your words "Eto'o gives him a proven striker that he worked with before and knows can execute whatever directive is laid out for him."  Not sure how that is any from me saying that Mourinho didn't have confidence in Lukaku being able to give him what he wanted in those areas.  Why didn't he keep Lukaku on transfer day? That is what it boils down to.  He thought he had enough in Ba, Eto'o and Torres... Lukaku wasn't going to get any run... he was surplus.  So rather than sell him, he was sent back out on loan.  But bottom line is they had too many strikers at that point and Lukaku was odd man out, no matter how you spin it.  Doesn't matter if Mourinho arrived at that decision earlier on in the process (as he apparently did with Moses) or if he only make up he mind last minute.

Hoss at the end of the day Lukaku's move was a matter of circumstance as Mou was never going to keep 4 strikers.  If Wenger din play fass an sign Ozil den dis wouldn be no discussion.  Had anyone else wanted Ba then he was gone and not Lukaku.  If yuh argument is about whether Lukaku would have been first choice then it's obvious he wasn't going to be that this early in the season.  In the end is better for him that he at Everton right now because if Ba went to Arsenal Lukaku minutes would still have been limited.

Lukaku loan is Everton's gain
by John Brewin (ESPN FC)

Bucharest, Monday evening, and Jose Mourinho abruptly takes his leave of a news conference.

"You have spoken about [Juan] Mata for three weeks," he says. "Now you're asking about Kevin [De Bruyne]. You are impressed with the players who are not playing."

A couple of hours later at Goodison Park and Romelu Lukaku has destroyed Newcastle United by half-time. Mourinho could rather do with such a striker, but here is another question to be asked at peril: Why is Lukaku with Everton and not Chelsea?

Indeed, chief among the reasons for Mourinho's flounce was his concern that Fernando Torres was facing a lengthy ban for his unsportsmanlike pawing of Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen's face, a fear later proved unfounded by the vagaries of the Football Association's flaccid "retrospective punishment" policy.

With Samuel Eto'o yet to work off the possibly terminal torpor of two years at Anzhi Makhachkala, and Demba Ba becoming Stamford Bridge's invisible man, Torres' recent return to form is timely. The knee injury sustained on Tuesday is not as serious as first thought; the Spaniard will most probably be back after the international break. Still, he could do with a bit of support.

Meanwhile, Chelsea's loan is Everton's gain. Lukaku's Newcastle brace followed a match-winning header at West Ham. Goodison has a new hero; Roberto Martinez has pulled off a masterstroke.

But why would Mourinho let Lukaku go? The accepted truth among insiders is simplicity itself: Mourinho does not share others' high admiration for the player. The Belgian's preseason performances were not to the manager's approval, despite a winning goal against Roma in Washington DC in the final match of the US tour.

As Mata has discovered, tracking back and working hard in defence are a minimum Mourinho requirement. Lukaku's last kick as a Chelsea player came in missing the penalty in Prague that cost his club the Super Cup, but the Blues boss is believed to have been far more annoyed by the Belgian's defensive laxity as Bayern Munich swarmed over the dying embers of extra time.

Mourinho made it a personal mission to land Wayne Rooney, and the subsequent failure turned him further against his strikers. Torres is barely shiftable given his vast wages and the embarrassment a low-value sale would cause to Roman Abramovich; Ba is viewed, fatally, as a Rafa Benitez signing, and not of sufficient quality; Eto'o arrived as an afterthought when it was clear Rooney would not be coming.

Indeed, Ba would likely have been plying his trade on loan at Arsenal had the Gunners met Chelsea's £3 million loan fee. Mourinho later claimed Arsenal's landmark signing of Mesut Ozil led him to block the loan at the last minute, but Lukaku would have been retained had the Ba move been completed. Instead, Lukaku was allowed to move to Merseyside.

When the news came that Mourinho was prepared to let him go, a disappointed Lukaku was on Belgium duty, and Kevin Mirallas is said to have been key in persuading him to join Everton. The winger sat with Lukaku in his hotel room before the deal was completed in the final hour of the transfer window. At Upton Park, it was Mirallas who supplied the cross for Lukaku's winner. Without first-team football, a place in Belgium's first World Cup finals since 2002 could not be guaranteed; Christian Benteke is coach Marc Wilmots' first choice as lone striker.

Lukaku is now at a club where his talents are appreciated and a necessity; Everton desperately required someone to supplant the ailing Nikica Jelavic, and Martinez is more likely to indulge his rawness. Last season's loan at West Brom was considered successful, with 17 goals scored, yet Steve Clarke, Mourinho's former assistant, only started him in 20 Premier League games. Pragmatist Clarke usually preferred the discipline of Shane Long to start, before Lukaku was launched as an impact sub. A fruitful policy, but suggestive that a starting place at Chelsea could hardly be expected.

