Interesting article from Paul Parker written on June 9th 2009

Who is Paul Parker?
Quote
Paul Parker enjoyed a distinguished career for club and country. The versatile defender won 19 England caps and played the 1990 World Cup semi-final against West Germany. After spells at Fulham and QPR, Paul joined Manchester United in 1991, where he helped the club claim their first league title for 26 years, and won the Double twice. During six seasons at Old Trafford, he played with legends such as Eric Cantona, Roy Keane and David Beckham.

Kaka deal shows up Chelsea
Tue Jun 09 12:03PM

The £58 million Real Madrid paid for Kaka is a lot of money, but there can be no doubt he is a supreme talent and Real know what they are getting.

It is a massive sum, but not all that surprising in today's world. Milan were simply not in a position to turn that sort of money down.

Although Manchester City fans will say the fee could have been £40m more if Kaka had signed for them, I don't think that was ever going to happen. City were not the right club for him.

You also have to say the deal represents another failure in the transfer market for Chelsea, who have really struggled to make the 'fantasy' signings Roman Abramovich wanted when he bought the club.

While they denied making a formal bid for Kaka, they were certainly interested and it would be naive to think they were not involved in negotiations on some level.

It is hard for them because they just do not have a prestigious enough name to sign the very top players.

They have had five years of success, but that is not enough to build the kind of reputation that Real enjoy, with their countless domestic titles and nine European Cups. A few barren years do not affect them as much because of their glittering history.

I think most players would rather sign for Liverpool than Chelsea, even though they have not won the league for 19 years.

When I signed for Manchester United they had gone 25 years without winning the league but that certainly did not put me off. If anything, it was an incentive.

If a club has a dry spell, the rewards and accolades will be all the greater if you can help them end the drought. Imagine the glory and adulation for the Liverpool squad that finally wins the Premier League.

Kaka can expect something similar if he helps Real return to the top of the pile in Spain.
Many people who saw Real's defending last season might say they should concentrate on strengthening at the back, but what they need more than any individual player is the team spirit and unity that Barcelona have.

It obviously helps to have a midfielder who can rival Xavi and Andres Iniesta for technical ability, but it will count for nothing unless Real find some cohesion, which was sadly lacking last season.

One thing you can say about Kaka is that he is not a prima donna, and seems fairly humble. He will work hard for the team and keep his nose clean. Any club in the world would love to have him.

We all know about Real president Florentino Perez's formula for buying success through 'Galacticos', and he has shown that it can work.

It will certainly add interest to the Spanish league. At the moment, people really want to watch Barcelona, but Kaka's arrival at their big rivals will immediately make Real more attractive and interesting to neutrals, and hopefully it will spice up the Liga title race.

Parker tries to argue that Chelsea's inability to sign Kaka shows them up. If there is any truth to the allegations that Chelsea pursued Kaka, then Chelsea was shown up by a bigger team - Real, and there is no shame in that.

However, things have changed alot since June 9th 2009 and Manchester United have been shown up by Real Madrid in taking away their star player: Cristiano Ronaldo. Manchester City have shown them up by taking away one of their longest running targets - Roque Santa Cruz. Carlos Tevez walked out on them. Franck Ribery has ignored everything they have said to him thus far. Just today alone, another one of their targets, Karim Benzema was snuffed out from under them by Real Madrid.

Here's how Barcelona showed up a Manchester United squad featuring Paul Parker in 94 who admitted that Hristo Stoichkov was cheeky and Romario was arrogant but fast

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/2A4OcyS2KPM" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/2A4OcyS2KPM</a>

... and as for all the players would rather sign for Liverpool than Chelsea, even though they have not won the league for 19 years ... the only one on that list is Glenn Johnson (who was ushered out of Chelsea some years ago - and who is grossly overpriced - RE: Robbie Keane saga last year). So far this transfer season, all the players would rather sign for any team BUT Manchester United.

Glory Glory

....and Glenn Johnson, while having some potential, at the time was too much of a liability with all the brainless errors he was making in that back line, so if he feel that by signing for liverfool he was getting back at Chelsea for them having "ushered him out" he need to understand that he was "ushered out" for very good reason.   I like this post, acb.   MUHAHA FOREVER!!!

Chelsea agree Zhirkov deal

Chelsea have signed Russian international Yuri Zhirkov from CSKA Moscow for a reported £18m fee.

The 25-year-old left-back, who has played 28 times for Russia, came to prominence during Euro 2008 when the national side reached the semi-finals.

Zhirkov, who can also play in midfield, has joined on a four-year deal.

New Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti confirmed the signing at first official news conference saying: "Zhirkov is naturally on the left."

He added: "I think he can do all the work and can play in defence and in between."

The Russian utility player is Chelsea's third signing of the summer, following the arrivals of goalkeeper Ross Turnbull and striker Daniel Sturridge.

During his time with CSKA Moscow, Zhirkov helped the Russian club win the Uefa Cup, scoring the second goal in the 3-1 win over Sporting Lisbon.

Zhirkov flew to London onday and underwent a medical before completing his transfer.

Carlo want to try a new diamond formation up front. He try a thing with one striker and it work - then he try a thing with two strikers and it work.

Mutu loses appeal over huge fine

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/c/chelsea/8178248.stm

Mutu rebuilt his career in Italy after being sacked by Chelsea

Adrian Mutu must pay Chelsea £14.65m after losing his appeal against a Fifa ruling for a breach of contract.

The striker, who cost the Blues £15m in 2003, was sacked a year later after he tested positive for cocaine and given a seven-month worldwide football ban.

Fifa issued the fine last year but Mutu described it as "inhumane and unjust" and outlined his intention to appeal.

However, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) has ruled against the 30-year-old, who now plays for Fiorentina.

"The Cas panel concluded that the appeal brought by the player was to be dismissed and the measure of damages, as awarded by Fifa's Dispute Resolution Chamber (DRC), was to be confirmed," said a Cas statement.

"Adrian Mutu must therefore pay 17,173,990 euros to Chelsea FC."

The fine, based on lost earnings, was calculated on the length of time Mutu's contract had left to run, and was the highest ever handed down by Fifa.

After being sacked by Chelsea and serving his ban, the Romanian joined Juventus in January 2005, and at the end of the following season he moved to his current side, Fiorentina.

When Fifa announced its verdict, Chelsea welcomed it, calling it "a very significant decision for football".

The Chelsea statement continued: "Not only did the Dispute Resolution Chamber make us a very significant monetary award, it also recognised the damaging effect incidents involving drugs have on football and the responsibility we all have in this area."

The latest ruling is third time that Cas has been involved in the case.

"In 2005, Cas confirmed the decision of the Football Association Premier League Appeals Committee finding that, because of a positive doping test, Mutu had committed a breach of the employment contract without just cause," added the Cas statement.

"In 2007, Cas set aside a first decision by the DRC denying jurisdiction and referred the matter back to Fifa to determine and impose the appropriate sporting sanction and/or order for compensation arising out of the dispute."

Carlo is a boss coach and will allow players to play their natural game. Chelsea fly out the blocks in preseason, but the race is not for the swiftest so careful. I must admit this is one team with lots of depth, could be hard to manage.
