Don Quarrie held both records simultaneously???
« on: August 20, 2008, 02:27:23 PM »
I've seen the following quote in a couple of places. Most recently on the BBC website: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/olympics/athletics/7572131.stm

Quote
...
Bolt seized both with ease, becoming the first man to secure the prestigious Olympic sprint double since Carl Lewis in 1984.
The 6ft 5in sprinter is also the first since compatriot Don Quarrie in 1976 to hold both sprint world records at the same time.
...

Now, as far as I know that wasn't the case but I figured I'd check to see if I remember things wrong. As far as I remember, in 1976 the 100m record was the 9.95 set by Jim Hines at Mexico in the 1968 Olympics. And that record stood until it was broken by Calvin Smith in the 80s. Does anybody remember something different?? Did they get the dates wrong perhaps??