In Belgium, the concern is rather more for De Bruyne, criticised publicly by Mourinho in Bucharest before that sharp exit. A Facebook page that translates as "Jose, what is your problem with Kevin De Bruyne?" has over 30,000 likes. Lukaku's treatment has been pinpointed by a wider suspicion of the Chelsea manager, who also has Eden Hazard under his charge. Hazard, whose dedication to defence has hardly ever been fanatical, may yet be the next in the Fastidious One's sights.

Lukaku has a reputation as Didier Drogba minor, helped in no small part by the elder man taking him under his wing during the 2011-12 season they spent together at Stamford Bridge. Lukaku made just one Premier League start, scoring no goals in Drogba's swan song, but the pair bonded. "Only those who don't take a penalty never miss and you were strong enough to do it," Drogba's Instagram page sympathised when his 20-year-old protege missed in Prague.

Yet there are distinct differences. When Drogba joined Chelsea at 26 in 2004, he was approaching the finished article -- his goals had helped Marseille to reach the UEFA Cup final the previous season. Even then, he had to follow the Mourinho doctrine, defend from the front, hold shape. Drogba played with the knowing hunger of a late developer, having not signed a professional contract until he was 21.

Lukaku has been a pro from the age of 16. Since making his debut for Anderlecht in 2009, he has been regarded as a player most likely to. Mourinho is not a coach to pander to those who exhibit an air of entitlement; star quality is little use without industry. The likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Eto'o were made to toil and sacrifice themselves at Inter. Lukaku can only become a Mourinho player if he shows similar dedication, though, this being Chelsea, by the time his loan ends and he returns, there is always the possibility that he might be working under a different coach entirely.

Until then, he is an Everton player, an arrangement that suits both club and player. Just beware of asking Mourinho about it.

...and weird how all of it repeats everything I've been saying all along (and what is plainly obvious), Mourinho, whatever his motivation, considered him surplus to requirements.  This wasn't simply a case of "oh shit, we have too much strikers... leh we loan somebody."  Mourinho had little faith in Lukaku ("He brought Eto'o on near the close of the window in part because he didn't have confidence in Lukaku... "), the article (if it is to be believed) bears that out... JM didn't think he was productive enough, and wasn't enamored of his defensive effort.

Quality wins out.
Norwich went from looking more likely to score, to losing convincingly in the space of 5 minutes.

I'm not a big fan of Mourinho, and I wouldn't say that the change of system made the goals. But at least it was a positive adjustment.

"), the article (if it is to be believed) bears that out... JM didn't think he was productive enough, and wasn't enamored of his defensive effort.

"Romelu Lukaku has claimed it was his wish to leave Chelsea on loan and insisted Jose Mourinho should not be criticised for sanctioning the move to Everton.  Towards the end of the summer transfer window Chelsea scoured the market for a new striker, eventually settling on Samuel Eto’o.  Despite Eto’o’s arrival Chelsea remained light in the attacking department, so it came as a surprise when the Blues sent Lukaku on loan to Everton.  Lukaku has made a blistering start to life at Everton. He bagged two goals in the win over Newcastle on Monday.  His form for the Toffees has led to questions about why Mourinho let the Belgium international leave on a season-long loan.  During his press conference on Friday, Mourinho said he had no regrets about the decision to allow Lukaku to leave.

And now the forward has waded in, saying it was his wish to move, per Chris Bascombe of the Daily Telegraph.  "I did not know if I would be playing for Chelsea so I asked the manager to let me leave," Bascombe quoted Lukaku as saying. "We spoke and I told him."  It appears Lukaku’s move was fuelled by his desire to nail down a spot in the Belgium national side ahead of next summer’s World Cup in Brazil.

Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, Lukaku said:

"I could have stayed and fought, but it was not about the competition. When you are a 20-year-old you need minutes. I lost my place in the national team because I did not play for a year with Chelsea.  I want that position back. I want to be in a top team and play. You only get better if you play so the best thing was to leave."

Surpluss my ass, the man requested his move.  If Ba had gone to Arsenal that move was likely to be denied.  It have nothing to do with faith in or lack thereof.  But I'm sure yuh go rinse and repeat yuh argument even though it not founded in reality lol

You fall on yuh blasted head or what?  The man state clearly he did not know if he would be playing, Suarez requested a move away from Liverpool and how that turn out?  Modric did the same at Spurs and Rooney at United.  What de ass yuh really talking about he requested move?  He didn't ask for a transfer, he asked to be loaned out so he could get more run and have a chance to play international ball.  If Mourinho didn't want to send him on loan he would NOT have sent him on loan.  Period.  The fact that he did means that he thought the players he was retaining were better or enough, individually or in aggregate to compensate for whatever Lukaku had to offer.  In other words, he did not need Lukaku.  However yuh try to spin it to try and be right... if he did not NEED the player, then clearly he was "surpluss" to Mourinho's needs.

