Platini, Winnie Mandela for TTFF celebration.
By: Ian Prescott (Express).

Former national footballers Carlton "The General" Franco, David Nakhid, Dwight Yorke and Everald "Gally" Cummings are among 200 people being honoured by the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (T&TFF).

These people will be honoured at a special dinner and awards function which will take place from 7.30 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Port of Spain. The event comes as the T&TFF continues to celebrate its 100-year anniversary.

The awards function will cater to approximately 1,200 persons and will be attended by 11 Members of Parliament and several foreign dignitaries. Several of the world's top football officials will be present, including FIFA president Joseph Sepp Blatter, UEFA president Michel Platini, Brazilian Federation president Ricardo Texiera and former FIFA president Dr. Joao Havelange.

Winnie Mandela, former wife of ex-South African president Nelson Mandela and a representative of the local organising committee for the South Africa 2010 World Cup, will also be here. Also scheduled to attend are the ambassadors of the United States, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico and Britain.

T&T sporting greats Brian Lara and Hasely Crawford and Father Clyde Harvey are also on the guest list.

"Several plane loads will be arriving from all over the world bringing guests to our centennial dinner on Friday evening from seven p.m.," said Jack Warner, the T&TFF special adviser. "They will be here because they all realise that one hundred years is a landmark in any institution."

Yesterday, Warner launched the T&TFF's week of football which will feature the senior national team of T&T meeting Guatemala in a World Cup qualifier on Saturday. During the week, youth national teams of Brazil and El Salvador will also be here to test their T&T counterparts.

"If ever there was a football week in this country, I want to say this is it," Warner declared.

The FIFA vice president added that persons honoured will be given the dignity they deserve because of their contribution to football.

"We have 100 living honorees...several of whom I am seeing here today, and 100 posthumous honorees, all of whom will be given awards. It will be a blaze of glory, and believe you me, if you miss it will take you another 100 years to enjoy it."

how come Arthur Wilkinson, one of the most popular captains of the T&T team (30's) not on the list.

"For some years now, I have had the pleasure and privilege of captaining Trinidad at home and abroad, and of meeting other Intercolonial teams and I have no hesitation in saying that no captain even had a happier team under him. The spirit of willingness, and co-operation and self-sacrifice in the interests of the team has been such that my own task has been a comparatively simple one,"

"The benefit derived from a game is not to be measured in figures, whether they represent goals or gate receipts; it is the spirit of the game, sportsmanship and team spirit which count most of all and these factors, ..., I think, still live when the goals and gate receipts have become mere statistics."

I know Jack and TTFF have been reading the comments on this web site. We complained that they should be honouring all the living past players. We also said that there should be a religious service for all the deceased players. They kinda went in that direction.
