Jones to Stoke?!!
« on: August 24, 2009, 11:20:44 AM »
STOKE TARGET JONES
Steve Bates; Alan Nixon

Stoke City boss Tony Pulis is ready to shatter their transfer record with a £12million bid for Sunderland striker Kenwyne Jones.

Hotline understands Pulis is planning an audacious bid to tempt Sunderland boss Steve Bruce into parting with the powerful 24-year-old Trinidad & Tobago international.

Pulis was prepared to pay £15m for Tottenham's Darren Bent before he signed for Bruce at the Stadium of Light - and now he's prepared to spend big to land Jones - who scored two against Blackburn yesterday.

A £12m Wearside raid would comfortably eclipse the £5.5m Stoke paid Reading for Dave Kitson a year ago.

Although Bruce was singing Jones' praises recently, it is understood he would be prepared to let the former Southampton hitman go - at the right price.

Pulis already has a clutch of former Sunderland stars at the Britannia Stadium, recently adding Dean Whitehead to a list which includes Rory Delap, Danny Higginbotham, Liam Lawrence and Thomas Sorensen.

The Potters boss reckons he needs more firepower for this season to take the load off James Beattie, Richard Cresswell and Kitson - giving Stoke a better chance of repeating last season's succesful return to the Premier League.

Jones scored vital goals last season to help struggling Sunderland stay in the top-flight and Pulis believes he can do the same for Stoke.

We go see how much Bruce value him soon enough.  I suspect this is just rumor, but remember Stoke finished comfortably excluded from any relagation worries.  So if this turn out to be real it may not be all that bad.  Then again though, he might ha to deal with the some "hoof it" football where they just play long balls in his general direction like TnT National Side

I think it's a rumour, the papers are going crazy as transfer market is almost over, Chelsea is reported to have gotton Aguerro for 42 mil, if this is true, then I'll be mad,I would have love to see him at united. There is also one going around that Keane will be back for Edwards in January

I understand that KJ is still loved at Stoke for scoring some crucial goals while on a short loan spell there (I remember he didn't celebrate after he scored against them last season)

...would be somewhat of a homecoming for him if this actually happened..

I think all this is just hype trying to throw Jones off, before they play Stoke over the weekend!

Bruce turns deaf ear to £12m Jones bid

Bruce turns deaf ear to £12m Jones bid
By Andy Richardson (The Northern Echo)

STEVE BRUCE is refusing to break up the Premier League’s leading strike partnership, despite today’s opponents Stoke City being linked with a £12m bid for Kenwyne Jones.

Stoke already have five former Black Cats in their ranks and their attempts to sign Jones were followed by a £2m bid for Sunderland supporters’ player of the year Danny Collins.

Bruce labelled reports of Stoke’s interest in Jones, Sunderland’s top scorer last season, as “bizarre” but Potters’ boss Tony Pulis is known to retain strong interest in the Trinidad and Tobago international and is also keen to land Collins.

While the Sunderland manager confirmed that he’s accepted bids from Ipswich Town for Grant Leadbitter and Carlos Edwards, his response to enquiries from rival clubs for other members of his squad have been met with a firm rejection.

Bruce confirmed he is in no mood to end Jones’ partnership with Darren Bent, which is currently the most productive in the top flight with both strikers netting two goals apiece.

Asked about Pulis’ pursuit of Jones, he replied: “It seemed bizarre to me. I have worked so hard to get Bent in and (Frazier) Campbell and Kieron Richardson playing off the front.

“The last thing I will do is disrupt that. We have to evaluate who we let out and how many. The only bid we have is from Ipswich. There have been several enquiries and we have said ‘no chance’.”

Edwards and Leadbitter have been given permission to discuss personal terms with Roy Keane after the Ipswich manager had a bid accepted for the pair, who have been deemed surplus to requirements following Bruce’s overhaul of the squad.

But the manager confirmed there has been no recent interest from any club in signing Nyron Nosworthy or Daryl Murphy.

Edwards has struggled to adapt to the Premier League after being a key figure in the club’s promotion campaign under Keane three years ago and his departure would come as no surprise. The club’s willingness to release Leadbitter, the biggest success story of Sunderland’s Academy, would be a more controversial move.

The midfielder has made over 100 first team appearances for the team he’s supported since he was first taken to Roker Park as a toddler and Bruce recently declared his intention to keep the Chesterle- Street-born player.

But Leadbitter is known to be keen to make a fresh start away from Wearside after suffering the bereavement of his father last year.

“I really like Grant Leadbitter,”

revealed Bruce. “There comes a time when he wants to play and be number one on the team sheet. I understand where he is coming from. I have given him the chance to go and play.

“If it doesn’t happen at Ipswich I would be delighted to have him back. I couldn’t offer him what he needed and he was disappointed I brought in Cattermole and Cana. He is Sunderland through and through.

“He beats himself up so badly when he doesn’t play. I have told him it is his call.”

Bruce expects to bring in two more players, one of which is Ghana centre-half John Mensah, who is awaiting visa clearance, before the transfer window closes.

That figure could rise if, as expected, more players leave the club before Tuesday’s deadline.

After ending his interest in defenders Sylvain Distin and Richard Dunne and striker Maroune Chamakah, Bruce admitted to making an enquiry for £6m-rated Michael Turner of Hull City.

“We have registered an interest in the boy, but that’s as far as it’s gone as far as I am aware at the moment. We have a few on the go. John Mensah and a couple of irons in the fire. I am reluctant to talk about individuals as it is disrespectful,” noted Bruce, who believed that Distin’s £6.5m price tag represented poor value for a 31-year-old.

Paul McShane is close to agreeing personal terms on a £1.5m move to Hull, while Roy O’Donovan is also expected to exit.

Stoke eye Jones move

Stoke eye Jones move.
Skysports.com.

Pulis keen on Black Cats ace.

Skysports.com understands Stoke are lining up a move for Sunderland striker Kenwyne Jones.

Jones' future at Sunderland has been the subject of speculation for some time after he was linked with a move to Liverpool during the January transfer window.

Stoke are in the market for a new striker with doubts surrounding the long-term futures of James Beattie and Dave Kitson.

West Ham ace Carlton Cole has been linked with a move to the Britannia Stadium, but Potters boss Tony Pulis has denied any interest in the England international.

Pulis has money to spend this summer and a new target man is believed to be his top priority with Jones believed to be at the top of his wanted list.

Pulis is a big admirer of Jones having worked with him during the striker's loan spell at the club in 2005 following his loan switch from Southampton.

Jones impressed during his spell at Stoke scoring three goals in 13 appearances and Pulis believes the Trinidad and Tobago international would be the perfect fit for his Potters side.

Sunderland would be reluctant to lose Jones, but if they are successful in landing Danny Welbeck from Manchester United they could be tempted to cash-in.

He have competition this season. Make or break 4 him, will definitely start the first 4-5 games but if he's not in good form then fraizer campbell is gna take his place. Its best for him to stay at sunderland. Even though Stoke is more his style, i think Sunderland are on the up