Not related, they asked to be sold and to be sold to direct rivals for CL spots.  Not the same by any stretch.  Suarez was never worried about his position in the starting XI.  Levy has always been an asshole so anything to do with Spurs and transfer need an asterix next to it.  As I see it the man ST position for Chelsea was up for grabs.  Despite knowing and trusting Eto'o he hasn't been playing in the same calibre of league so time to settle would be needed, Torres has ben good in Europe and poor in the EPL, Lukaku was good at WB last season and yet they are no where near the same type of outfit with the same aspirations.  Therefore in order to be a first pick it would have had to be earned.  The man make the smart move and ask to get loaned out and end up on a team where he is first choice.  You keep harping on whether Jose rated him or not, but rating him and having complete confidence in him is 2 different things.  You feel he doh rate Mata, Luiz, DeBruyne, etc, too?  Come on fella yuh arguing nonsense.  Yuh argument about surpluss is crap.  If Lukaku took the same tact as Ba he would have his opportunities to earn his spot.  He chose another route and Jose grant him his request because as manager he know he can make it work.  If Torres had asked to go instead of Lukaku yuh think Torres wouldn't be gone now?  Instead he said from day 1 I will fight for my place "I am a Chelsea player."  Is all about choices and Jose don't like malcontents.  Why would he have kept him?

I convince you smoking yes... after this I done.  LFC (John Henry in particular) make it clear that Suarez wasn't going nowhere.  Of course if Madrid came in with 50 mil they would have sold him.  Finances and not the player was going to dictate the move.  This is where the analogy gets lost on you.  You saying/implying that Lukaku asked to be loaned out so Mourinho had no choice but to grant the request because he didn't want to keep a malcontent.  I show you clear examples of where being a malcontent don't mean a team has to give in to a player's wishes.  Instead of seeing the forest in the analogy, you eh even seeing de trees... your head down in de weeds talking about direct CL rival and what not.  None of that matters for purposes of the analogy.  Malcontents... demand transfers... teams didn't budge... end of.

Next you talking about me "harping on whether Jose rated" Lukaku or not.  I dunno, this is about the tenth time ah posting basically de same argument so possibly I talk about Jose rating him, but ah doubt it... and too lazy to go check.  Me eh say nutten about Jose rating him.  Ah say whatever he was offering, Jose thought he had the same if not better in Ba/Eto'o/Torres.

Ah say whatever he was offering, Jose thought he had the same if not better in Ba/Eto'o/Torres.

...yuh hitting Miami or what?

No choice?!  You have a comprehension problem?  He asked and Mo granted his request based on: 1. the fact that he never wanted to keep 4 strikers to start with, 2. he doesn't like to keep players who don't want to work for their position, 3. Lukaku hasn't had the burden of attempting to lead a team as big as Chelsea from the front.  Therefore he would have to put his head down and really work to impress the boss to get that spot and since he didn't want to take that route Jose CHOSE to grant his request.  It is not exactly the same as handing in a transfer request and publicly saying I want to go so not sure why you feel that fits when it is off.  If none of that (being sold to CL and domestic league rivasl mattered) the Ba would have been wearing Arsenal colors.  So think again because it does matter.  Your analogy also fails because Saurez going into the season was still your most prolific and best all around scoring option.  Therefore it would have been foolish to sell him without a clear replacement lined up.  So malcontent or not Rogers did the wise thing to keep him where he was and not bow to Suarez.  Quite different with Lukaku.  He has the tools and physique to be even better than Drogba was for us but he isn't there yet.  Last season he was a sub at West Brom that played great but Shane Long was still in front.  Lukaku would come on with fresh legs and destroy the opposition with his skill, strength and pace.  He whether rated or not (on paper) was not our strongest scoring option.  If you sick in yuh head and think he is a better class of Striker than either Eto'o or Torres then you must be on one.  As for your last point about rating and confidence Lukaku isn't proven in an outfit with such high aspiarations as a team like Chelsea.  Despite the thin numbers Torres is great in Europe and plays very well even when he doesn't score.  Eto'o is also a proven big time striker even better than Torres.  Ba is really the odd man out but Lukaku want to be in he WC starting XI so he needed guaranteed first team work and getting it.  Now he has a true chance to pressure the coach into whether he worth it ahead of Benteke.

Doh worry Chelsea will come out of this shining and prove that loaning him out was to both our benefit when next season rolls around.

Agreed.  I think Jose is working on improving that though.  He wants (probably Roman's orders) a complete team that great in all areas.  That is why he challenged Mata to do more.  It ha no question Mata great up in attack but Jose also want team defense.  I think as the season progresses (and at least one of our strikers get the scoring itch) it will start to bear fruit.
